The Studio Art concentration combines a general arts education with the development of studio skills. Coursework is done in Art History and Studio Art. The concentration is flexible to allow students to focus on one area or explore a broad range of courses.

Suggested Course Schedule for students pursuing a BA Studio Art

The schedule below outlines the recommended course sequencing for BA majors with a concentration in Studio Art. For more information on courses and requirements, see the UNCG course bulletin. For information on advising, see the Art Department’s page or contact the Department.

University Minimum Requirements: 122 total hours required, 36 of which must be at or above the 300 level.

Students should be aware that classes marked with Writing Intensive (WI) and Speaking Intensive (SI) markers are part of the GEC/CAR requirements for the BA in Studio Art. Each student is required to take 6 WI courses, at least one of which must be in the major (ART). Students must complete 2 SI courses, at least one of which must be in the major (ART). You may—and often do—choose to complete all or most of these within the Art Department. Do not put these off.

Be sure to check in with an academic advisor each semester to make sure you remain on track for graduation.

Department Minimum Requirements: 51 hours in Art.

This includes:
The Foundations Program (18 credit hours of Studio [ART], 9 credit hours of Art History [ARH])
An additional 15 credit hours in ART above the 100 level, 9 credit hours of which must be at the 300 level or above.
Three credit hours of ARH at or above the 200 level, 6 credit hours of Art History at or above the 300 level.

PLEASE NOTE: Students who take 15 or less credit hours each semester during their third and fourth years will need to enroll in 12 credit hours of summer school or winter session in order to graduate in four years.
