College of Visual and Performing Arts Dean bruce d. mcclung has announced the appointment of Zachary Hobin as Visiting Assistant Professor of String Bass.
Hobin is a performer and educator with wide-ranging interests and passions. He is a regular guest musician with the North Carolina Symphony, Charlotte Symphony, and Charleston Symphony. A dedicated chamber musician, Hobin plays with the Silicon Valley Chamber Music Festival, Chamber Music Charleston, and Electric Earth Concerts, and is a co-founder and co-director of the Annapolis Chamber Music Festival. He is a committed advocate for new music and has performed with such groups as New York’s Argento Ensemble and in national and international solo recitals.
One of Hobin’s passions is to spread the joy of music to those who wish to learn more about it. He has previously been a faculty member of Duke University’s Music Department and its pre-collegiate String School. In the summer, he teaches and performs at the Luzerne Music Center in New York’s Adirondack region. Hobin has presented masterclasses around the country in addition to sustained engagement with community music schools in Bolivia and Ecuador.
He has toured with various groups in China, Japan, Singapore, and on both coasts and has worked with such musicians as Colin Carr, Claire Chase, George Manahan, Branford Marsalis, Jeffery Milarsky, Kaija Saariaho, John Zorn, and the JACK Quartet. Former teachers include Kurt Muroki, Thomas Sperl, Rachel Calin, Peter Dominguez, and Kate Nettleman.
Hobin received his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Stony Brook University in double bass performance. He also holds a master’s degree from Stony Brook and a bachelor’s degree from Oberlin Conservatory of Music. He performs on a ca. 1750 Italian double bass with a Victor Fétique French bow.
