Cultural Reproduction is an art installation and an ongoing interactive culturally conscious body of work by UNCG BFA undergrad student Cristal Zeballos.
The Cultural Reproduction installation is a visual reproduction and replication of cultural items and touristic products in ceramic hand-building, slip-casting and multimedia. These replicas serve as embodiments of the traditional and vibrant cultural colors of Bolivia.
The reproductive nature of the slip-casting reflects the commodity of culture, rapid development, and reproduction of products; particularly highlighting the current touristic trade struggles.
This installation will open a window into Bolivian culture to the Greensboro community in a way that can both be appreciated and create a discourse on navigating foreign cultural items and contemporary practices. She creates interactive works that utilizes Bolivian instrument’s, candies, and souvenirs.
Cristal’s work stems from her connection to Bolivia and its presence of culture in her identity and family. Using personal experiences, historical and current Bolivian narratives, and establishing a connection to a contemporary audience. .
During open hours 12pm – 5pm Tuesday – Friday, and 2pm – 5pm on Saturday, Cristal will be stationed within the installation to facilitate interaction with the artwork and its cultural implications on advocacy and social-economic critique. RSVP for the opening and/or closing reception for a led and immersive experience. Any and all are welcome to view and/or participate in the interactive cultural celebration of Bolivia.
