DESCRIPTION:Rennie Harris Puremovement American Dance Theater (RHPM) is the leading US street dance theater company\, and for over thirty-five years has been dedicated to preserving and disseminating hip-hop aesthetics and street dance culture through workshops\, classes\, history\, lecture demonstrations\, long-term residencies\, mentoring programs\, and public performances. With his roots in the inner-city\, Harris and RHPM present unique stories that are riveting\, intimate\, and honest. RHPM’s mission is to re-educate the public about hip-hop culture and street dance through its artistic work\, sharing the essence and spirit of street dance\, rather than the commercially exploited stereotype portrayed by the media.  \n\n\n\nDr. Lorenzo “Rennie” Harris is a leading ambassador for hip-hop. Harris grew up entrenched in hip-hop culture in all its forms—music\, dance\, language. Throughout his career\, he has embraced the culture and sought to honor its legacy\, believing that hip-hop and street dance is the purest form of movement in that it honors both African and African American-Latino culture. Free tickets will be available beginning September 30 and are limited to four (4) per request.  \n\n\n\n\n\nPatron Information\n\n\n\nVenue doors will open 45 minutes before the concert\, with seating beginning at that time. Ticket holders should be seated at least 15 minutes before the performance to guarantee their seat. After that time\, any unclaimed seats may be released to patrons in the standby line on a first-come\, first-served basis. \n\n\n\nLarge bags and backpacks are not permitted inside the concert venue. No flash photography or video recording permitted. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEstablished by an Act of Congress in 1798\, the United States Marine Band (“The President’s Own”) is America’s oldest continuously active professional musical organization. Its mission is unique—to provide music for the President of the United States and the Commandant of the Marine Corps. \n\n\n\nPresident John Adams invited the Marine Band to make its White House debut on New Year’s Day\, 1801\, in the then-unfinished Executive Mansion. In March of that year\, the band performed for Thomas Jefferson’s inauguration and it is believed that it has performed for every presidential inaugural since. In Jefferson\, the band found its most visionary advocate. An accomplished musician himself\, Jefferson recognized the unique relationship between the band and the Chief Executive and he is credited with giving the Marine Band its title\, “The President’s Own.” \n\n\n\nWhether performing for State Dinners or South Lawn arrivals\, events of national significance\, or receptions\, Marine Band musicians appear at the White House an average of 200 times each year. These performances range from small ensembles such as a solo pianist\, jazz combo or brass quintet to a country band\, dance band or full concert band. The diversity of music often presented at the Executive Mansion makes versatility an important requirement for Marine Band members. Musicians are selected at auditions much like those of major symphony orchestras\, and they enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps for permanent duty with the Marine Band. Most of today’s members are graduates of the nation’s finest music schools\, and more than 60 percent hold advanced degrees in music. \n\n\n\nIn addition to its White House mission\, “The President’s Own” performs an annual season showcase series of indoor concerts and a popular outdoor summer concert series on the National Mall. Musicians from the band are frequently highlighted in solo performances and participate in more intimate chamber ensemble recitals that feature a wide range of smaller instrumental groups. Marine Band musicians also perform in many different types of ceremonies and events throughout the Washington\, D.C.\, metropolitan area including the Presidential Inauguration\, Full Honors funerals at Arlington National Cemetery\, Honor Flight ceremonies for veterans at the National World War II Memorial\, Friday Evening Parades at Marine Barracks\, Washington\, D.C.\, and educational programs in schools throughout the National Capital Region. \n\n\n\nEach fall\, the Marine Band travels throughout a portion of the continental United States during its concert tour\, a tradition initiated in 1891 by “The March King” John Philip Sousa\, who was the band’s legendary 17th Director. As Director from 1880–92\, Sousa brought “The President’s Own” to an unprecedented level of excellence and shaped the band into a world-famous musical organization. Since Sousa’s time\, the band’s musical reach has extended beyond America’s borders on several occasions with performances in England\, Norway\, Ireland\, the Netherlands\, Switzerland\, Singapore\, and the former Soviet Union. During Sousa’s tenure\, the Marine Band was one of the first musical ensembles to make sound recordings. By 1892\, more than 200 different titles were available for sale\, placing Sousa’s marches among the first and most popular pieces ever recorded. \n\n\n\nWhile the Marine Band is firmly dedicated to preserving the unique musical traditions established over its long history\, it is equally committed to serving as a leading ensemble in the development of new repertoire for winds. In 2000\, “The President’s Own” commissioned David Rakowski’s Ten of a Kind\, a piece honored as a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in music in 2002. In 2007\, the band commissioned “Scamp” by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Melinda Wagner\, and the Marine Band premièred Scott Lindroth’s Passage at the 2010 Midwest Clinic in Chicago. In 2011\, the band commissioned and premièred Flourishes and Meditations on a Renaissance Theme by Michael Gandolfi at the American Bandmasters Association’s annual convention in Norfolk\, Va. Most recently\, music written for the Marine Band has included Gerard Schwarz’ Above and Beyond\, Jacob Bancks’ The Information Age and Laurence Bitensky to write Fearsome Critters\, the latter of which was premièred at the Texas Bandmasters Association Convention in San Antonio in July 2012. \n\n\n\nOn July 11\, 1998\, the Marine Band celebrated its 200th anniversary with a command performance at the White House and a gala concert at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington attended by President and Mrs. Clinton. Also during its bicentennial year\, the Marine Band was the only ensemble inducted into the inaugural class of the American Classical Music Hall of Fame in Cincinnati. \n\n\n\nGiven its status among American musical organizations\, “The President’s Own” continues to attract prominent guest conductors from major orchestras around the globe\, including Osmo Vänskä\, Leonard Slatkin\, José Serebrier and Gerard Schwarz. On July 12\, 2003\, the Marine Band returned to the Kennedy Center to celebrate its 205th anniversary in a concert featuring guest conductor John Williams\, renowned composer of American film and concert works and laureate conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra. Williams returned to the podium in 2008 to conduct the final concert of the Living History concert series celebrating the Marine Band’s 210th anniversary. In honor of the Marine Band’s 215th birthday\, John Williams composed and dedicated an original work to the Marine Band aptly titled “For ‘The President’s Own.’” \n\n\n\nThe Marine Band’s integral role in the national culture and in the government’s official life has affirmed the importance of the arts as a bridge between people. Since 1798\, the Marine Band’s mission has been to provide music for the President of the United States and the Commandant of the Marine Corps. As the only musical organization with that mission\, the Marine Band looks to the future\, viewing its history and tradition as the foundation upon which to build its third century of bringing music to the White House and to the American people.

The concert opens with a world premiere by student composer Chance Gatewood\, highlighting the School of Music’s commitment to fostering new music and the next generation of artistic talent. \n\n\n\nThe program also features flutist Joeli Schilling\, third-prize winner of the School of Music Student Artist Competition\, in a concerto performance that showcases both technical brilliance and expressive artistry. Complementing these student achievements are works by Joel Puckett\, Percy Grainger\, and David Maslanka\, composers whose music spans a wide emotional landscape while demonstrating the richness and versatility of the wind ensemble medium. \n\n\n\nFrom youthful energy and inventive creativity to moments of lyricism\, reflection\, and depth\, this program offers an engaging journey through the many voices of contemporary and twentieth-century wind music. \n\n\n\nBack to Program \n\n\n\n\nAbout the Soloist\nJoeli Schilling\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoeli Schilling is a Greensboro-based flutist and music educator pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts in Flute Performance at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro\, where she studies with Dr. Erika Boysen and serves as a Graduate Teaching Assistant. She holds a Master’s degree in Flute Performance from the University of Colorado Boulder. \n\n\n\nJoeli maintains a diverse career as a performer and educator\, with performances\, teaching\, and conference presentations throughout the United States and Europe. She is the first prize winner of the Raleigh Area Flute Association Young Artist Competition\, second prize winner of the Colorado Flute Association Young Artist Competition\, third prize winner of the South Carolina Flute Society Young Artist Competition\, and a winner of the National Flute Association’s 2024 Masterclass Performers Competition. \n\n\n\nAn avid advocate for new music\, Joeli frequently collaborates with emerging composers\, including Austin Perry\, whose flute sonata Sepulchre by the Sea was written for and premiered by Schilling in 2023. She has also premiered Perry’s wind quintet Adipocere at the Texas Music Educators Association and Annika Socolofsky’s quintet 7 Signs You’re Living in a Capitalist Hellscape. \n\n\n\nAs a passionate pedagogue\, Joeli has taught at the Boulder Symphony Music Academy\, maintains an active private studio\, and previously served on the Colorado Flute Association Board. She currently serves as the assistant exhibitor concert and showcase coordinator for the National Flute Association. Joeli has attended festivals including Brevard Music Center\, Texas Summer Flute Symposium\, and the Raffaele Trevisani Flute Course and has performed in masterclasses for artists such as Amy Porter\, Mark Sparks\, Alexa Still\, and Susan Milan. Joeli’s primary teachers include Erika Boysen\, Christina Jennings\, Lisa Garner Santa\, Spencer Hartman\, and Julee Kim Walker. \n\n\n\nBack to Program \n\n\n\n\nAbout the Wind Ensemble\n\n\n\n\nThe UNCG Wind Ensemble is the premier wind band of the UNCG School of Music\, uniting fifty outstanding musicians from across the United States and around the world. Its members—ranging from first‑year undergraduates to master’s and doctoral students in performance and music education—are selected through a highly competitive audition process. Ensemble musicians regularly earn top solo and chamber awards\, competitive scholarships and fellowships\, and professional positions in orchestras\, military bands\, teaching\, and arts leadership. Current students represent seventeen states\, Slovenia\, and Hong Kong. \n\n\n\nFor decades\, the ensemble has built a distinguished record of artistic excellence\, with acclaimed performances at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts\, Lincoln Center\, and leading venues throughout the eastern United States. Its catalog of more than twenty commercial recordings has received national recognition and helped position UNCG as a leader in wind band performance\, commissioning\, and recording. \n\n\n\nThe Wind Ensemble has been featured at major national and regional conferences of the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA)\, National Band Association (NBA)\, American Bandmasters Association (ABA)\, and Music Educators National Conference (MENC). The evening opens with Bizet’s spirited Farandole and features soprano soloists Janinah Burnett and Michaela Kelly in Richard Strauss’s luminous Four Last Songs and Morgen. \n\n\n\nAt the heart of the concert are two unforgettable interpretations of The Nutcracker. The UNCG Symphony Orchestra performs Tchaikovsky’s cherished orchestral suite\, followed by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn’s groundbreaking jazz reimagining. Heard side by side\, these works reveal how the same musical ideas can inspire vastly different sounds\, styles\, and traditions. \n\n\n\nBack to Program \n\n\n\n\nAbout the Soloists\n\n\n\n\nVersatile singer\, actor\, musician\, writer\, arranger\, and educator\, Janinah Burnett has thrilled audiences domestically and internationally in opera\, recital\, musical theatre\, jazz\, television\, and film. Some of her signature operatic roles include Mimí in La bohème\, Lëila in Les Pêcheurs des Perles)\, Donna Anna and Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni\, Micaëla in Carmen\, Marguerite in Faust\, and Violetta in La Traviata. An original cast member of Baz Luhrmann’s La Bohème on Broadway as Mimí\, she won a Los Angeles Theater Alliance Award and performed on the Tony Awards.  Janinah was on the roster of principal artists at the Metropolitan Opera for eight consecutive seasons debuting as Bianca in La Rondine.  \n\n\n\nMore recently Janinah was a member of the closing cast of Phantom of the Opera on Broadway\, making appearances as “Carlotta Giudicelli” since 2016.    \n\n\n\nIn February 2021\, Burnett released her debut album\, Love the Color of Your Butterfly\, which features musical arrangements and collaborations with some of the world’s best jazz musicians. Released on her own record label Clazz Records\, Love the Color of Your Butterfly is an amalgamation of jazz\, opera\, art song\, oratorio\, rhythm and blues\, and spirituals and introduces her concept of “Clazz\,” which encourages collaboration and redefines the parameters of genre while embracing parts of history that are erased\, widely unknown and forgotten. Love the Color of Your Butterfly has been featured in numerous publications including the Financial Times\, Playbill\, Broadway World\, Downbeat Magazine\, and Opera News.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSoprano\, researcher\, and teacher Dr. Michaela Kelly is Assistant Professor of Voice at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Previously\, she taught as lecturer at Scripps College and Chapman University. Michaela was recently awarded a 2026 Faculty Research Grant from UNCG to support her upcoming album release of Windows: Five Songs of Love by Alan Louis Smith with the Navona Record Label. Upcoming engagements for 2026-2027: soprano soloist for the Brahms Requiem with Cumberland Choral Arts\, soprano soloist with Raleigh Camerata\, soloist for Vier Letzte Lieder by Strauss with the UNCG Symphony Orchestra\, soloist with the Piedmont Wind Symphony saxophone ensemble\, as well as recitals in California\, Michigan\, and throughout North Carolina. Michaela will also be the guest clinician for the 2026 Guilford County All County Treble Chorus. \n\n\n\nA flexible and dynamic performer\, Michaela has sung with the Los Angeles Opera Chorus and Los Angeles Master Chorale on their GRAMMY award winning album “Ortiz:Yanga.” She is an avid recitalist and passionate about art songs. Recently\, Michaela performed as a fellow at the Cincinnati Fellowship of the Song and sang a mini-recital highlighting the benefits of cross training at the NATS National Conference. During her first year on faculty at UNCG\, she sang as the soprano soloist with UNCG Chamber Singers in Schubert’s Mirjam’s Siegesgesang\, as part of a vocal trio for UNCG’s annual Collage\, as well as with the UNCG new music ensemble\, Present\, Continuous. Michaela was a recipient of the inaugural American Art Song Prize at SongFest where she performed a recital curated and coached by Libby Larsen\, John Musto and Martha Guth. She has performed as a recitalist at Toronto Summer Music Festival\, the Classical Music Institute\, Source Song Festival and has appeared as a soloist with the UNCG Chamber Singers\, Claremont Concert Orchestra\, Thornton Wind Ensemble\, I Cantori di Carmel\, New England Conservatory Opera\, and NEC Choirs and Orchestra. \n\n\n\nMichaela was a recipient of the 2024 Emerging Leader Award from the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS). Michaela currently serves as Co-Vice President of North Carolina NATS and previously served as Vice President of Programs for NATS – Los Angeles. Her article “The Composition of a Voice Lesson: How a Motor Learning Classification Framework Affects Teacher Effectiveness” was published in the May/June 2025 edition of the Journal of Singing. She has presented her research at the Pan-American Vocology Association Symposium\, Mid-Atlantic Regional NATS Conference\, North Carolina Music Educators Association Conference\, Cal-Western NATS Conference\, and NATS National Conference. This research will culminate in an upcoming online course with Embodied Music Lab titled “The Reflective Studio Music Teacher” which will be released in the spring of 2027.  \n\n\n\nDr. Kelly holds a Bachelor’s of Music Education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro\, a Master’s of Music in Vocal Pedagogy from the New England Conservatory\, and a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance from the University of Southern California. \n\n\n\nBack to Program \n\n\n\n\nUNCG Orchestras\nThe vibrant UNCG Orchestra program has long been recognized for performance excellence\, adventurous programming\, and high artistic standards. DESCRIPTION:John Scofield and Electrospective\n\n\n\nThrough his fifty-four-year career\, three-time Grammy Award®-winner John Scofield has occasionally detoured from the traditions of straight-ahead jazz\, exploring a blend of funk and jazz\, which has led to some of his most popular projects. In late autumn of 2026\, Scofield looks back at many of his now classic fusion groove compositions with Electrospective. Not intending to replicate the earlier fan favorites\, he plans instead to revisit them with the seasoned perspective of several decades\, culling tunes from his Blue Matter\, Uberjam\, and AGoGo bands—each responsible for a few recordings—as well as new material in the same vein.  \n\n\n\nScofield looks forward to teaming up with a stellar band of colleagues\, Electrospective will rely on interpretative input from Scofield alum and super funk drummer/producer Adam Deitch (Lettuce)\, multidimensional Larry Goldings (Scary Goldings\, James Taylor) on keyboards\, and legendary bassist Oteil Burbridge (Dead & Co.\, Tedeschi Trucks\, Allman Brothers). SUMMARY:Samara Joy
DESCRIPTION:A native of the Bronx\, Samara Joy became entranced by classic R&B as a child and cut her teeth as a singer in her church’s gospel choir. And while her family history is deeply musical—her grandparents helmed the Philadelphia gospel group the Savettes\, and her father\, the musician and songwriter Antonio McLendon\, has produced\, composed and arranged his own astounding original work—she didn’t delve into the jazz tradition until a college student at SUNY Purchase. During her studies there\, she won the 2019 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition\, which introduced her to the larger jazz scene as a rising star to watch. She was heard\, by audiences and critics alike\, as a masterful interpreter of jazz standards and a rightful heiress of the sound\, technique\, and charisma that defined her jazz heroines—including Vaughan\, Betty Carter\, Abbey Lincoln\, and Carmen McRae.     \n\n\n\nJoy released her self-titled debut on the Whirlwind label in 2021\, followed a year later by Linger Awhile\, her breakout Verve debut\, of which DownBeat wrote\, “With this beautiful recording\, a silky-voiced star is born.” The album earned her a Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album in addition to a headline-making win for Best New Artist. A deluxe edition of the album was released\, as well as the EP A Joyful Holiday\, which took home Grammys for Best Jazz Vocal Album and Best Jazz Performance in 2025. Her new Verve album\, Portrait\, which Joy co-produced with the veteran trumpeter/bandleader and multi-Grammy winner Brian Lynch\, showcases the intimate\, soulful chemistry that she’s developed with her touring band\, already earning her an NAACP Image Award for Best Jazz Album. She previously held the position of Instructor of Tuba and Euphonium at the University of Northern Iowa\, and has also served on the music faculties of Virginia Commonwealth University\, Virginia State University\, Longwood University\, the University of Richmond\, and Shenandoah University. Stephanie is active as a masterclass teacher and as a clinician for middle and high school bands.  \n\n\n\nStephanie is a founding member of Calypsus Brass\, a brass quintet dedicated to performing new works and providing high-quality recordings for composers. Calypsus is committed to promoting the works of composers from historically marginalized groups\, and serves as an Ensemble-in-Residence for Rising Tide Music Press. Stephanie is Principal Tuba of the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony\, and has also performed with the Virginia Symphony\, the Williamsburg Symphony\, the Capital Wind Symphony\, and the Virginia Grand Military band. She has also contributed to recording projects at Spacebomb Records in Richmond\, VA. Stephanie’s recent solo performances have focused on music for tuba with electronic accompaniment\, music by women composers\, and her own transcriptions and arrangements for low brass. She has appeared as a soloist at the International Tuba Euphonium Conference\, the Northeast\, Southeast\, and Midwest Regional ITEA Conferences\, the Army Band Tuba-Euphonium Workshop\, and the International Women’s Brass Conference. Stephanie also writes and gives presentations on the topic of mindfulness in the practice and performance of music.  \n\n\n\nStephanie holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Shenandoah University\, a Master of Music degree and Artist Diploma from Yale University\, and a Bachelor of Music degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. Paul Dooley’s Fantasy of Colors and Roger Dickerson’s Essay for Band highlight the range and expressive power of contemporary wind music. Shuying Li’s Coping Cadences will feature a sextet of UNCG faculty musicians. \n\n\n\nGabriela Ortiz’s Kauyumari\, arranged by Michael Brignolo\, draws inspiration from the blue deer of Huichol mythology. The concert concludes with John Mackey’s monumental The Frozen Cathedral\, premiered by the UNCG Wind Ensemble in 2012. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Wind Ensemble\n\n\n\n\nThe UNCG Wind Ensemble is the premier wind band of the UNCG School of Music\, uniting fifty outstanding musicians from across the United States and around the world. Its members—ranging from first‑year undergraduates to master’s and doctoral students in performance and music education—are selected through a highly competitive audition process. Ensemble musicians regularly earn top solo and chamber awards\, competitive scholarships and fellowships\, and professional positions in orchestras\, military bands\, teaching\, and arts leadership. Current students represent seventeen states\, Slovenia\, and Hong Kong. \n\n\n\nFor decades\, the ensemble has built a distinguished record of artistic excellence\, with acclaimed performances at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts\, Lincoln Center\, and leading venues throughout the eastern United States. Its catalog of more than twenty commercial recordings has received national recognition and helped position UNCG as a leader in wind band performance\, commissioning\, and recording. \n\n\n\nThe Wind Ensemble has been featured at major national and regional conferences of the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA)\, National Band Association (NBA)\, American Bandmasters Association (ABA)\, and Music Educators National Conference (MENC). The ensemble has also collaborated with prominent composers and performers\, including Pulitzer Prize–winning composer Karel Husa and other influential figures in the field. \n\n\n\nRecent highlights include performances at the Music Center at Strathmore; a joint concert with the United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own”; a twelve‑day international tour through the Czech Republic\, Austria\, and Italy\, culminating in a featured performance at Prague’s renowned Dvořák Hall; and a tour of the Southern United States that concluded with an appearance at the national conference of the College Band Directors National Association. \n\n\n\nBack to Program \n\n\n\n\nUNCG Bands\nThe UNCG Bands are devoted to the performance\, study\, and advancement of wind band music at the highest artistic level. SUMMARY:Ben Folds
DESCRIPTION:Ben Folds is an Emmy-nominated singer-songwriter who has created an enormous body of genre-bending music\, which includes pop albums with Ben Folds Five\, multiple solo albums\, a holiday album\, and numerous collaborative records.   \n\n\n\nHe currently tours as a pop artist\, while also performing for over two decades with some of the world’s great symphony orchestras.  \n\n\n\nFolds\, who served for eight years as the first-ever Artistic Advisor to the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) at the Kennedy Center\, stepped down from his post when President Trump announced his takeover of the Center. Just days before the US presidential election\, Folds recorded two sold-out performances with the NSO\, which he released as a live album in 2025 that debuted at the top of the Billboard classical and classical crossover charts.  \n\n\n\nA New York Times best-selling author\, Folds has also created new music for film\, television\, and theatre\, including original songs for an ongoing series of animated Peanuts specials on Apple TV.   \n\n\n\nIn 2022 Folds launched a music education charitable initiative in his native state of North Carolina entitled “Keys for Kids\,” which provides funds and keyboards to existing nonprofits that offer free or affordable piano lessons to school-age children from economically disadvantaged households. In the United States\, Eric has performed or conducted at multiple Percussive Arts Society’s International Conventions (PASIC)\, Midwest Clinics\, state days of percussion\, and music educator conventions.  \n\n\n\nA Fulbright Scholar\, Eric studied and performed throughout northeastern Brasil. Living in Recife\, Pernambuco\, he progressed his study of Maracatu performing with the percussion group Quebra Baque. During this time\, Eric was a Regency Professor at the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) and held the role as Artistic Director of the LapTop Percussion Ensemble.   \n\n\n\nHe has served on staff with the Cavaliers\, as a Percussion Consultant with Phantom Regiment\, and instructor and/or arranger for the Spirit\, Carolina Crown\, and Madison Scouts drum and bugle corps. Additionally\, he has served as a consultant for the Catawba Ridge High School Percussion Ensemble (2024 WGI Percussion Scholastic Concert World Champions)\, Music City Mystique\, University of North Texas Drum Line\, and as Faculty for the Music for All World Percussion Symposium\, among others.  \n\n\n\nHis solos and books have been published by Musicon Publications\, Ox and Lamb\, TapSpace\, and Row-Loff. His co-authored book\, All-Inclusive Audition Etudes\, has been adopted for use by various state music educators’ associations\, and he recently contributed a chapter to Rehearsing the Concert and Marching Percussion Ensemble by Meredith Music(compiled by James Campbell).   \n\n\n\nCurrently\, Eric is Professor of Percussion Studies at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro\, where his percussion ensembles have been named winners of the 2015 and 2021 PAS International Percussion Ensemble Competition (IPEC). She regularly collaborates with orchestras\, wind symphonies\, chamber ensembles\, opera/theater companies\, and new music ensembles across the United States\, often premiering\, touring and recording new works written for her by living composers. Haven is the recipient of a 2021 Barlow Endowment for Music Composition award with composer David Biedenbender and a 2021 Chamber Music America Classical Commissioning Grant with composer Ivette Herryman Rodríguez. She is a dedicated teacher and serves as Assistant Professor of Voice and Choral Music at UNC Greensboro. There she maintains an active voice studio and she conducts the UNCG Treble Ensemble. Kesselman also co-directs the Heretic’s Guide to Musicianship: A Score Study and Interpretation Workshop with Kevin Noe. A frequent guest clinician at colleges and universities across the United States\, Kesselman specializes in voice teaching\, leadership\, entrepreneurship\, musicianship\, young composer mentoring\, chamber music\, audience development\, programming\, interdisciplinary collaboration\, harnessing vulnerability in performance\, and community engagement. \n\n\n\nKesselman holds degrees in voice performance and music education from Rice University and Michigan State University. Ensemble musicians regularly earn top solo and chamber awards\, competitive scholarships and fellowships\, and professional positions in orchestras\, military bands\, teaching\, and arts leadership. Current students represent seventeen states\, Slovenia\, and Hong Kong. \n\n\n\nFor decades\, the ensemble has built a distinguished record of artistic excellence\, with acclaimed performances at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts\, Lincoln Center\, and leading venues throughout the eastern United States. Its catalog of more than twenty commercial recordings has received national recognition and helped position UNCG as a leader in wind band performance\, commissioning\, and recording. \n\n\n\nThe Wind Ensemble has been featured at major national and regional conferences of the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA)\, National Band Association (NBA)\, American Bandmasters Association (ABA)\, and Music Educators National Conference (MENC). The ensemble has also collaborated with prominent composers and performers\, including Pulitzer Prize–winning composer Karel Husa and other influential figures in the field. \n\n\n\nRecent highlights include performances at the Music Center at Strathmore; a joint concert with the United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own”; a twelve‑day international tour through the Czech Republic\, Austria\, and Italy\, culminating in a featured performance at Prague’s renowned Dvořák Hall; and a tour of the Southern United States that concluded with an appearance at the national conference of the College Band Directors National Association. \n\n\n\nBack to Program \n\n\n\n\nUNCG Bands\nThe UNCG Bands are devoted to the performance\, study\, and advancement of wind band music at the highest artistic level. DESCRIPTION:Carmen Bradford with UNCG Jazz Ensemble I\n\n\n\nCarmen Bradford is jazz royalty\, a 2024 Count Basie Orchestra Family member\, and Grammy Award® winner for Basie Swings the Blues: The Count Basie Orchestra. She’s been nominated five times for Grammy Awards and is the recipient of the Los Angeles Jazz Society’s Jazz Vocalist Award. With her body of work\, which reflects her vast experience\, versatility\, and technical brilliance\, she has carved out her place in jazz history and continues to contribute to the preservation of this uniquely American art form.  \n\n\n\nShe was discovered and hired by William “Count” Basie when she was just twenty-two; she went on to be the featured vocalist with the legendary Count Basie Orchestra for nine years and has continued to perform with them regularly throughout her career. All four of her Grammy Award nominations are for albums with the Count Basie Orchestra\, including two in the 1980s and a third\, Big Boss Band\, with guitarist George Benson. (She and Benson performed the classic duet\, “How Do You Keep the Music Playing\,” on the Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.)
