In the interest of safety, the members of the organizing committee have unanimously decided to CANCEL all activities, rehearsals, and performances on Saturday and Sunday, January 15-16, 2022 on the campus of UNCG associated with the Dennis W. AsKew Memorial Weekend.
The weather forecast for Greensboro and central North Carolina is calling for a major snow and ice storm on Sunday which will likely paralyze all travel and may cause power failures as well. We anticipate that UNCG may also close the campus in response to the storm. Performers and guests were coming from all over the country and the North Carolina Brass Band members also come from a very wide, multi-state area. The risks associated with travel, potential loss of the electricity and possible loss of the venue itself were all important factors in reaching the very sad decision to cancel the event.
Our sincere thanks to all of you who were scheduled to perform this weekend and to those who were attending to pay tribute to Dr. AsKew. The Dennis W. AsKew Memorial Weekend involved many people from across the country and we will be in touch with all of you as soon as new plans can be developed.
Dr. Dennis W. AsKew passed away unexpectedly on January 28, 2021, and he is missed by family, friends, and the Greensboro and UNCG communities. In celebration of his life and legacy, we invite you to be part of a memorial weekend in his honor, January 15–16, 2022.
Hosted at the UNCG School of Music in UNCG Auditorium, with performances by alumni, guest artists, and the North Carolina Brass Band, this memorial will pay tribute to Dennis through music.
