CVPA EDI SPEAKER, Wednesday, February 15th

February 15, 2023 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

CVPA is sponsoring an all-College event with Jaida Grey Eagle on Wednesday, February 15th from 2:00 to 3:30 pm in the UNCG Auditorium. Mariam Stephan, Chair of the CVPA EDI Committee, writes: “Jaida Grey Eagle is an Oglala Lakota artist, currently located in St. Paul, MN. Jaida is a photojournalist, producer, beadwork artist, and writer. She is a member of the Women’s Photograph, Indigenous Photograph, and 400 Years Project. Jaida is a co-producer on the Sisters Rising Documentary, which is the story of six Native American women reclaiming personal and tribal sovereignty in the face of ongoing sexual violence against Indigenous women in the United States and has recently received an Honorable Mention at the Big Sky Doc Festival. She is passionate about bringing awareness to Indigenous issues, especially those which impact Indigenous women. The EDI Committee believes she will resonate deeply with all students who want to see social action and change. We have invited her to speak about her work—and Indigenous visual storytelling through photography with her various projects. Jaida Grey Eagle’s visit represents a much-needed step towards a currently unestablished Plan of Action missing from the CVPA’s EDI Land Acknowledgement. We need to do more than just recognize that we are located on the traditional lands of the Keyauwee and Saura Nations, but ask ourselves how we are recognizing, addressing, supporting and educating our community about this history and what role we should play is memorializing the past, resolving to transform it, and taking steps to move towards a stronger and supportive community.”
