Scott performs live while his YouTube videos are projected on the big screen\, including selections from films\, video games\, and so much more. Even the audience gets involved\, contributing music and sound effects during the performance through a unique mobile phone app. Come and experience a fusion of live music and digital media like you’ve never seen before!  \n\n\n\nSelections will be announced from the stage. \n\n\n\n             \n\n\n\nDOWNLOAD FROM THE APPLE APP STORE / DOWNLOAD FROM THE GOOGLE PLAY STORE  \n\n\n\n“YouTube: Live on Stage!” utilizes a custom mobile phone app for some selections during the show. Please download the “Scott Sutherland on Stage!” app for free from either the Apple App Store or Google Play Store at the links below.   Please silence cell phones during the pre-show and through the beginning of the concert until instructed to access the “Scott Sutherland on Stage!” mobile phone app and turn the cell phone volume up. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA life-long resident of Southern California\, Scott Sutherland has been hailed as “the second craziest tuba player I know” by famed American composer\, Joan Tower. He is a member of the Redlands Symphony\, Riverside Philharmonic and has been spotted in the back row of the Chicago Symphony\, San Francisco Symphony\, Los Angeles Philharmonic\, San Diego Symphony and many more. Likely due to clerical errors\, Scott has performed at the front of the stage as a soloist with the San Diego and Idyllwild Arts Symphony Orchestras\, as well as the Riverside and Burbank Philharmonics. He has also recorded for film\, television and video game soundtracks\, including the major motion pictures Pearl Harbor\, Batman vs. Superman\, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom\, and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. \n\n\n\nFor 11 years\, Scott was a founding member\, tubist and pianist of the international touring ensemble\, Presidio Brass. During his time with the quintet\, he performed in 43 states\, Canada and China. \n\n\n\nHe began the popular Scott Sutherland Music YouTube Channel in 2016 which includes multitrack videos of film\, television and video game music\, featuring Scott playing euphonium\, tuba\, cimbasso\, piano and percussion. He won top prizes in several national and international piano competitions\, including the Liszt-Garrison International Piano Competition\, New York Artist International Competition\, and St. Louis Artist Presentation competition. He has performed in many states in the US\, as well as multiple countries throughout Europe\, a notable example being a well-reviewed solo recital at Carnegie Hall.  In 2008 he nearly lost the index finger of his left hand\, but thanks to a successful surgery he made a near full recovery.  \n\n\n\nHe has been a soloist with several orchestras\, and worked with conductors such as Hans Vonk. As a chamber pianist Vincent\, performed with musicians like Dmitri Sitkovetski\, members of the Ciompi Quartet\, Red Clay Quartet\, and his wife\, Dr. Ināra Zandmane. He has collaborated with several composers including the Argentinean composer Alejandro Rutty\, who wrote a piano concerto for him that premiered at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro Symphony Orchestra. \n\n\n\nHighly acclaimed performances were in London\, England\, the Van Cliburn Festival\, and Harpa Hall in Iceland. As a composer\, he won  the 2025 International Fidelio Piano Composition Competition in Madrid\, Spain. Dr. van Gelder’s recordings have been played on radio and tv stations in the US as well as The Netherlands.  \n\n\n\nIn June of 2018 he performed at Harpa Hall in Reykjavik Iceland\, where he performed the world premiere of one of his own works\, ‘Guardians of Iceland-Eylin’s Journey’—a large\, multi-movement piece based on Icelandic legends\, a piano performance accompanied by artwork from his then 13 year old daughter\, Natalie van Gelder. Their next project\, ‘Ardenuir: The Stone in the Sword\,’ saw its premiere in 2022 at the Virginia Somerville Sutton Theatre in Greensboro\, North Carolina. They subsequently toured many concert halls in North Carolina.  \n\n\n\nIn September 2024\, Natalie published her first animated short film\, ‘Home Cooked Meals’\, with an original soundtrack written and performed by Vincent van Gelder. This short film is a featured animation at the NC Film Festival\, the Cary Film Festival\, the Raleigh Film and Art Festival\, and OUT at the Movies International Film Festival.  \n\n\n\nIn 2024\, Dr. van Gelder was invited to do record works by Jacobo Palm and other Caribbean composers for the Palm Foundation in The Netherlands. This is an ongoing project. \n\n\n\nDr. van Gelder studied in Holland\, Latvia\, and the US\, receiving two Masters and subsequently a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in piano performance from the University of Missouri at Kansas City. His most influential teachers were Leslie Howard\, Czerny-Stefanska\, Teofils Bikis\, Arnis Zandmanis\, Wilfred Delphin\, and Richard Cass.   \n\n\n\nHe has been a member of the piano faculty at Duke University.  He is the founder and president of the Triad Institute for Young Musicians.

SUMMARY:Honors High School Jazz Band and Jazz Ensemble I with special guest John Scofield
DESCRIPTION:The Miles Davis Jazz Studies Program presents the 27th Annual Honors High School Jazz Band\, November 21–22\, 2026\, featuring guitarist John Scofield. The two-day event consists of big band rehearsals\, clinics\, and improvisation master classes\, and concludes with a performance by the Honors Band\, John Scofield\, and the UNCG Jazz Ensemble I directed by Steve Haines. \n\n\n\nThrough his fifty-four-year career\, three-time GRAMMY Award®-winner John Scofield has occasionally detoured from the traditions of straight-ahead jazz\, exploring a blend of funk and jazz\, which has led to some of his most popular projects. In late autumn of 2026\, Scofield looks back at many of his now classic fusion groove compositions with Electrospective. Not intending to replicate the earlier fan favorites\, he plans instead to revisit them with the seasoned perspective of several decades\, culling tunes from his Blue Matter\, Uberjam\, and AGoGo bands—each responsible for a few recordings—as well as new material in the same vein.  \n\n\n\nScofield looks forward to teaming up with a stellar band of colleagues\, Electrospective will rely on interpretative input from Scofield alum and super funk drummer/producer Adam Deitch (Lettuce)\, multidimensional Larry Goldings (Scary Goldings\, James Taylor) on keyboards\, and legendary bassist Oteil Burbridge (Dead & Co.\, Tedeschi Trucks\, Allman Brothers). With this repertoire so frequently (and loudly) requested by audience members\, Scofield is glad to have a band that will truly do the music justice.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Miles Davis Jazz Studies Program at UNCG is a unique and innovative undergraduate jazz program designed to emulate the traditional process of learning jazz\, through a combination of mentorship\, real-world playing experiences\, and a communal approach to learning.
