UNCGMT FAQ
Music Theatre FAQ
What is the B.F.A. in Musical Theatre?
A rigorous, performance-based, highly individualized training program combined with a liberal arts education. Students build a strong foundation of technique in the areas of acting, voice, and dance, and work in a variety of different styles, genres, and techniques to develop their own approach to their craft. Through individualized training and mentorship, students learn to expand and celebrate unique qualities that they possess which will make them an exciting and unique performer.
Who is the B.F.A. in Musical Theatre for?
Each year during our audition and recruitment cycle, the UNCGMT faculty looks for students who are passionate storytellers with a desire to broaden their worldview and commit to an intense and challenging four years of study. The ideal candidate is a unique individual, has a creative mind and spirit, is intellectually ready for a rigorous program, and is not afraid to get messy and make “mistakes” as they train.
How many applicants are accepted into the program?
UNCGMT is one of the most selective programs in the nation, accepting only 8-10 students per academic year. This small cohort size allows us to really train our students as individuals to prepare them for a career that demands individuality.
Do I get to take voice lessons?
Yes! The B.F.A. in Musical Theatre has hour-long, private vocal lessons beginning in your first semester. Building a healthy, reliable, flexible vocal instrument is an integral part of our training and these lessons (along with additional support) continue throughout 8 semesters of study.
What kinds of classes would I take?
You can view the full B.F.A. in Musical Theatre curriculum by visiting the curriculum page.
Can I double major or minor?
While doing a double major is more or less impossible while studying in a B.F.A program, many of our students have minors! UNCGMT students have minored in Psychology, Anthropology, Arts Administration, Dance, American Sign Language, Spanish, and so much more. With a campus full of world-class programs there are so many opportunities to expand your knowledge and explore all areas of study.
Can I study abroad?
Studying abroad for a full semester is difficult, but certainly not impossible. It simply takes careful planning with your advisor and perhaps a bit of extra work in other semesters. UNCGMT has developed a London intensive that travels to the UK every two years and includes intensive study in song interpretation, Shakespeare, devised theatre, historical dance styles, and more. This program takes place immediately after the spring semester for two weeks in early May.
What is student life like?
UNCG is a mid-size University with 20,000 students on campus. From Division I sports teams to Greek life and student clubs, you can find everything you want for the college experience here! Most of our first-year B.F.A. students live in Studio91, a newly renovated arts dormitory. And with an entire program comprised of only 32 students, studying with us means you will have regular mentorship and meaningful contact with your faculty on a daily basis.
What might I do after graduation?
Our alumni (and even current students!) have been seen in: Mean Girls National Tour; Aladdin National Tour; The Wiz National Tour/Revival; The Prom Broadway; Bandstand Broadway; The St Louis MUNY; New London Barn Playhouse; Virgin Voyages Cruise Line; Disney Cruise Line; and many others!
