Artist Kukuli Velarde’s ceramic figures offer up a range of emotions and personalities. The joyful and angry, tender and violent, humorous and somber characters are based on a picture of a centuries-old vessel made by the indigenous Huastec people of present-day Mexico. As contemporary objects, Velarde incorporates a breadth of religious, mythological, and cultural references, as well as artistic and craft techniques.

Kukuli Velarde is the 2017 Falk Visiting Artist. Her exhibition “Isichapuitu” is on view at the Weatherspoon October 28, 2017-January 28, 2018. This talk is open to the public.
