Exhibition: Louise Fishman: A Retrospective

November 3, 2017

Exhibition opens today and continues through December 22, 2017.

The Weatherspoon Art Museum is the only southern venue for the traveling exhibition, “Louise Fishman: A Retrospective.” This first museum survey of the artist’s prolific career features work from 1967 to the present. Fishman employs the formal language of Abstract Expressionism to create large-scale gestural paintings that share the physicality, dynamism, and emotional power of that movement, without its bravado. Fishman’s work is highly informed by her deep commitment to feminism, and aspects of her Jewish background.

The exhibition traces the course and development of Fishman’s career. From hard-edged grid paintings of the 1960s, she moved to woven-and-stitched works and the explosive “Angry Paintings” of the 1970s. In 1988, a transformative visit to Auschwitz and Terezin led to a group of paintings inspired by Jewish themes; many of these works are among the forceful and gestural abstractions for which she is widely known today.
