After Hours Requests
To request card‑swipe access to the Music Building, faculty should complete the Key Request Form. Student access will be evaluated on a case‑by‑case basis. For after‑hours reservations—weekday evenings, weekends, or university breaks when the building is closed—key checkout must be arranged through the College of Visual and Performing Arts Dean’s Office.
Maintenance Requests
All routine maintenance requests should be submitted to the Building Manager. Routine items include issues such as burned‑out lights, temperature concerns, lock problems, clogged drains, broken glass, and other day‑to‑day facility needs. If a facility issue requires immediate attention, contact the Building Manager directly or call Facilities Operations at 336‑334‑5684 to initiate a maintenance request.
Office Cleaning and Trash Collection
The Facilities Services Department is responsible for maintaining the Music Building’s public areas and private offices. Public spaces receive daily service, while private offices are cleaned weekly. Occupants are responsible for disposing of large items; these should be taken to the dumpster enclosure at the loading dock or coordinated with the Building Manager for removal.
Office Furniture and Surplus Property
The School of Music does not maintain a standing inventory of office furniture. If you need furniture for your office, please contact the Building Manager to check whether any items are available before being sent to Surplus Property. You may also visit the UNCG Surplus Warehouse (by appointment) to browse the university’s regularly updated stock of office furniture and other surplus items.
Surplus/Disposal of State Property
State‑owned items that are no longer needed or are beyond repair may be transferred to UNCG Surplus Storage. Please note that the disposal of any Fixed Asset must be coordinated through the Facilities Manager. If you are unsure how to properly dispose of state property, contact the Building Manager for guidance.
All studio, classroom, and performance hall doors must be locked when you leave the space.
Rooms should be returned to their original condition. In Tew Recital Hall and the Organ Hall, stages should be cleared except for the piano(s); classrooms should be reset in proper rows; and Rooms 110 and 111 should be arranged according to the setup charts posted on the walls. If piano quilts or hinge pins have been removed in Tew or the Organ Recital Hall, they must be replaced before leaving.
If you ever feel unsafe while in a room in the Music Building, call 911 or 336‑334‑4444 (Campus Police Emergency). Practice rooms are also equipped with emergency buttons for immediate assistance.
For more information about campus safety, please visit the UNCG Police Department website.
Egress
At no time may exits or fire doors be blocked by School of Music equipment or building furniture. All stairways, landings, and areas beneath stairwells must remain completely clear of objects and free of combustible materials, including signage. Stairwells may not be used for storage under any circumstances. These practices constitute violations of Federal and State Fire Code. Any items found stored in a stairwell may be removed and discarded without notice.
Book Lockers
Red Book Locker Check-Out Instructions
Red/burgundy book lockers are checked out in the College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA) Dean’s Office (Music 220).
If students are CHECKING OUT a new locker:
- The student will find up to six (6) options for lockers they may be interested in checking out.
- They should bring those locker numbers to the front desk for us to review in the database.
- They should check for lockers that do not have a lock.
- For those without locks, the student should look in the lockers to see if there are items in the lockers.
- The CVPA Office Assistant will review the database to determine if one of the lockers is available.
- The student will then complete the Locker Checkout Agreement Form for the academic year. This information will be entered into the database.
- It is recommended that you place a lock on the locker as soon as possible.
If students are RENEWING a locker:
- The student will need to provide their name and locker # to the CVPA Front Desk Office Assistant by May 10 of the ending academic year.
- The student will then complete the Locker Checkout Agreement Form for the next academic year.
- The CVPA Office Assistant will double check student information currently in the database (name, phone #, and email address).
If students are RELEASING their lockers:
- You will need to provide your name and locker number to the CVPA Front Desk Office Assistant.
- The CVPA Office Assistant will find your locker # in the database. They will move your information to the comments section as a previous user and then mark the locker as available.
- Please remove your lock as soon as possible.
Students may request a gray instrument locker sized appropriately for their primary instrument by completing the Instrument Locker Request Form (linked below). Lockers are assigned based on availability, with priority given to music majors. Music minors and non‑majors may receive lockers depending on ensemble participation and approval from the Building Manager and Instrument Inventory Specialist. Renewal prompts are issued each semester.
Students must complete the Instrument and Locker Checkout Agreement once per academic year before submitting their first request. This agreement does not need to be resubmitted for subsequent requests within the same year.
Each student is eligible for one locker, assigned based on the size required and availability. If the School of Music is unable to provide a locker, the student will be placed on a waiting list for the remainder of the academic year. Waiting lists reset at the start of each new academic year.
Short Term Key Requests
Faculty and staff may check out keys from the College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA) Dean’s Office (Music 220) on a short‑term basis. A valid Spartan Card is required for all key checkouts. The loading dock is reserved exclusively for loading and unloading equipment, including musical instruments and gear for off‑campus performances, large palletized deliveries, and University Facilities equipment used within the building. The service drive provides access to the loading dock, trash dumpsters, official School of Music vehicle parking, and entry for UNCG Facilities vehicles. Please note the following:
- The loading dock is not an entrance or exit for general use. It should only be used for approved loading and unloading activities.
- Please do not prop the loading dock doors open or leave them unattended while moving multiple loads of equipment. Doing so creates a significant security risk for the building and negatively affects the HVAC systems for the performance halls and lobby due to rapid temperature and humidity changes.
- Controls for the loading dock lift are located in the Band Library (Music 139) and may be accessed through prior arrangement with the Ensembles Office (Music 344).
- Do not park in front of the loading dock lift. This area is reserved for the School of Music box truck and palletized deliveries.
- Parking in the service drive is at your own risk. The area is patrolled by Parking Services, and unauthorized vehicles—those without an S/Service permit—may be ticketed or towed. The School of Music does not have the authority to void or appeal parking citations.
Practice rooms are located on the first floor of the Music Building and are available to enrolled students during regular building hours. Private teaching is not permitted in practice rooms unless it is part of the sanctioned Private Lessons Program. Food and drink are not permitted, with the exception of water.
Except for the designated V‑Rooms (see “V‑Rooms” below), practice rooms operate on a first‑come, first‑served basis. A 15‑minute vacancy rule applies: if a student leaves a practice room for more than 15 minutes—regardless of whether personal belongings remain inside—the room may be claimed by another student.
Please do not leave valuables, especially instruments, unattended in practice rooms at any time.
Music 115A is available as a recording space for School of Music students. Users are responsible for running their own recording sessions; the School of Music does not provide a staff engineer for booked sessions. This space can be reserved through the School of Music Reservations System (Skedda).
This room is for recording only. Rehearsals and coachings are not permitted.
Permanent equipment in the studio includes an audio interface and headphone amp, guitar amp, bass amp, drum set, and a small grand piano. For additional information about electronic equipment, software, and gear usage, please see Music Technology Equipment and Facilities under (Recording and Live Event Services).
See Scheduling and Reservations for instructions, booking guidelines, and link to Skedda, the School of Music’s online self-service reservations platform.
Surplus items will no longer be stored in the area near the elevator and instrument lockers on the east end of the building. To have unused items removed from your office or studio, please complete the School of Music Surplus Removal Request Form and provide all required information. Once submitted, a Facilities request will be created to have the item(s) collected.
Needed Information:
- Name
- Location of item(s)
- Description of item(s) to be removed
Practice Rooms 107L, 107M, and 109M are equipped with VAE (Virtual Acoustic Environment) technology, which provides realistic acoustic simulations and creates the sensation of being immersed in sound. This technology allows musicians to experience how their playing would respond in a variety of performance venues.
These rooms may be reserved online through the Skedda reservation system. Keys for access may be checked out from the College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA) Dean’s Office. V‑Rooms are scheduled on a first‑come, first‑served basis.
