Five of the country’s top female brass players will be on campus Friday, March 24th for a master class with students and a public performance as part of the UNC Greensboro Concert and Lecture Series (UCLS).
Winners of the 2019 American Prize in Chamber Music, Seraph Brass is a dynamic ensemble committed to engaging audiences with captivating programming. The group presents a diverse body of repertoire, which includes original transcriptions, newly commissioned works, and well-known classics. Seraph Brass released their debut studio album, Asteria, on Summit Records in January 2018, winning a Silver Medal Global Music Award.
Seraph Brass has toured extensively throughout the United States, China, Mexico, and Europe. This week the ensemble’s performance in Tew Recital Hall in the School of Music Building will include excerpts from Edvard Grieg’s Holberg Suite, Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata, and Franz Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody. The concert is at 8:00 p.m.
A recent review from Textura Magazine indicates that this is a performance not to be missed:
“The high caliber of the playing is often staggering (see the high-energy roller-coaster of a ride that is Dilorenzo’s three-and-a-half-minute Go), and the recording also benefits from democratic representation. The trumpeters naturally form a front line, but Asteria is a recording where trombone, horn, and tuba are as prominently featured; certainly no small amount of credit for that must go to those responsible for the seven pieces’ arrangements. One comes away from the release marveling at the performances and the rich, soaring sound generated by the five musicians.”
During their visit to campus, Seraph Brass musicians will also conduct a master class with students in Dr. Abigail Pack’s Horn Studio. The master class is open to all UNCG faculty, staff, and students. It will be held in Tew Recital Hall from 1:00–2:00 p.m.
Seraph Brass is the final UCLS performance this year. The 2023-2024 UCLS Season will be announced at the concert Friday night.
