Voice

The Voice Area Faculty is dedicated to the highest standard of excellence across an extensive curriculum. Over 100 students are enrolled in the BA, BM in Performance, BM in Music Education, MM and DMA degrees in voice at UNCG.

Our eight faculty members are active performers and skilled pedagogues who demonstrate expertise in multiple specialties including art song, oratorio, opera, musical theater, new music, diction, and vocal pedagogy. We are committed to developing singers for careers in performance, pedagogy and music education.

Opportunities for performance include weekly studio repertoire classes, joint repertoire classes, area voice recitals, and solo recitals. Students are also eligible to audition for various solos within our outstanding choral ensembles, and for one of the many events presented by our award-winning opera theatre program. These include outreach tours to area schools, chamber operas, and fully staged productions with orchestra.

Graduate assistantships are available to MM and DMA students who qualify. The Graduate School also offers competitive fellowships to applicants who demonstrate outstanding academic skills.

Undergraduate scholarships are awarded to a number of our promising BM and BA students.

We offer a variety of courses in support of our degree programs. These include beginning and advanced study of diction, song literature, performance technique, and vocal pedagogy. All voice majors receive weekly private instruction. Advanced students receive individual coaching sessions with our Collaborative Piano faculty.

Many of our undergraduates are awarded scholarships for further study at other outstanding graduate schools, and others have secured music-teaching positions in schools throughout North Carolina and in other areas of the country. Recent graduate and undergraduate alumni have appeared with prestigious opera apprentice programs and as young artists across the United States, and many serve on the voice faculties at colleges and universities throughout the country.
