Weatherspoon Art Museum

About the Weatherspoon Art Museum at UNCG
The Weatherspoon Art Museum at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) has one of the foremost collections of modern and contemporary art in the Southeast. Through a dynamic annual calendar of exhibitions and educational programs, the Weatherspoon provides an opportunity for all students to consider artistic, cultural, and social issues of our time. All Art History courses are taught at the museum in large lecture hall and seminar formats. As a curricular resource, the Weatherspoon serves as a museum/classroom where works from the collection can be made available to UNCG classes for viewing and intimate study. In addition, School of Art faculty often design courses around works exhibited at the Weatherspoon Art Museum. Students are invited to attend public talks by renowned artists, critics, art historians, and curators.
The museum’s collection holds over 7,000 nationally and internationally known works, primarily 20th and 21st century American artists such as Alexander Calder, Louise Nevelson, Robert Rauschenberg, Eva Hesse, Cindy Sherman, Andy Warhol, Joyce Scott, and Alison Saar. Most notable, the collection features a painting from the Woman series by Willem de Kooning as well as prints and bronzes by Henri Matisse. The Dillard Collection is one of the finest university collections of works on paper; and the Lenoir C. Wright Collection includes traditional Japanese woodblock prints. The Weatherspoon hosts our annual MFA exhibition each spring.
The Weatherspoon Art Museum has hosted exhibitions of work by Leonardo Drew, Eileen Neff, Catherine Opie, Hans Hofmann, Judy Pfaff, Diana Al-Hadid, Nancy Rubins, Richard Mosse, Tom LaDuke, and Leslie Dill, among many other.
Yearly events held at The Weatherspoon Art Museum include:
