Summary:

February 1, 1960. Inspired by the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, four Black students at North Carolina A&T University sit down at the lunch counter inside of the Greensboro H.W. Woolworths, ask to purchase coffee and are refused. Day by day their movement grows, as they are joined by more A&T students, then others from Dudley High School, Bennett College and three white women from the Woman’s College (now the University of North Carolina at Greensboro). Based on the incredible events of the Civil Rights movement, this original musical short film by composer J. Quinton Johnson (Hamilton) and screenwriter Melvin Tunstall, III (Beautiful, the Carol King Musical) explores the legacy of the Greensboro Four, the importance of meaningful allyship, and the continued fight for social justice today.

This project was commissioned as part of Spartan New Musicals by the UNCG School of Theatre and Musical Theatre Program during the 2020-21 production season. Spartan New Musicals was conceived as a Covid-safe production alternative for musical theatre students, with the goal of centering writers whose voices have been marginalized in the American musical theatre.  All musical numbers were safely audio pre-recorded and filmed during April of 2021. In order to maintain a Covid-safe environment, the group scenes were filmed as a staged reading in August of 2021.

This musical short film is just the beginning of a larger development process for this original musical work. Please reach out to musicaltheatre@uncg.edu if you are interested in partnering with us on the continued development of One Week at Woolworths.

Summary:

A new musical adaptation of the Shakespeare classic!

“Named one of The New York Times’ best shows of 2017, As You Like It is an immersive dream-like tale of faithful friends, feuding families and lovers in disguise. Forced from their homes, Orlando, Duke Senior, his daughter Rosalind and niece Celia, escape to the Forest of Arden, a fantastical place of transformation, where all are welcomed and embraced. Lost amidst the trees, the refugees find community and acceptance under the stars. Featuring an original folk-pop score by Shaina Taub, with a flexible-sized cast and running 90 minutes long, As You Like It is appropriate for all audiences and groups. Fall under love’s spell with this magical story!”
—Concord Theatricals

“Taub and Woolery have transformed As You Like It into a celebration of community, difference, and diversity. Right now, that is very welcome.”
—The Daily Beast Review

“Shaina Taub and Laurie Woolery’s adaptation of As You Like It, which played at the Seattle Rep this past week as part of the theater’s Public Works program, gives the Bard a modern spin. There are gender swapped roles (male characters played by women, and vice versa). There’s a range of sexual preferences. There’s a pesky vegetarian, lecturing the local villagers on why it’s not right to eat those pretty deer. And oh yes, it’s also a musical (lyric and music by Taub).”
—The Northwest Music Scene

“There may be no such thing as too much Shaina Taub.” —The New York Times

“Go and see this one.” The New York Times Review —NY Times Critic’s Pick and one of their best Shows of 2017!

“Taub and Woolery have transformed As You Like It into a celebration of community, difference, and diversity. Right now, that is very welcome.”
—The Daily Beast Review

Summary:

“A young orphan and his mates are shipped off from Victorian England to a distant island ruled by the evil King Zarboff. They know nothing of the mysterious trunk in the captain’s cabin, which contains a precious, otherworldly cargo. At sea, the boys are discovered by a precocious young girl named Molly, a Starcatcher-in-training who realizes that the trunk’s precious cargo is starstuff, a celestial substance so powerful that it must never fall into the wrong hands. When the ship is taken over by pirates – led by the fearsome Black Stache, a villain determined to claim the trunk and its treasure for his own – the journey quickly becomes a thrilling adventure.” —MTI Shows

Peter and the Starcatcher is all about storytelling as a lively (and live) art, and the energized complicity that s forged between the teller and the listener. …The story simultaneously being told and celebrated is as elaborate, simple, cozy and scary as the best bedtime stories are.” —The New York Times

“An absurdly funny fantastical journey!” —Entertainment Weekly

Peter and the Starcatcher is a tiny show, but spectacle, wit, and joy spill out of it like treasure from a magic pocket. A cast of twelve, a couple of trunks, and a versatile length of rope yield more storytelling than most oversize spectaculars can manage. … A miniature classic.” —New York Magazine

Summary:

icarus x apollo: On New Year’s Eve, college seniors Icarus and Apollo stand at a crossroads: Icarus is ready to follow his boyfriend Apollo to the ends of the earth following their upcoming graduation, and Apollo is sensing that he and Icarus have the potential to destroy each other if they continue with their relationship. As the minutes count down toward midnight, Icarus and Apollo must confront their pasts as the cosmic arrangement of the order of the universe hangs in the balance. icarus x apollo reevaluates the Greek myth of Icarus, a fearless young man who flew too close to the sun wearing wings constructed by his father. Perhaps we were not told the whole story.

Momo: This is the enthralling tale of Momo, an orphan girl who has made her home in a ruined amphitheater on the outskirts of a bustling, nameless city. Momo has a unique gift — in her presence troubles become less burdensome, conflicts are resolved, and imaginations take flight. But Momo’s world is threatened when mysterious little gray men appear, promising wealth and success to people who hurry through life now, saving time and depositing it in a Timesaving Bank. Realizing that all that is precious — life itself — is at risk, Momo sets out on a perilous mission to defeat the men in gray. This is truly a story for our times, an imaginative fantasy and a tale of suspense with far-reaching implications about the quality of life today.

The Gender Gallery:Growing into Our Expansiveness: The Gender Gallery is an ongoing interdisciplinary theatre project exploring the expansiveness of gender. This project is led by River Hedgepeth with support from several UNCG undergraduate students across disciplines that have been working for the past seven months investigating the complexities of gender by conducting interviews and surveys, leading community workshops, devising theatrical work, and collaborating with artists. During this time the team also organized the interactive gallery experience that took place at the Greensboro Project Space on February 25th which had 150 people in attendance. That night participants experienced two devised projects, several creative submissions from artists across the country, and living exhibits where their participation was key. It was a night of questioning and pushing the boundaries of theatre, art, gender, and the use of space while creating a mosaic of lived experiences and celebrating the expansiveness of gender. The Gender Gallery Project Team: River Hedgepeth, H Grissett, Bekah O’Reilly, Milo Kiandost, Eden Maynard, Annabelle Kizer, Amabel Prisk, Brett Esther, Jonah Montgomery, Morgan Gaige Young

The Gender Gallery: Growing into Our Expansiveness is a devised play inspired by interviews, surveys, conversations, and workshops surrounding the exploration of the expansiveness of gender through language, movement, and community. In this celebration of gender expansiveness, we find themes of community, expression, love, joy, and hopes and dreams of the future.

About the Amplify Black Voices Festival of Greater Greensboro:
Building on Greensboro’s rich legacy of social justice and engagement in the Civil Rights Movement, Amplify Black Voices Festival of Greater Greensboro unites seven local college theater departments to collaboratively produce four theater performances focusing on African-American lives and history. Staged at four different college theater venues in Spring 2022, the cast and crews for each will be blended from the seven departments. After each performance, the actors and director will return to the stage to reflect on the significance of black lives and stories and racial inequity. Our target audience includes university/college communities, the greater Greensboro community, and Guilford County Public Schools.
