SOM Areas of Study
The Voice Area at UNCG offers a rigorous, supportive learning environment where students develop as versatile performers, educators, and vocal professionals. More than 100 students pursue voice studies through the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Music in Performance, Bachelor of Music in Music Education, Master of Music, and Doctor of Musical Arts degree programs.
Our faculty are accomplished performers and experienced educators with expertise in art song, oratorio, opera, musical theatre, new music, diction, and vocal pedagogy. Through personalized instruction and mentorship, faculty help students build the artistry, technical skills, and professional experience needed for careers in performance, voice teaching, and music education.
Performance Opportunities
Voice students have frequent opportunities to perform in a variety of settings, including:
- Weekly studio and combined repertoire classes
- Voice Area recitals
- Solo degree recitals
- Solo opportunities with UNCG choral ensembles
- Opera Theatre productions and educational outreach programs
Students may audition for our award-winning Opera Theatre program, which presents chamber operas, fully staged productions with orchestra, and outreach performances for area schools.
Curriculum and Individualized Study
Courses supporting the voice degree programs include introductory and advanced studies in diction, song literature, performance techniques, and vocal pedagogy. All voice majors receive weekly private instruction, and advanced students benefit from individual coaching with members of the Collaborative Piano faculty.
Scholarships and Financial Support
Scholarships are available to promising undergraduate students pursuing Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Music degrees. Qualified Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts students may be considered for graduate assistantships, as well as competitive fellowships offered through the Graduate School.
Alumni Success
UNCG Voice alumni pursue a wide range of professional opportunities. Many graduates receive scholarships for advanced study at distinguished institutions, secure music teaching positions in North Carolina and across the country, participate in prestigious opera apprenticeship and young artist programs, and perform throughout the United States. Alumni also serve on voice faculties at colleges and universities nationwide.
