College of Visual and Performing Arts Dean bruce d. mcclung has announced the appointment of Emily Voelker as Assistant Professor of Art History in CVPA’s School of Art.

Emily Voelker is a historian of nineteenth-century art and the history of photography, whose work centers on transatlantic exhibition culture, Indigenous representation, and changing meanings and uses of the archive over time.

She holds a PhD from Boston University (2017), an MA from Tufts University (2008), and a BA from Emory University (2006). She has taught at Boston University and Vassar College and is the former Estrellita & Yousuf Karsh Assistant Curator of Photographs at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Her current book project, “Plains Indian Portraiture in Paris,” examines photographs of Northern Plains sitters either sent to, or made at, Parisian exhibitions in the closing decades of the nineteenth century. Focusing on the Lakota (Oglala) and Omaha, the manuscript contextualizes this exchange in the long preexisting entanglements between these Native nations and the French and traces the re-appropriated meaning of these pictures in their communities today. Her articles appear in the Benezit Dictionary of Artists Online, Opening the Album of the World–Photographs 1842–1896, Transatlantica, and Panorama: Journal of the Association of Historians of American Art.

Her work has been supported by fellowships from the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, the Smithsonian Institution, the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, the Buffalo Bill Center of the West, and the Peter Palmquist Memorial Fund, among others.

Students from the Middle Eastern Ensemble, Steelpan Ensemble, and a Jazz trio prepared this unique arrangement of the Egyptian tune “El Helwa Di” for a UNCG TEDx event. Each individual group also prepared a selection for the musical interlude. Unfortunately, the event was cancelled due to the outbreak of COVID-19. Special thanks to the ensemble leaders/directors David Aarons, Nabil Rahma and Julia Whelan, and to Sean Mulcahy who engineered sound and audio.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group.

Dear Friends,

To continue our public health efforts against COVID-19, the School of Music will be canceling all public performances from Monday, March 23 to the end of the Spring semester. This includes all School of Music student, faculty, and guest artist recitals and concerts, both on and off campus. During this time, our building will also be closed to the public. Thank you for your patience and understanding – our current priority is transitioning to online classes and lessons.

The arts community worldwide is suffering financially because of necessary social distancing, and we are no different. Cancellations to concerts, recitals, and even student and faculty travel will have an impact on our School.

Members of our community have inquired as to how they can help our students during this time of crisis. While we understand not everyone can provide financial support, for those who are interested in supporting our music community we offer the following suggestions:

• Consider not requesting a refund for a cancelled event if that makes sense for you and your budget.
• Consider donating to a relief fund for working artists such as the ArtsGreensboro Artist Relief Fund. These funds are designed to give aid to those whose performance income has been interrupted by the pandemic.

The residence hall includes a variety of arts facilities – open 24/7 – that allow students dedicated space to work on their creative endeavors without leaving where they live.

UNCG has been closely monitoring the complex and rapidly evolving Coronavirus (COVID-19) situation.  We are in close contact with local, state, and federal agencies as well as health officials and other universities to ensure we are making consistent, fact-based decisions about our activities and our operations.

As a result of these decisions, the School of Dance is canceling all events for the Spring 2020 term. This includes our MFA and BFA Thesis concerts, the Van Dyke/Risner celebration, and Spring Dances. The previously postponed “A Djeli’s Job” and Delta Chi Xi Barefoot Charity concerts are canceled as well. Refunds for tickets already purchased for any of these events can be issued. Dance Partners packages can also either be refunded or transferred to next semester. Please contact us at [email protected] if you would like to receive a refund. 

Auditions are moving to an online format. Those students who have already been confirmed and paid for the Spring auditions will receive instructions about how the audition process will proceed by email. 

We are waiting for direction from the University on commencement activities. As soon as we receive an update, we will pass that information along to you.
