Emily Heilig, lecturer of Costume Technology, started her theatrical career as an actress receiving a BFA in Music Theatre from Shenandoah University and Conservatory. After graduating, she worked in Richmond, VA for 5 years as a touring children’s theatre actress then Assistant Costume Director for Theatre IV and Barksdale Theatre (now Virginia Repertory Company), Costume Designer for several local professional and community theatres, Stitcher/Dresser for Richmond Ballet, and Assistant Wardrobe Supervisor for Kings Dominion. Emily then decided it was time to pursue a Masters degree in costuming. She moved home to Charlotte, NC where she worked as Wardrobe Supervisor for Carowinds to reinstate her NC residency.
In 2008, Emily received her MFA in Costume Technology from UNC-Chapel Hill, having created costumes for PlayMakers Repertory Company and Carolina Ballet; including working with multi Tony award winner, William Ivey Long. While attending Chapel Hill, she focused in costume crafts honing her skills and passion for millinery, armor, and fabric manipulation. From Chapel Hill, Emily moved to NYC for a dream job; working for the Radio City Music Hall Rockettes. Her career progressed from there; working on Duloc wigs for the Broadway premiere of Shrek the Musical, creating hats and dressing a production with Cirque du Soleil Special Events, and managing the costume shop at Imagination Stage in Bethesda, MD.
Emily has a passion for sharing theatrical knowledge and enthusiasm with students. She has had the opportunity to teach Costume Technology at UNC-Chapel Hill and Costume Technology, as well as Intro to Theatre, at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. She is happy to be settled back home in North Carolina, with her husband and three boys, and for this opportunity to encourage and watch UNCG’s students excel beyond their dreams.
