Through this satellite exhibition, Wish You Were Elsewhere offers connection with the objects, artworks and people of the museum, at a time where connecting is not easy.

In the wake of the global pandemic, we created a COVID-safe residency, Shelter Elsewhere, to further our collaborative potential through a communal living experiment and exchange. This means no one else can enter the museum. Without access to the people and things we care for, we have to go somewhere else. We have carefully selected items from the collection, and the artworks made that embody alternative means of connecting.

Wish You Were Elsewhere features revered Alumni projects, beloved items from the museum’s collection, and debut works from our current staff and fellows – bringing the Elsewhere experience to you. Alumni works “I Dreamt I was a Jig-Saw Puzzle, and I’m Thrilled to Pieces,” “Permanent Resident,” and “Spirits and Guests,” explore ideas of displacement and home. Current Creative Catalyst Fellow and long-time collaborator, April Parker, premiers her new work, “Unveiling Monuments,” documenting her innovative forms of protest in the time of COVID. Selected objects from Sylvia Gray’s collection of thrift evoke the passage of time and nostalgia – whether glass jars filled with decades of debritus or worn toys from your childhood. We offer Wish You Were Elsewhere as another way to connect with our community until we can gather again at the museum.
