The Casella Sinfonietta brings faculty and student musicians together to explore that question through three vivid and contrasting works from the early 20th century. \n\n\n\nSilvestre Revueltas’ Homenaje a Federico García Lorca combines rhythmic vitality with an elegiac tribute to the Spanish poet. Paul Hindemith’s Der Schwanendreher draws inspiration from German folk melodies\, transforming them through inventive harmonies and virtuosic writing. Darius Milhaud’s La création du monde reflects the influence of jazz through syncopated rhythms\, colorful instrumentation\, and exuberant energy. \n\n\n\nTogether\, these works reveal modernism not as a single musical style\, but as a meeting place for cultural traditions\, experimentation\, and bold new forms of expression. \n\n\n\nBack to Program \n\n\n\n\nAbout the Soloist\nScott Rawls\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nViolist Scott Rawls has appeared as soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States\, Canada\, Mexico\, Japan\, and Europe.  Recent chamber music endeavors include performances with Dmitry Sitkovetsky\, Branford Marsalis\, Sergey Antonov\, Michelle Cann and the Reynolda Quartet.  With the Nikkanen/Rawls/Bailey string trio\, he has played tours in Alaska\, Washington\, Arizona and Texas.  His solo and chamber music recordings can be heard on the Centaur\, CRI\, Nonesuch\, Capstone\, and Philips labels.   \n\n\n\nA strong proponent of new music\, Rawls has premiered dozens of new works by prominent composers.  Most notable\, he has toured extensively as a member of Steve Reich and Musicians.  As the violist in this ensemble\, he performed the numerous premieres of Daniel Variations\, The Cave and Three Tales by Steve Reich and Beryl Korot\, videographer. SUMMARY:Honors High School Jazz Band and Jazz Ensemble I with special guest John Scofield
DESCRIPTION:The Miles Davis Jazz Studies Program presents the 27th Annual Honors High School Jazz Band\, November 21–22\, 2026\, featuring guitarist John Scofield. The two-day event consists of big band rehearsals\, clinics\, and improvisation master classes\, and concludes with a performance by the Honors Band\, John Scofield\, and the UNCG Jazz Ensemble I directed by Steve Haines. \n\n\n\nThrough his fifty-four-year career\, three-time GRAMMY Award®-winner John Scofield has occasionally detoured from the traditions of straight-ahead jazz\, exploring a blend of funk and jazz\, which has led to some of his most popular projects. In late autumn of 2026\, Scofield looks back at many of his now classic fusion groove compositions with Electrospective. Not intending to replicate the earlier fan favorites\, he plans instead to revisit them with the seasoned perspective of several decades\, culling tunes from his Blue Matter\, Uberjam\, and AGoGo bands—each responsible for a few recordings—as well as new material in the same vein.  \n\n\n\nScofield looks forward to teaming up with a stellar band of colleagues\, Electrospective will rely on interpretative input from Scofield alum and super funk drummer/producer Adam Deitch (Lettuce)\, multidimensional Larry Goldings (Scary Goldings\, James Taylor) on keyboards\, and legendary bassist Oteil Burbridge (Dead & Co.\, Tedeschi Trucks\, Allman Brothers). With this repertoire so frequently (and loudly) requested by audience members\, Scofield is glad to have a band that will truly do the music justice.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Miles Davis Jazz Studies Program at UNCG is a unique and innovative undergraduate jazz program designed to emulate the traditional process of learning jazz\, through a combination of mentorship\, real-world playing experiences\, and a communal approach to learning. Although the program is housed in one of the largest music schools in the Southeast\, it is kept intentionally small\, resulting in an intensive and highly personalized learning environment. \n\n\n\n UNCG offers the following degree programs for students interested in studying Jazz: \n\n\n\n\nBachelor of Music (B.M.) – Performance\n\n\n\nPost-Baccalaureate Certificate in Jazz Studies\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTicketPriceAdult$12.00Seniors$9.00Students$6.00\n\n\n\n\nPurchase Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\nParking

Her recording of the concerto with the New York Youth Symphony won a GRAMMY Award in 2023 for Best Orchestral Performance. She won a GRAMMY Award in 2025 for Beyond the Years: Unpublished Songs of Florence Price\, recorded with soprano Karen Slack\, which features 19 unpublished songs composed by Price. Her acclaimed debut solo album Revival\, featuring music by Price and Margaret Bonds\, was released in May 2023 on the Curtis Studio label. She has also recorded two Price piano quintets with the Catalyst Quartet as a part of the quartet’s UNCOVERED series. A champion of emerging talent\, Cann and cellist Tommy Mesa recorded Our Stories\, an album of new works by five living composers of color\, which was released in November 2023. \n\n\n\nA celebrated chamber musician\, Cann has collaborated with leading artists including the Catalyst\, Dover\, and Juilliard string quartets\, Imani Winds\, violinists Timothy and Nikki Chooi\, soprano Karen Slack\, and mezzo-soprano J’Nai Bridges. Recent residencies include the Gilmore International Keyboard Festival and the National Conference of the Music Teachers National Association. She has recorded lessons for tonebase\, the popular piano lesson platform. She has also served on the juries of the Cleveland International Piano Competition\, the Kauffman Music Center International Youth Piano Competition\, and the piano competition of the Music Academy of the West. \n\n\n\nCann holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in piano performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music\, where she studied with Paul Schenly and Dr. Daniel Shapiro\, and an Artist’s Diploma from Curtis Institute of Music\, where she studied with Robert McDonald. She is also on the piano faculty of the Manhattan School of Music. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDaniel Ericourt Artist Residency in Piano\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Ericourt Residency honors the artistry of the great French pianist Daniel Ericourt (1903-1998)\, who held the position of Artist in Residence at the UNCG School of Music from 1963 through 1976. His legacy as an artist teacher is documented by one of his former students\, Dr. Judy Hutton\, in her 1993 DMA treatise. In 1994\, at the age of ninety\, Ericourt played a memorable all-Debussy recital as the guest artist for the UNCG Focus on Piano Literature symposium.  His recordings of the complete piano music of Debussy were reissued on the Ivory Classics label in 2003 to honor the centenary of his birth. \n\n\n\nThe Ericourt Residency was founded in 2007 through a gift from Mr. Bill Heins\, a friend of Daniel Ericourt and a cousin of Mr. Ericourt’s widow Jayne Winfield Ericourt. Jayne continues to be a beloved presence at many School of Music keyboard events. \n\n\n\nSince its founding in 2007\, the Ericourt Residency has brought these renowned artists to UNCG: José Feghali\, Jon Nakamatsu\, Jacques Després\, Pascal Rogé\, David Owen Norris\, Charles Richard-Hamelin\, Daria Rabotkina\, Craig Sheppard\, Lydia Artymiw\, Sara Davis Buechner\, Inna Faliks\, and Drew Petersen.
