Christopher Fleming, the School of Dance’s Technical Coordinator, passed away over Winter Break.

A Minnesota native, Christopher Fleming attended Oakland Community College before serving as studio assistant for a number of artists, including Performance Artist Karen Finley, choreographer Daryl Foster, choreographer Rosy Simas, and Daniel, a Japan-based installation/video artist. He also worked as a Stagehand, Stage Manager, Technical Director, and Production Manager for many dance, theatre, and opera companies, including the Bay Area Dance Series, Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, On the Board Theater in Seattle, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, North Carolina Museum of Art, MASS MoCa, the Sarasota Ballet of Florida, and the Palladium Theater in St. Petersburg.

Prior to joining the UNCG School of Dance in 2015 as Dance Technical Coordinator, Christopher worked at Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado; St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota; and the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia. Christopher loved everything about making art. His passion for finding the artist in every student and his delight in the artistic process with students and faculty in the dance theatre was ever-present. Whether he was making magic on the light board, puttering around with equipment in the theater, or sitting on his favorite bench outside of the Coleman Building listening to a podcast and feeding the birds (and sometimes the squirrels), Christopher Fleming was an artist through and through.
