Why should I join the UNCG Bands Of Sparta?
As a member of the Bands of Sparta, you will be a part of one of the largest and most visible performing groups on campus. You will have the opportunity to support and represent our sports teams, School of Music, and University in a wide-variety of performances, both on-campus and off-campus. The Bands of Sparta are a great way for non-music majors to continue to perform on their instrument and enjoy the college pep band experience.
Do I have to audition to be in the UNCG Athletic Bands?
There are NO auditions for membership in the UNCG Athletic Band. Our students come from a diverse background and experience levels, and everyone is encouraged to join the Bands of Sparta! The ability to read music, have a strong work ethic, and wanting to support the University and athletic teams are strongly encouraged out of everyone interested in the UNCG Athletic Bands.
Does UNCG provide instruments to the students?
Members of the UNCG Athletic Bands are provided with piccolos, sousaphones, mellophones, baritones, and both marching percussion and drum sets. Limited access is available for trumpets, clarinets, saxophones, and other instruments. Please contact our staff via the registration form for more information.
Do I need to be a music major to be in the Band?
Absolutely not! The Bands of Sparta do not require our members to be music majors. In fact, most of our members come from a variety of different majors outside of the School of Music, Theater and Dance. Nearly every major at UNCG is represented in the Band! The UNCG Athletic Bands are a great place for non-music majors to continue to perform on their instrument.
How often do the UNCG Athletic Bands rehearse?
The Bands of Sparta rehearses every Thursday night, from 7:00 – 9:00 in Room 111 in the School of Music. Rehearsals generally are held from the start of the semester until late October, and will continue in January. A complete list of rehearsals and performances is given in advance to all of the members of the band.
