Paul Stewart retired from the UNC Greensboro School of Music at the end of the Spring Semester, 2016, after 46 years of service. He holds music degrees from Indiana University, University of Illinois and Florida State University.
He served many years as chair and coordinator of the keyboard area. During his tenure he created and organized the annual summer piano camp in cooperation with the Summer Camp Director, John Locke. He was inducted into the Music Camp Hall of Fame in 2012. Stewart also started the annual High School Keyboard Day.
As an active performer, Paul Stewart appeared four times as piano soloist with the North Carolina Symphony in the early 1970’s performing works by Liszt and Mozart. Dr. Stewart has been a participant in the Focus on Piano Literature seminars directed by John Salmon and Andrew Willis. For the 2000 Focus, Stewart premiered “Jupiter’s Moon’s,” a six movement piano solo composition written for him by renowned composer Judith Lang Zaimont.
As a 44-year member of the Music Teachers National Association, Professor Stewart has served in elected and appointed positions at all levels of the State, Division and National level, culminating in his election as National MTNA President, 2005-2007. During his MTNA presidency, the national board approved his proposal for a new National Senior Piano Duet Competition. Subsequently, he has initiated a North Carolina Music Teachers Association Piano Duet competition. Association awards have included the 2003 MTNA Foundation Fellow Award, the 2008 New York Music Teachers Association “Special Citation” in recognition of outstanding contributions to the musical community as a performer, pedagogue and MTNA leader, the 2009 NCMTA Life-Time Service Award and the 2011 NCMTA “Teacher of the Year” award.
Paul Stewart has had a long time interest in Piano Ragtime music. He has presented workshops, lecture recitals and performances at state conferences and local music teacher meetings in California, Minnesota, Kansas, Wisconsin, Georgia, Florida, Texas, Hawaii, West Virginia, Indiana, and Tennessee, as well as Ragtime Festivals in Missouri, Colorado and California. He has also presented Ragtime sessions for music organizations in Manchester, England and Bologna,Italy. His 2007 Ragtime CD is titled “Rhythm and Rags.”
