College of Visual and Performing Arts Dean bruce d. mcclung has announced the appointment of Tori Foster to the position of Assistant Professor in New Media & Design.

Foster is a Toronto-based new media artist whose work explores the hidden systems and models that inform our visible environments. Through video, photography, and kinetic and interactive installation, Foster’s artistic practice seeks to unearth the archetypal patterns and emergent behaviors of vehicular traffic, pedestrian movement, and plant and animal activity in urban and natural environments.

She is the recipient of fifteen production and exhibition grants from the Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council, the Toronto Arts council, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.

Residencies and commissions include the Ethnographic Terminalia residency at the
Arts Incubator in Chicago and the Data Physicalization residency at the Lethbridge Agricultural Research Centre in Alberta, Canada. Her work has been presented in sixteen countries, including Germany, India, Korea, Australia, Brazil, and the United States, and her work is held in numerous private and corporate collections internationally.

Foster holds an MFA in Documentary Media and BFA in New Media from Ryerson University in Toronto Canada. From 2015 to 2017, she was based in Los Angeles as an Assistant Professor and the Head of Video/Digital Art at California State University, Northridge. She is currently cross appointed at Ryerson University as an Assistant Professor of New Media and Integrated Digital Arts in the School of Image Arts and the RTA School of Media.
