Jonathan Golove, cello and theremin cello

November 1, 2024 @ 7:30 pm 9:00 pm

Cellist-composer Jonathan Golove presents a program of works for cello and theremin cello, featuring fellow composer-instrumentalists and UNCG faculty Mark Engebretson (alto saxophone) and Alejandro Rutty (electric bass).

In addition to original works composed by each performer, Golove will play Philip Glass’s monumental Songs and Poems (2007) and the “Louange à l’Éternité de Jésus” from Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time, in a new arrangement for theremin cello and six-string electric bass.

The theremin cello, an exceedingly rare instrument which calls upon the technique of the cellist to harness electronic sound without any actual strings, was invented by Lev Termen (aka Leon Theremin), more commonly known for his space-controlled theremin or etherphone.
