Undergraduate

Step 1: Apply for Admission to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro

Full admission to many of the programs within the College of Visual and Performing Arts is a two-step process involving a successful secondary application and/or an audition in addition to acceptance into the University by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Acceptance to the University prior to submission of your CVPA academic program application or audition is not a requirement, though you are strongly encouraged work on these applications and auditions concurrently so as to meet University scholarship deadlines and at a minimum have submitted an application to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions prior to your audition. You can contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions for more information at (336) 334-5243 or visit their website at admissions.uncg.edu.

Ready to begin the process? First, start your application for undergraduate admission to UNCG through our Student Portal or the Common Application.

Step 2: Apply for admission to the CVPA

Please choose the area of study you are interested in:

Art

Note: All incoming Art students must first apply as BA, not BFA.

All students pursuing a studio degree enter the department as candidates for a BA degree in Studio Art. Upon completion of the foundational program, students seeking to join the BFA program in Art Education, New Media and Design, Painting, Photography, Printmaking and Drawing, or Sculpture and Ceramics will submit a portfolio of their work. Admission to any BFA concentration is contingent upon a successful portfolio review by a rotating committee of art department faculty.

View more information on the School of Art application process.

Arts Administration

There is currently no audition for entry into the BA in Arts Administration. Students will be reviewed by the Arts Administration Program Director to ensure adequate and timely progress within the degree program. Further requirements may need to be met.

Dance

Acceptance to the Dance program is contingent on admission to the University either before or after your audition date. Your space will not be held if you are not admitted to the University. To apply to the School of Dance and submit an audition, please submit a completed School of Dance application. The application must be submitted to the Department by the application deadline, typically a week before the scheduled audition date.

Once your request is processed, you will receive a confirmation via e-mail stating that the Department of Dance has received your audition request.

Music

All students interested in pursuing a major in Music at UNCG must apply to the School of Music in addition to the Undergraduate Admission Office and receive an offer of admission from both areas.

Students planning to pursue the Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Music program are not required to audition unless they plan to seek private lessons as part of their course of study. The short essays in the School of Music application are especially important for the faculty review and admission process of BA applicants. Make sure all responses are thoughtfully considered before submission.

Students seeking admission to the Bachelor of Music (BM) in Performance or Music Education programs are required to audition along with submitting their School of Music application, and some areas may require supplementary information.
Students desiring to minor in Music are not required to audition or complete the secondary School of Music application, but should the student want private lessons, an audition is required.

Find the most up to date audition dates, audition requirements and the undergraduate School of Music application on the School of Music application pages.

Theatre

All students applying to a degree program in the School of Theatre must be admitted to the University prior to enrollment. Each program’s secondary admission requirements are detailed below.

Bachelor of Arts in Drama
Students academically admitted into the BA in Drama by the UNCG Undergraduate Admission Office are automatically admitted into the BA in Drama by the School of Theatre. No additional secondary admission requirements must be met at this time for this program.

Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting or Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre
To be accepted into the BFA Performance Programs, you must complete an application and video prescreen via Acceptd. After a successful prescreen, you will be invited to a final audition on campus. Students audition for the BFA in Acting and BFA in Musical Theatre for Fall term entry only and prior to first-year enrollment at UNCG. To keep class size small and allow for individual attention, these programs are highly selective.

Visit Acceptd for deadlines and to begin the BFA in Acting or BFA in Musical Theatre application and audition process.

Bachelor of Fine Arts in Design and Theatre Technology, Bachelor of Fine Arts in Technical Production
Provisional admission is granted to the BFA in Design/Technology and the BFA in Technical Production during the first two semesters of enrollment. At the end of Fall semester of the first year, students meet the faculty to discuss their goals. At the end of the second semester of the first year, following the completion of a production assignment, students interview for admission to the program. Students should consult their faculty advisors for detailed interview requirements. Admission to these programs is very competitive.

Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre Education
To be accepted into the BFA Theatre Education program, you must first be admitted to the University. You must then be admitted to the Teachers Academy before you are officially categorized as a BFA in Theatre Education major. Application for admittance into the Teachers Academy must be made at least one year prior to the semester in which you plan to student-teach.
