Spartan Jazz Collective: Mingus at 100
Charles Mingus, enigmatic bandleader, composer, and bassist, would’ve turned 100 in 2022. Mingus, who succumbed to Lou Gehrig’s disease in 1979, had a broad and fascinating career spanning four decades, collaborating with everyone from Louis Armstrong to Charlie Parker to Joni Mitchell. This centennial celebration will feature a wide array of his original music, equally influenced by the early jazz music of New Orleans, gospel, Ellington, western European classical, and jazz’s avant-garde.

1923 marked the birth of several jazz luminaries, as well as the beginning of Louis Armstrong’s long and storied recording career. UNCG's Miles Davis Jazz Studies Program celebrates this watershed year with saxophonist Rahsaan Barber joining Jazz Ensemble II for a diverse program of music by Thad Jones, Dexter Gordon, Wes Montgomery, Tito Puente, Milt Jackson, Sam Rivers, and many more.

Latin Jazz Ensemble
The Latin Jazz Ensemble specializes in Afro Cuban Jazz, Afro Rican Jazz, and other forma of Afro Caribbean and South American Music such as Salsa, Merengue, Bomba, Plena, and Bossa Nova. In addition, the ensemble gives students the opportunity to develop, strengthen, and expand their improvisational skills. The ensemble is committed to bringing to life these important musical repertories and the history of Latin Dance Music and Latin Improvisational Music.
