College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA) Dean bruce d. mcclung has announced the appointment of Daniel Castro Pantoja as Assistant Professor of Musicology in CVPA’s School of Music.

Castro Pantoja is currently a Research Associate at the Center for Iberian and Latin American Music at the University of California, Riverside.

A native of Colombia, Castro Pantoja’s research projects have been funded by the Colombian Ministry of Culture and focus on Latin American state politics and music. His current book project examines the perceived relation between music, sound, and populism in Colombian state politics during the early twentieth century.

Castro Pantoja is the first Latinx recipient of the Society of American Music’s Wiley Housewright Dissertation Award and his work has been been published in journals such as Latin American Research Review, TRANS-Transcultural Music Review, the Journal of the American Musicological Society (forthcoming), Latin American Music Review (forthcoming), and Americas: A Hemispheric Music Journal (forthcoming). In addition, he is currently co-editing with Hedy Law and Hannah Hyun Kyong Chan a special issue on global music history pedagogy for the Journal of Music History Pedagogy. His work has appeared in the Smithsonian Folkways blog and Colombia’s Central Bank Music blog.

Castro Pantoja earned his PhD in Musicology from the University of California, Riverside, a MM in Classical Guitar Performance from the University of Akron, and a BM in Classical Guitar Performance from Loyola University. Castro Pantoja is a classical guitarist as well as a gaita and charango aficionado.
