MFA in Music Direction for Musical Theatre Concentration
Master of Fine Arts, Music Direction for Musical Theatre Concentration
The School of Theatre offers the MFA in Drama with a concentration in Music Direction. The MFA is a terminal degree focused on developing individual artistry while providing advanced, specialized training for students pursuing careers in music direction for musical theatre. This intensive three-year program integrates conducting, vocal coaching, keyboard technique, collaboration, and live music direction within a focused course of study that prepares students for leadership in both professional and academic settings.
The graduate program balances theory and practice through a sequence of coursework in music, theatre, and performance, paired with substantial production work. Students pursue advanced study in conducting, musical preparation, rehearsal processes, and collaboration, and apply those skills throughout the academic production season. This work is supported by co-curricular opportunities with UNCG Theatre and related performance projects, where students regularly serve as music directors, accompanists, and collaborators. Together, coursework, production experience, and close mentorship help students build the practical skills and artistic judgment needed for the field.
