Between October 25-28, 2017, UNCG School of Dance Professor Duane Cyrus performed at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) in the New York premiere of Cynthia Oliver’s Virago-Man Dem. The work will tour through 2018 with performances in Chicago, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C among other cities. Described as a work that excavates layers of racial and gender performance through the shared lens of their Afro-Caribbean and African-American ancestries. With radical tenderness and dizzying force, Virago-Man Dem celebrates black masculinities in their infinite variety and nuance, constructing a sweeping tableau of embracing, sashaying, speaking, screaming, soaring individuals. The NY Times review called the piece, “compelling” and “sleekly produced.” Check out this Making of Virago from BAM, as well as a promotional video by artist John Boesche featuring Cyrus.
