The UNCG Miles Davis Jazz Studies Program offers a personal and dynamic education for incoming students. Several small jazz groups, two large jazz ensembles, and many supportive courses in improvisation, arranging/composition, history, theory, ear training, pedagogy, and piano skills lead to the Bachelor of Music in Performance (Jazz Studies). While it is beneficially housed in one of the largest music schools in the Southeastern United States, the Miles Davis Jazz Studies Program is small, committed, and specialized. World-class jazz faculty are available not only for leading classes but for mentorship and performance with our students. Our focus is certainly not the path of least resistance: we study by rote, with an emphasis on the blues, swing, improvisation, published composition and arranging, and recording experience. We offer many opportunities for students to perform with clinicians, who recently have included Peter Bernstein, Lee Konitz, John Ellis, Marcus Printup, Joel Frahm, Seamus Blake, and Ellis Marsalis.
For those who wish to make a contribution to our hard working jazz program as a tax incentive, please contact Chad Eby at [email protected].
