Undergraduate
Step 1: Apply for Admission to UNCG
Full admission to the School of Theatre is a two-step process involving a successful application and/or a successful live audition, as well as acceptance into the University by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Acceptance to the University prior to submission of your Theatre application or audition is not a requirement, though you are strongly encouraged to submit an application to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions prior to your audition. Step 2: Apply for Admission to the School of Theatre
Please choose the area of study in which you are interested:
Bachelor of Arts in Drama
Students academically admitted into the BA in Drama by the UNCG Undergraduate Admission Office are automatically admitted into the BA in Drama by the School of Theatre. No additional secondary admission requirements must be met at this time for this program.
Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting or Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre
In addition to admission to UNCG, students applying to the BFA Performance Programs must complete an application and video prescreen via Acceptd. Prescreen submissions open on August 1, 2023 and will close on January 15, 2024.
Prescreens are reviewed on a rolling basis beginning on September 1st, 2022. If your pre-screen is successful, you will be invited to a Final Audition. These Final Auditions are offered in both In-Person and Virtual formats. You will be given the opportunity to choose your day and audition format after your prescreen. Final Audition days are:
- Friday November 10th, 2023 – On Campus
- Friday January 19th, 2024 – Virtual
- Friday February 16th, 2024 – On Campus
- Friday February 23rd, 2024 – On Campus
- Saturday February 24th, 2024 – On Campus
Students audition for the BFA in Acting and BFA in Musical Theatre for Fall entry into the program; mid-year entry during Spring term is not available. To keep class size small and allow for individual attention, these programs are highly selective.

Bachelor of Fine Arts in Design and Theatre Technology, Bachelor of Fine Arts in Technical Production
Provisional admission is granted to the BFA in Design/Technology and the BFA in Technical Production during the first two semesters. At the end of Fall semester, students meet the faculty to discuss their goals. At the end of the second semester, following the completion of a production assignment, students interview for admission to the program. Students should consult their faculty advisors for detailed interview requirements. Admission to these programs is very competitive.
Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre Education
To be accepted into the BFA Theatre Education program, you must first be admitted to the University.
After earning three full semesters at UNCG as a provisional Theatre Education candidate, you must then apply for secondary admission to the School of Education before you are officially categorized as a BFA in Theatre Education major and qualify for THR 482 Teaching Methods in Theatre Arts on the way to student teaching during your final spring semester. Application to the School of Education includes a minimum 3.0 GPA at UNCG, passing scores on the Praxis® Core Academic Skills for Educators test (or exemption), 35 approved hours of field experience, and endorsement from the Director of Theatre Education. Consult the Theatre Education Handbook for more details that outline process timeline.
Application for secondary admittance into the School of Education must be made at least one year prior to the semester in which you plan to student-teach, and usually occurs at the end of the second academic year at UNCG (for 4-year students) or the end of the second fall semester for transfer students overloading to finish the program in three years.
Masters
Step 1: Apply for Admission to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro

You should be ready to submit the following materials with your Graduate School application:
- $65 application fee
- Transcripts from all institutions where coursework was completed
- All credentials must be in English.
- Where a degree was earned, the official transcript must indicate the name of the degree and the date awarded.
- If you are actively pursuing a degree at the time of application to UNCG, an unofficial transcript will be accepted until you are able to present an official transcript proving degree completion and confirming reported GPA.
- Three (3) letters of recommendation former professors, employers, or persons well-acquainted with the prospective student’s academic and/or performance potential
- Personal statement briefly outlining your academic and career goals
NOTE: The College of Visual and Performing Arts encourages students to submit materials at least 3 weeks prior to deadlines. From November – March, processing at The Graduate School can take 3 – 4 weeks. Submitting materials on or just prior to deadlines could result in a processing delay.
Step 2: Apply for admission to the School of Theatre
An intensive two-year degree dedicated solely to the development of the advanced actor pursuing a career in professional and/or academic theatre, appropriate for students intending to pursue professional careers in theatre, film, and/or television.
An intensive two-year degree dedicated to the development of well-rounded theatre designers within a scenographic tradition, this degree is structured to develop the artistry of those seeking specialized training and intending to pursue professional careers as artists, craftspersons, and teachers.
An intensive two-year degree designed to train theatre directors to become working artists in professional and academic theatre, providing advanced specialized training in the art and craft of directing.
An intensive two-year degree designed to educate theatre artists for leadership roles within the growing field of theatre with and for youth.
