Poulenc’s THE DIALOGUES of the CARMELITES is based on the true-life Martyrs of Compiègne, who were executed by guillotine on July 17, 1794, just ten days before the end of the French Revolution Reign of Terror. The sixteen sisters who died that day exhibited extraordinary faith and paid the ultimate price and did not compromise when faced with great persecution.
