SUMMARY:Honors High School Jazz Band and Jazz Ensemble I with special guest John Scofield
DESCRIPTION:The Miles Davis Jazz Studies Program presents the 27th Annual Honors High School Jazz Band\, November 21–22\, 2026\, featuring guitarist John Scofield. The two-day event consists of big band rehearsals\, clinics\, and improvisation master classes\, and concludes with a performance by the Honors Band\, John Scofield\, and the UNCG Jazz Ensemble I directed by Steve Haines. \n\n\n\nThrough his fifty-four-year career\, three-time GRAMMY Award®-winner John Scofield has occasionally detoured from the traditions of straight-ahead jazz\, exploring a blend of funk and jazz\, which has led to some of his most popular projects. In late autumn of 2026\, Scofield looks back at many of his now classic fusion groove compositions with Electrospective. Not intending to replicate the earlier fan favorites\, he plans instead to revisit them with the seasoned perspective of several decades\, culling tunes from his Blue Matter\, Uberjam\, and AGoGo bands—each responsible for a few recordings—as well as new material in the same vein.  \n\n\n\nScofield looks forward to teaming up with a stellar band of colleagues\, Electrospective will rely on interpretative input from Scofield alum and super funk drummer/producer Adam Deitch (Lettuce)\, multidimensional Larry Goldings (Scary Goldings\, James Taylor) on keyboards\, and legendary bassist Oteil Burbridge (Dead & Co.\, Tedeschi Trucks\, Allman Brothers). With this repertoire so frequently (and loudly) requested by audience members\, Scofield is glad to have a band that will truly do the music justice.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Miles Davis Jazz Studies Program at UNCG is a unique and innovative undergraduate jazz program designed to emulate the traditional process of learning jazz\, through a combination of mentorship\, real-world playing experiences\, and a communal approach to learning. Although the program is housed in one of the largest music schools in the Southeast\, it is kept intentionally small\, resulting in an intensive and highly personalized learning environment. \n\n\n\n UNCG offers the following degree programs for students interested in studying Jazz: \n\n\n\n\nBachelor of Music (B.M.) – Performance\n\n\n\nPost-Baccalaureate Certificate in Jazz Studies\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTicketPriceAdult$12.00Seniors$9.00Students$6.00\n\n\n\n\nPurchase Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\nParking

SUMMARY:The Steve Haines Trio with special guest Joey Calderazzo
DESCRIPTION:Experience straight-ahead jazz with The Steve Haines Trio\, featuring the powerhouse rhythm section of internationally renowned pianist Joey Calderazzo\, bassist Steve Haines and drummer Kobie Watkins. Having locked into a swinging musical language for over 15 years\, they provide a propulsive foundation that serves both the curiosity and soulfulness of the jazz tradition. The trio is joined by a heavyweight saxophonist and luminary Gregory Tardy. He brings a fresh\, creative spark to this group\, providing spontaneous melodies for the rhythm section. This performance promises an evening of world-class musicianship\, characterized by interplay\, deep grooves\, and the kind of improvisation that only happens when seasoned masters share the stage. His legacy as an artist teacher is documented by one of his former students\, Dr. Judy Hutton\, in her 1993 DMA treatise. In 1994\, at the age of ninety\, Ericourt played a memorable all-Debussy recital as the guest artist for the UNCG Focus on Piano Literature symposium.  His recordings of the complete piano music of Debussy were reissued on the Ivory Classics label in 2003 to honor the centenary of his birth. \n\n\n\nThe Ericourt Residency was founded in 2007 through a gift from Mr. Bill Heins\, a friend of Daniel Ericourt and a cousin of Mr. Ericourt’s widow Jayne Winfield Ericourt. Jayne continues to be a beloved presence at many School of Music keyboard events. \n\n\n\nSince its founding in 2007\, the Ericourt Residency has brought these renowned artists to UNCG: José Feghali\, Jon Nakamatsu\, Jacques Després\, Pascal Rogé\, David Owen Norris\, Charles Richard-Hamelin\, Daria Rabotkina\, Craig Sheppard\, Lydia Artymiw\, Sara Davis Buechner\, Inna Faliks\, and Drew Petersen.
