Film: Human Flow
February 1, 2018 @ 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Humans have always been a migratory species to some degree, roaming nearly every inch of the globe, setting up homes, and developing proud traditions of hospitality to welcome visitors. But more recently, human history has become dominated by a different kind of migration – by men, women, and children who have no choice but to leave, sometimes to run, when bombs go off, or food is made too scarce, or repressive states threaten their very ways of being.
Human Flow is an epic film journey led by the internationally renowned artist Ai Weiwei that gives a powerful visual expression to this new era of massive human migration.Captured over the course of an eventful year in 23 countries, the film follows a chain of urgent human stories that stretches across the globe in countries including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, France, Greece, Germany, Iraq, Israel, Italy, Kenya, Mexico, and Turkey. Human Flow is a witness to its subjects and their desperate search for safety, shelter, and justice.
Directed by Ai Weiwei, 2017. 2 hrs 30 minutes. DVD. A short discussion led by Dr. Jeremy Rinker, Assistant Professor, Peace & Conflict Studies, UNCG will follow the film.
