Dido is Purcell’s only real opera and an important work in the scope of Baroque Opera. \n\nThe UNCG Opera Theatre\, under the direction of David Holley\, annually produces at least four operas. In the fall\, “Tour to the Schools” reaches over 10\,000 area school children and a chamber opera is presented in November (Amahl and the Night Visitors in even years). In the spring\, the School of Music and the School of Theatre join forces on a large-scale opera\, and the UNCG Opera Theatre collaborates with the Greensboro Opera to present GO’s signature outreach program\, “Opera at the Carolina\,” in which every fifth grader in Guilford County (6\,000+) attends a live opera at the downtown Carolina Theatre. \nSince 1993\, UNCG’s productions have regularly earned awards in the National Opera Association’s Annual Opera Production Competition\, including seven first place awards for: Susannah\, Little Women\, Orpheus in the Underworld\, The Consul\, Dialogues of the Carmelites\, Amahl and the Night Visitors\, and Don Giovanni. Second place was awarded for our productions of Gianni Schicchi\, Albert Herring\, La vida breve\, L’Enfant et les Sortilèges\, and Philip Glass’s Galileo Galilei\, which Mr. Glass attended\, and he worked with our cast. \nIn the spring of 2009\, the UNCG Opera Theatre proudly presented the world premiere of Libby Larsen’s Picnic which was commissioned in 2004 by a generous grant from the Charles A. Babock Foundation. \n

Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nAnthony Taylor\, clarinet\, has been on the faculty of the University of North Carolina College of Visual and Performing Arts and Principal Clarinet of the Winston-Salem Symphony since 2007. He has been an Artist/Teacher for the Eastern Music Festival since 2013 and served on the faculty of the Hot Springs Music Festival (Arkansas) from 2008–2012. He has formerly held positions with the Spokane Symphony\, the Boise Philharmonic\, Washington State University\, Eastern Washington University\, and Whitman College. Taylor’s clarinet playing can be heard on recordings on the Navona\, Centaur\, Naxos American Classics and Gothic recording labels\, and the most recent releases are two Centaur records projects with New Music Raleigh. The most recent is the world premiere recording of Brett William Dietz’s opera introspective Headcase\, and another recent release is the debut recording of composer DJ Sparr\, 21207. He can also be found on youtube; his video promoting his March 2011 basset clarinet performances of the Mozart concerto with the Winston-Salem symphony now has nearly 100\,000 views. In 2014\, Taylor was among the first performers of Donald Crockett’s Dance Concerto(please see media page for recordings). He has appeared at the International Clarinet Association ClarinetFest®\, with a notable performance of John Adams’s clarinet concerto Gnarly Buttons in 2010 and in 2011\, the world premiere of UNCG composer Alejandro Rutty’s work for Guitars\, for two clarinets and Ableton Live-based electronics. In recent years\, Taylor has been expanding his pedagogical skills through extensive study of human movement and the Alexander Technique\, and expects to complete his ATI certification as a teacher of the Alexander Technique some time during the 2016–17 academic year. Taylor holds degrees from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music\, the Florida State University and Washington State University. His former teachers include Steve Cohen\, Ron Aufmann\, Richard Hawkins\, Frank Kowalsky\, Jim Schoepflin\, and Joseph Brooks. \n \nClarinetist\, composer\, educator\, and new music collaborator Luke Ellard strives for art that continually reaches out\, valuing a relational spirit\, informed engagement\, and unapologetic authenticity. \nFor Luke\, collaboration is what gives music life. As clarinetist\, they have performed with members of Bang On a Can All Stars\, Eighth Blackbird\, International Contemporary Ensemble\, Fifth House Ensemble\, Arkansas Symphony\, and Lone Star Wind Orchestra. Their current performance projects center around their self-produced solo cross-genre/electronic band LE\, and commissioning new exciting works for the clarinet. \nTheir collaborative spirit is reflected in their life as a composer as well\, drawing inspiration from a personal and communicative place. Their music has been performed by groups such as New Trombone Collective (Blue Interjections\, finalist in the 2013 Slide Factory International Composition Contest)\, the North Texas Wind Symphony (The Seer\, concerto for Bassoon and Wind Ensemble)\, HOCKET (someone else’s days\, #What2020SoundsLike)\, the University of Texas Symphony Band (Shifting Tides)\, Michigan State University Concert Band\, Barkada Quartet (threads of execution)\, the Mother Falcon String Quartet (all I’m feeling right now\, winner of Golden Hornet Composer Lab’s String Quartet Smackdown III)\, and in collaboration with cellist Nick Photinos (haven’t yet\, Bang on a Can Summer Festival). \nDr. Ellard joined the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in the Fall of 2023 as Visiting Assistant Professor of Clarinet\, having previously served on faculty at the University of Oklahoma and Midwestern State University while teaching privately and performing in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Luke earned their Doctor of Musical Arts in Clarinet Performance with related studies in Contemporary Music and Music Entrepreneurship at the University of North Texas\, studying under Kimberly Cole Luevano. Additionally\, Luke has earned degrees from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music (James Campbell & Eric Hoeprich)\, the University of Texas at Austin (Yevgeniy Sharlat\, Dan Welcher\, & Donald Grantham)\, and Louisiana Tech University (Lawrence Gibbs\, Joe L. Alexander).

Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n \n   \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nThe UNCG Wind Ensemble is a highly select concert band of fifty performers majoring in music at the UNCG School of Music. Performers in the current Wind Ensemble are drawn from sixteen states\, Slovenia\, and Hong Kong. The ensemble has enjoyed a distinguished record of performance throughout its history. In January 1992\, the UNCG Wind Ensemble performed “A Tribute to John Philip Sousa” to a capacity crowd of 2\,700 at the Concert Hall of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington\, D.C. Twice\, the Wind Ensemble earned critical acclaim from The Washington Post following concerts in the nation’s capital. The Wind Ensemble has performed throughout the eastern United States in recent years including the first-ever performance\, in 1987\, by a North Carolina collegiate ensemble in Lincoln Center\, New York City. The Wind Ensemble performed that same year in West Virginia\, Virginia\, Pennsylvania\, and Washington\, D.C. The Wind Ensemble has recorded nineteen commercially-available albums which have received widespread praise. \nIn 1985\, the Wind Ensemble performed a series of concerts with Pulitzer Prize-winning composer-conductor Karel Husa. In 1988\, the UNCG Wind Ensemble performed in New Orleans\, Louisiana by invitation of the College Band Directors National Association for the Southern Division convention. On a number of occasions\, the Wind Ensemble has commissioned and premiered works from leading band composers. In November of 1990\, the Wind Ensemble performed for the Southern Division of MENC convention. In February 1994\, the UNCG Wind Ensemble performed for a convention of the CBDNA and NBA in Williamsburg\, Virginia. In March 1999\, the Wind Ensemble performed for the national convention of the American Bandmasters Association in Melbourne\, Florida. In February 2000\, the Wind Ensemble performed for the CBDNA Southern Division Convention hosted at UNCG. In 2006\, the Wind Ensemble performed in The Music Center at Strathmore in Bethesda\, Maryland\, shared a concert with the United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” in Arlington\, Virginia\, and collaborated with Karel Husa\, David Dzubay\, and Carter Pann in the performaces of their music\, including two commissions. In 2009\, the Wind Ensemble performed at the CBDNA National Convention at the University of Texas at Austin and performed additional concerts in Georgia\, Alabama\, Louisiana\, and Texas as part of a week-long tour. The Wind Ensemble performed at the 2011 National Convention of the American Bandmasters Association and the 2013 National Conference of the College Band Directors National Association hosted in Greensboro. Most recently\, the UNCG took a twelve day concert tour through the Czech Republic\, Austria\, and Italy\, the highlight of which was a concert in Prague’s famed Dvořák Hall.

Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n \n   \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nHonduran clarinetist and composer Daniel Garcia began his musical study at the age of 11 at the National Music School of Honduras. He has performed with orchestras in Latin America and the US\, and in 2022 joined North Carolina’s Western Piedmont Symphony as 2nd Clarinet. Daniel\, who is an endorsed artist for Steuer Reeds\, won the 2015 MasterWorks Festival Concerto Competition and made his Carnegie Hall debut in 2021 as First Prize winner of the Golden Classical Music awards. He has won other top prizes in the Charleston International Music Competition\, the BTHVN Wien Competition\, the Valencia Awards Music Competition\, the London Classical Music Competition\, the International Mozart Competition Vienna\, Swiss International Music Competition\, the UNCG Student Artist Competition and the Raleigh Symphony “Rising Star” Competition. \nDaniel’s compositional voice takes a tonal approach\, with melody as the main pillar and it is influenced by modernism and some of the most known composers of the twentieth century. His works have been performed by Susan Hoskins\, Jorge Diez & Ryan Johnson among others. Daniel is currently a Graduate Teaching Assistant and MM Candidate at UNC Greensboro\, where he studies clarinet with Anthony Taylor\, Luke Ellard & Andy Hudson and composition with Alejandro Rutty & Mark Engebretson. He previously earned his BM in Clarinet Performance from the Schwob School of Music in 2022\, where he was a Woodruff Scholar and studied clarinet with Lisa Oberlander and composition with James Ogburn. \n\nThe vibrant UNCG Orchestra program has long been recognized for performance excellence\, adventurous programming\, and high artistic standards. A diversity of offerings allow students the opportunity to perform repertoire for ensembles ranging from the largest cornerstone and contemporary works for full orchestra\, to intimate pieces for chamber orchestra\, to string orchestra. \nStudents in the UNCG Orchestra program are dedicated to the performance\, study and cultivation of orchestral music of the highest quality. He is currently serving as Assistant Professor of Trumpet at UNC Greensboro where he leads the Trumpet Studio\, coaches the Graduate Brass Quintet\, and directs the Trumpet Ensemble. Previously Garrett served on the faculties of St. Olaf College and Gustavus Adolphus College. \nGarrett is a member of the Dallas Brass\, an internationally recognized touring ensemble. Dallas Brass has a legacy of presenting uplifting performances\, which span a wide array of musical styles. In addition to performing shows across the country\, Dallas Brass demonstrates a steadfast commitment to music education by working to inspire students of all ages while on tour. \nOutside of touring with Dallas Brass\, Garrett has performed with the Charlotte Symphony\, Winston-Salem Symphony\, the North Carolina Brass Band\, and the Carolina Brass. He has also appeared as a guest musician with The Phoenix Symphony\, the Tucson Symphony Orchestra\, the New World Symphony\, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra\, and the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. Additionally\, Garrett is an Associate Artist with the Rodney Marsalis Philadelphia Big Brass. A new music advocate\, Garrett has worked with composers to commission new works for trumpet\, presenting newly composed works at International Trumpet Guild Conferences. \nGarrett earned his DMA and MM degrees at Arizona State University\, along with a Certificate in Music Theory Pedagogy. Prior to ASU\, he studied at the prestigious Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music in Singapore and St. Olaf College in Minnesota. She has performed around the world\, headlining at the Newport Jazz Festival\, Melbourne Big Band Festival\, NYC Winter JazzFest\, BRIC JazzFest\, Earshot Jazz Festival\, San Jose Jazz Summerfest\, Jazz Standard\, and Jazz Showcase. Coss has performed as a side musician with Jazz greats and luminaries including Clark Terry\, Billy Kaye\, Maurice Hines\, Rufus Reid\, Louis Hayes\, Gene Perla\, Houston Person\, Claudio Roditi\, Bill Charlap\, Geoffrey Keezer\, Willie Jones III\, Jeremy Pelt\, Darcy James Argue\, the DIVA Jazz Orchestra. \nRoxy has six albums out under her own name\, including her latest release\, Disparate Parts (Outside in Music)\, which was met with critical acclaim. Her fifth album Quintet (Outside in Music)\, received a 4-Star review from Downbeat. The Roxy Coss Quintet\, featuring some of the world’s finest young musicians\, is the first-ever recipient of the Emerging Artist Project\, a four-year grant from the Local 802 Musicians Union. They largely perform Coss’ original compositions. Her composition work can also be found on Jeremy Pelt’s recording\, Face Forward\, Jeremy (High Note). \nCoss grew up in Seattle\, WA where she attended the acclaimed Garfield High School Jazz Ensemble\, and graduated from William Paterson University in 2008 with a BM in Jazz Studies/Performance. She has been living in the New York area since 2004. Roxy currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Jazz Education Network (JEN)\, is Jazz Faculty at The Juilliard School\, and is the President & Founder of Women In Jazz Organization (WIJO). She is also an endorsing Artist for P. Mauriat\, Vandoren\, and Key Leaves products. \n\nThe Miles Davis Jazz Studies Program at UNCG is a unique and innovative undergraduate jazz program designed to emulate the traditional process of learning jazz\, through a combination of mentorship\, real-world playing experiences\, and a communal approach to learning. Performers in the current Wind Ensemble are drawn from sixteen states\, Slovenia\, and Hong Kong. The ensemble has enjoyed a distinguished record of performance throughout its history. In January 1992\, the UNCG Wind Ensemble performed “A Tribute to John Philip Sousa” to a capacity crowd of 2\,700 at the Concert Hall of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington\, D.C. Twice\, the Wind Ensemble earned critical acclaim from The Washington Post following concerts in the nation’s capital. The Wind Ensemble has performed throughout the eastern United States in recent years including the first-ever performance\, in 1987\, by a North Carolina collegiate ensemble in Lincoln Center\, New York City. The Wind Ensemble performed that same year in West Virginia\, Virginia\, Pennsylvania\, and Washington\, D.C. The Wind Ensemble has recorded nineteen commercially-available albums which have received widespread praise. \nIn 1985\, the Wind Ensemble performed a series of concerts with Pulitzer Prize-winning composer-conductor Karel Husa. In 1988\, the UNCG Wind Ensemble performed in New Orleans\, Louisiana by invitation of the College Band Directors National Association for the Southern Division convention. On a number of occasions\, the Wind Ensemble has commissioned and premiered works from leading band composers. In November of 1990\, the Wind Ensemble performed for the Southern Division of MENC convention. In February 1994\, the UNCG Wind Ensemble performed for a convention of the CBDNA and NBA in Williamsburg\, Virginia. In March 1999\, the Wind Ensemble performed for the national convention of the American Bandmasters Association in Melbourne\, Florida. In February 2000\, the Wind Ensemble performed for the CBDNA Southern Division Convention hosted at UNCG. In 2006\, the Wind Ensemble performed in The Music Center at Strathmore in Bethesda\, Maryland\, shared a concert with the United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” in Arlington\, Virginia\, and collaborated with Karel Husa\, David Dzubay\, and Carter Pann in the performaces of their music\, including two commissions. In 2009\, the Wind Ensemble performed at the CBDNA National Convention at the University of Texas at Austin and performed additional concerts in Georgia\, Alabama\, Louisiana\, and Texas as part of a week-long tour. The Wind Ensemble performed at the 2011 National Convention of the American Bandmasters Association and the 2013 National Conference of the College Band Directors National Association hosted in Greensboro. Most recently\, the UNCG took a twelve day concert tour through the Czech Republic\, Austria\, and Italy\, the highlight of which was a concert in Prague’s famed Dvořák Hall.

Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n\n\n\n\n \nDr. Abigail Pack\, Professor of Horn at UNCG\, native of Roanoke\, Virginia\, received her training from East Carolina University (BMA)\, University of Iowa (MM)\, and University of Wisconsin-Madison (DMA) where she was a Bolz Teaching Fellow. Before assuming her current position at UNCG she was Horn Faculty at James Madison University from 2001 to 2008. She has also been on faculty at Knox College in Galesburg\, IL; Western State College in Gunnison\, CO; and taught in the Gunnison Watershed School District. An avid symphony player\, Dr. Pack has held positions with the Barton Symphony Orchestra\, Quad Cities Symphony Orchestra\, Des Moines Symphony Orchestra\, the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra\, and currently performs with the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra\, the Wintergreen Summer Music Festival Orchestra\, the Southwest Chamber Orchestra\, and the Opera Roanoke Orchestra. Other venues have included performances with the Iowa Brass Quintet\, Western Slope Brass Band\, and Massanutten Brass Band. He has been an Artist/Teacher for the Eastern Music Festival since 2013 and served on the faculty of the Hot Springs Music Festival (Arkansas) from 2008–2012. He has formerly held positions with the Spokane Symphony\, the Boise Philharmonic\, Washington State University\, Eastern Washington University\, and Whitman College. Taylor’s clarinet playing can be heard on recordings on the Navona\, Centaur\, Naxos American Classics and Gothic recording labels\, and the most recent releases are two Centaur records projects with New Music Raleigh. The most recent is the world premiere recording of Brett William Dietz’s opera introspective Headcase\, and another recent release is the debut recording of composer DJ Sparr\, 21207. He can also be found on youtube; his video promoting his March 2011 basset clarinet performances of the Mozart concerto with the Winston-Salem symphony now has nearly 100\,000 views. In 2014\, Taylor was among the first performers of Donald Crockett’s Dance Concerto(please see media page for recordings). He has appeared at the International Clarinet Association ClarinetFest®\, with a notable performance of John Adams’s clarinet concerto Gnarly Buttons in 2010 and in 2011\, the world premiere of UNCG composer Alejandro Rutty’s work for Guitars\, for two clarinets and Ableton Live-based electronics. In recent years\, Taylor has been expanding his pedagogical skills through extensive study of human movement and the Alexander Technique\, and expects to complete his ATI certification as a teacher of the Alexander Technique some time during the 2016–17 academic year. Taylor holds degrees from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music\, the Florida State University and Washington State University. Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nThe UNCG Symphony Orchestra is a highly select ensemble of approximately ninety performers majoring in music. Performers include undergraduates through masters and doctoral candidates in music performance and music education. Membership in the organization is highly competitive\, and all students are placed by audition. Members of the Symphony have achieved numerous individual honors including solo competition awards on regional and national levels\, music scholarships\, undergraduate teaching fellowships\, graduate assistantships and fellowships\, and membership in honors ensembles. \nThe UNCG Symphony Orchestra periodically tours the state and region\, and has recently performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington\, DC. A recent review in the Classical Voice of North Carolina described the Orchestra’s performance as\, “dramatic and incisive\,” and “beautifully done.” \nIn addition to the performances of standard orchestral literature\, the Symphony Orchestra often collaborates with the UNCG Choirs to present a major choral/orchestral work. Faculty\, as well as winners of the annual Student Artist Competition\, are often featured as soloists. The Symphony combines with the School of Music Opera Theatre and the UNCG School of Theatre to perform a fully staged opera production each spring semester. Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nSteve Stusek\, saxophone\, is Associate Professor of Music at the University of North Carolina Greensboro\, where he is a member of the Eastwind Quintette d’Anches and the Red Clay Saxophone Quartet. Originally from Oshkosh\, Wisconsin\, he received his Bachelor’s degree in saxophone performance from Indiana University. Before beginning a Master’s degree in saxophone and chamber music at Arizona State University\, Steve spent a year in Paris studying at the Paris Conservatory (Conservatoire Nationale Superior de Musique de Paris) and the Conservatoire de le Région de Paris\, where he was awarded the Prix d’Or à l’Unanimité in Saxophone Performance. After living in the Netherlands for almost eight years he returned to Indiana University and was awarded a DMA in Saxophone in 2001. He has served on the faculties of Ball State University\, Middlebury College\, the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. He has been on the UNCG faculty since 1999. As a soloist\, Steve has appeared with the Eastern Music Festival and more recently with the University of South Carolina Wind Ensemble as part of the North American Saxophone Alliance Biennial conference. He has been the principal saxophonist for the Eastern Music Festival and the Greensboro Symphony for the past ten years. In 2000\, he won the prestigious Dutch Chamber Music Competition as part of the saxophone-accordion duo 2Track with accordion virtuoso Otine van Erp. Together they have performed throughout the Netherlands\, the US and on Dutch radio. Steve teamed up with pianist Inara Zandmane and saxophonist Susan Fancher to produce the critically acclaimed recording Louder than Words – music for two saxophones and piano. Steve’s teachers have included Eugene Rousseau\, Joseph Wytko\, David Baker\, Larry Teal\, Daniel Deffayet\, Jean-Yves Formeau\, and Leroy Wolter. Steve is the Past-President of the North American Saxophone Alliance. \n\nHailed for his “exquisite artistry\,” “stunning interpretations” and “flawless performances\,” New-Zealand-born bassoonist Michael Burns enjoys a multi-faceted career as a performer\, teacher and composer. \nAn active performer\, Burns enjoys roles as a soloist\, in chamber groups\, and orchestrally with numerous recent performances at International Double Reed Society conventions\, recitals and masterclasses throughout North America\, Germany\, Italy\, China and the South Pacific. He performs as principal bassoon with the Asheville Symphony and the North Carolina Opera and as bassoonist in the EastWind Ensemble and Blue Mountain Forecast. He also performs regularly with regional groups such as the Greensboro\, Charlotte\, and North Carolina Symphonies and as a guest with the Ciompi Quartet and Mallarme Chamber Players. \nHe has recorded for the Centaur\, CAP\, Telarc\, EMI\, Klavier\, and Mark labels and his solo CD Primavera: Music for Bassoon and Piano by Bassoonists\, was released to critical acclaim on the Mark Masters label. A new CD Glass Ghosts is scheduled for release in 2020. He performed extensively with the Cincinnati and New Zealand Symphony Orchestras\, the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra\, and he held Principal positions with the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra and the Midland/Odessa\, Richmond\, and Abilene Symphonies. Burns plays on a Moosmann 222CL 5SC Thin Wall bassoon. \nBurns’ primary position is as Professor of bassoon at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. In summers\, he has been associated with several Festivals including the Clazz International Music Festival in Tuscany\, Italy\, Eastern Music Festival\, The Summer Bassoon Extravaganza\, Music for All/Bands of America Summer Symposium\, the Affetti Festival\, New England Music Camp and the Bocal Majority and Operation O.B.O.E. Prior to accepting the position at UNCG\, he also taught at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory\, Indiana State University and Midland College. \nHe is an active composer with many of his pieces being published by TrevCo Music\, Potenza Music and Effiny Music and frequently performed internationally. Additionally\, he has published articles and reviews in the Double Reed (the journal of the International Double Reed Society)\, the TBA Journal (Texas Bandmasters’ Association)\, the NC Music Educator (journal of the NC Music Educators’ Association for which he served as Woodwind Notes Editor for over a decade)\, and Notes (the journal of the Music Library Association). His mentors include William Winstead\, Sherman Walt\, Leonard Sharrow\, Sidney Rosenberg\, and Colin Hemmingsen. Brown\, guest clinican\nAssociate Director of Bands\nUniversity of Maryland\nCollege Park\, Maryland \n\n\n\n\n \nPatricia Cornett is the Director of Bands at the Temple University Boyer College of Music and Dance where she conducts the Wind Symphony and teaches advanced conducting. Prior to joining the faculty at Temple\, she was the Director of Bands at Cal State Fullerton where she conducted the Wind Symphony\, Symphonic Winds\, and taught courses in conducting and music education. She was also a Visiting Assistant Professor at SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music. \nCornett taught at Essex High School in Essex Junction\, Vermont from 2007–2010 where she conducted three concert bands\, jazz band\, and taught courses in guitar and history of rock. She was also the Director of Instrumental Music at Woodland Regional High School in Beacon Falls\, Connecticut\, from 2003–2005. She is published in the Teaching Music Through Performance in Band series\, the CBDNA Journal\, and has presented sessions at national CBDNA conferences\, as well as numerous state conferences. She is a member of the College Band Directors National Association\, the Conductors Guild\, the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association\, and the National Association for Music Education. \n\nDr. Andrea E. Brown was appointed the Associate Director of Bands at the University of Maryland in 2018. In this position she conducts the University of Maryland Wind Ensemble and serves as the Director of Athletic Bands in which she leads the “Mighty Sound of Maryland” and all aspects of the athletic band program. Brown is formerly a member of the conducting faculty at the University of Michigan where she served as the assistant director of bands. In this position\, she was the conductor of the Campus Bands and director of the Campus Band Chamber Ensembles\, associate director of the Michigan Marching and Athletic Bands\, director of the Men’s Basketball Band\, guest conductor with the Symphony Band and Concert Band\, taught conducting\, and was a faculty sponsor of a College of Engineering Multidisciplinary Design Project team researching conducting pedagogy technology. Previously Brown was the director of orchestra and assistant director of bands at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta where she also led research in conducting pedagogy technology and was a member of the Oxford Program faculty. She is a frequent guest conductor\, clinician\, and adjudicator in the US\, Europe\, and Asia. \nBrown completed a DMA in instrumental conducting at UNC Greensboro where she was a student of John Locke and Kevin Geraldi. While at UNCG\, she was named Outstanding Teaching Assistant and was both guest conductor and principal horn on UNCG Wind Ensemble’s fireworks! and finish line! CDs released on the Equilibrium label. Brown has also had several rehearsal guides published in the popular GIA Publications series\, “Teaching Music Through Performance in Band” and has presented at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago\, Music For All Summer Symposium\, the Yamaha Bläserklasse in Schlitz\, Germany\, the International Computer Music Conference in Ljubljana\, Slovenia\, the College Music Society International Conference in Sydney\, Australia\, and multiple times at the College Band Directors National Association National Conference. \nA proponent of inclusion and equity issues in the music profession\, Brown is a frequent guest speaker on these topics. She currently serves on the CBDNA Gender and Ethnic Minority Committee\, and as a member of the recently formed Drum Corps International Women’s In Step Committee. Brown is also the founder of “Women Rising to the Podium” – an online group of 2300 members supporting and celebrating women band directors. She also serves the chair of the Sigma Alpha Iota Women’s Music Fraternity Graduate Conducting Grant. \nBrown currently serves as a brass consultant for Phantom Regiment and Spirit of Atlanta Drum and Bugle Corps. She has been on the brass and conducting instructional staff of the DCI World Champion Phantom Regiment since 2004. Other marching organizations with which she has instructed are the U.S. Army All-American Marching Band\, Carolina Crown\, Kennesaw Mountain High School (GA)\, Father Ryan High School (TN)\, and McGavock High School (TN). \nAs a performer\, Brown was a member of the AA Brass Quintet\, which won the International Brass Quintet Competition hosted by Fred Mills at the University of Georgia. She performed with the horn sections of the Boston Brass All Stars Big Band\, North Carolina Symphony\, Winston-Salem Symphony\, and the Brevard Music Center Orchestra. Brown has studied brass performance and pedagogy with Abigail Pack\, Jack Masarie\, Freddy Martin\, J.D. Shaw\, Dottie Bennett\, Randy Kohlenberg\, Richard Steffen\, and Ed Bach. \nOriginally from Milan\, Tennessee\, she is a graduate of Austin Peay State University where she was named “Outstanding Student in Music.” Brown earned a master of music degree in horn performance and a master of music education degree with a cognate in instrumental conducting from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Prior to her position at Georgia Tech\, Brown was the assistant director of bands at Austin Peay State University and taught public school in Milwaukee\, Wisconsin\, and Dallas\, Texas. She is a member of Phi Kappa Phi\, Pi Kappa Lambda\, and CBDNA. She was awarded the Rose of Honor as a member of Sigma Alpha Iota and is an honorary member of Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma.

Performers in the current Wind Ensemble are drawn from sixteen states\, Slovenia\, and Hong Kong. The ensemble has enjoyed a distinguished record of performance throughout its history. In January 1992\, the UNCG Wind Ensemble performed “A Tribute to John Philip Sousa” to a capacity crowd of 2\,700 at the Concert Hall of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington\, D.C. Twice\, the Wind Ensemble earned critical acclaim from The Washington Post following concerts in the nation’s capital. The Wind Ensemble has performed throughout the eastern United States in recent years including the first-ever performance\, in 1987\, by a North Carolina collegiate ensemble in Lincoln Center\, New York City. The Wind Ensemble performed that same year in West Virginia\, Virginia\, Pennsylvania\, and Washington\, D.C. The Wind Ensemble has recorded nineteen commercially-available albums which have received widespread praise. \nIn 1985\, the Wind Ensemble performed a series of concerts with Pulitzer Prize-winning composer-conductor Karel Husa. In February 2000\, the Wind Ensemble performed for the CBDNA Southern Division Convention hosted at UNCG. In 2006\, the Wind Ensemble performed in The Music Center at Strathmore in Bethesda\, Maryland\, shared a concert with the United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” in Arlington\, Virginia\, and collaborated with Karel Husa\, David Dzubay\, and Carter Pann in the performaces of their music\, including two commissions. In 2009\, the Wind Ensemble performed at the CBDNA National Convention at the University of Texas at Austin and performed additional concerts in Georgia\, Alabama\, Louisiana\, and Texas as part of a week-long tour. An avid performer of contemporary music\, he has taken part in the premiere and commissioning of several pieces for solo clarinet and chamber ensemble. In 2016-2017\, Lucas was a founding member and toured with the Noise to Signal Ensemble\, which premiered works for Reed Quintet and Piano. Lucas was recently a winner of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro’s 2022 Student Artist Competition with John Corigliano’s Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra. He has received multiple performance invitations from conferences of the International Clarinet Association and the College Music Society. The most recent invitation to the ICA conference (Reno\, NV in 2022) involves the commission and premiere of a piece for solo clarinet that features the rare “fluting” technique by Erin Cameron. In addition\, Lucas was a performer for the ICA’s “New Music Weekend” in 2021 and has regularly performed at the Charlotte New Music Festival as part of their “open mic” concerts. Lucas performed at the 2020 Clarinet Maestro Festival and was invited to be the Bass Clarinet Fellow at the (subsequently-cancelled due to COVID) 2020 Brevard Music Center. \nIn addition to his teaching duties as a Doctoral TA for UNC Greensboro’s clarinet studio\, Lucas currently teaches clarinet\, saxophone\, and flute lessons in the Charlotte\, NC area. He has also taught online lessons to students as far as Texas. He has served as band director for multiple middle school programs in Charlotte\, NC and regularly works with various local schools as a woodwind instructor. For several years Lucas has worked at the UNCG Summer Music Camp as both a counselor and private clarinet lessons instructor. \nLucas is currently working on his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at UNC Greensboro\, where he is a Minerva Scholar and also earned his Bachelor’s degrees in Music Education and Performance. Lucas earned his Master of Music degree from Bowling Green State University. His primary teachers have included Anthony Taylor\, Kelly Burke\, Kevin Schempf\, and Andy Hudson. \n\n \nKyrese Washington is a 2022 graduate of UNCG (BM Flute Performance) where they studied with Dr. Erika Boysen and Dr. Tim Hagen. As a soloist\, Kyrese has appeared on many stages\, such as the SECU Auditorium at the Museum of Art with the Community Music School\, and the Meymandi Concert Hall with Pink Martini and the North Carolina Symphony. As an active student at UNCG\, Kyrese has participated in the UNCG Symphonic Band\, Wind Ensemble\, University Symphony Orchestra\, Opera\, and Casella Sinfonietta. Additionally\, Kyrese has been a winner of the Raleigh Area Flute Association Review and Contest consecutively for the past three years. Recently\, Kyrese has been selected as a participant of the National Flute Association Young Artist Mentorship Program. As a result of all of Kyrese’s hard work and dedicating numerous hours into developing their craft\, they have been selected by the UNCG School of Music faculty as the Presser Scholar of the 2021-2022 school year. Currently\, Kyrese is the principal flutist of the Appalachia Wind Symphony and teaches private lessons at Music & Arts stores in Greensboro and Burlington.

A native of North Carolina\, she holds the principal oboe position with the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra in addition to being a frequent performer throughout the southeastern USA. She has appeared as soloist with the Salisbury Symphony\, the Florida State Wind Orchestra\, the UNCG Orchestra\, Symphonic Band\, and Wind Ensemble\, the Pottstown Symphony Orchestra\, and has presented numerous guest recitals and master classes throughout the United States\, Caribbean\, Central America\, Canada\, Germany\, China\, New Zealand and Australia. A chamber music aficionado\, Barret performs regularly with the Cascade Wind Quintet\, the EastWind Trio d’Anches\, the EastWind Ensemble\, and has spent several summers playing chamber music in the Adirondacks of New York. \nSome highlights of her career include co-hosting the International Double Reed Society’s 32nd annual conference in 2003\, a Carnegie-Hall recital debut with the EastWind Trio d’Anches in 2005\, a ten-day recital tour to China with the EastWind Quintette d’Anches in 2008\, and most recently being invited as faculty at the Brevard Music Center for the Summer Festival of 2010. Barret’s degrees include the Doctor of Music from Florida State University\, the Master of Music from Baylor University\, and the Bachelor of Music from the Eastman School of Music. She can be heard on Live from Luzerne recordings with the Luzerne Chamber Players (NY)\, Out of the Woods\, French reed trio music with TreVent\, The Russian Clarinet (with EastWind Trio d’Anches)\, EastWind Trio d’Anches Looks East (Reed Trios of Eastern Europe)\, Chamber Music of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (pub. by Centaur Records). Face coverings that cover the nose and mouth are strongly encouraged\, but not required\, while inside the performance hall.\n\n\n\n \n \nSYNOPSIS\nAct I (Peter’s House) \nAs the curtain rises\, Hansel and Gretel are busy working. They soon become distracted and resort to dancing and playing games. At the height of their frivolity\, their mother (Gertrude) returns and discovers their laziness. In her anger\, she accidentally knocks a pitcher of milk to the floor\, shattering it and spilling its contents. She blames the children and banishes them to the woods to pick strawberries\, after which she collapses in frustration and exhaustion. Her husband and the father of the children (Peter) returns home after an exceptionally successful afternoon of selling the brooms\, which he makes for a living. When he inquires as to the whereabouts of the children\, she tells him of their fate. He is horrified\, since the forest is the dwelling place of the evil Witch who entices children and bakes them into gingerbread cookies. Both parents rush out to rescue them. \nAct II (The Forest) \nAs the children pick strawberries and collect flowers in the forest\, they begin to play games again. Before they realize it\, they devour all the berries they have picked\, and it has grown too dark to collect any more. Hansel confesses that he has lost the way\, and Gretel begins to panic. The Sandman sprinkles sand into their eyes\, causing them to fall into a deep sleep\, during which angels appear and protect them. \nAct III (The Witch’s House) \nThe next morning\, the Dew Fairy wakes the children. They describe to each other a wondrous dream that each had\, after which they discover the Witch’s candy house. When they try to flee\, she casts a spell on them\, locks Hansel in a cage\, and turns her attention to the oven. Gretel speaks the magic words\, freeing Hansel from the spell. When the Witch invites her to look in the oven\, Gretel plays dumb and asks her to show her how. The Witch bends over to demonstrate and Hansel and Gretel push her into the oven\, breaking the spell that has been cast on all of the gingerbread children. Father and Mother appear\, and all rejoice in a hymn of Thanksgiving.

She is committed to listening\, learning\, and becoming a better member of society with the hopes of paving roads for justice\, collaboration\, and kindness in communities. She has performed widely in such settings as the Brancaleoni International Music Festival in Italy\, the Gijón International Piano Festival in Spain\, the Kennedy Center\, Interlochen Arts Academy\, and China. (However\, she sometimes prefers to perform in intimate spaces such as living rooms\, personal Zoom calls\, and breweries.) Recent performances have included Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy with UNCG’s University Symphony Orchestra\, Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G major with the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra\, Messiaen’s La ville d’en haut with the University of Michigan Symphony Band\, and Messiaen’s Oiseaux exotiques with the University of Michigan Contemporary Directions Ensemble. A Presser scholar\, Annie has presented at Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) conferences at collegiate\, state\, and national levels and College Music Society (CMA) regional conferences. \nAnnie’s essential goal as an artist is to make communities richer and more meaningful through the arts. To this end\, Annie strives to make music accessible to audiences of all backgrounds by expanding and rethinking the traditional recital format to include interdisciplinary and interactive elements\, all with the aim of encouraging audiences to engage with the artistic experience. Recent projects include\, “Music by the Barrel\,” which was a concert series at the Ann Arbor Distilling Company in Ann Arbor\, “Beyond the Keys: Unlocking Piano Works” which was an interactive concert on the roof of a parking deck performed by her piano pedagogy students\, and “Brews-keys” which featured UNCG piano faculty and students at Oden Brewing Company in Greensboro\, North Carolina. She also led music workshops that focused on group singing and music as a form of expression through the Prison Creative Arts Project at University of Michigan. \nDuring the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic\, Annie personally picked up and delivered keyboards to UNCG piano students in order to ensure that music within student’s lives would not be stopped. As a strong believer of creating a better and more equitable “normal\,” she also founded A Seat at the Piano (ASAP) in the summer of 2020 (aseatatthepiano.com). ASAP is a resource that is dedicated to the promotion of inclusion in the performance and study of solo piano repertoire. \nMuch of Annie’s research is devoted to contemporary music and studying the pedagogical capabilities of contemporary piano techniques. In 2018\, Annie received the Rackham Predoctoral Fellowship from the University of Michigan to create a pedagogical resource called Circles and Lines that will feature newly commissioned works by female composers that introduce unconventional piano techniques to intermediate pianists. She is also the pianist of Khemia Ensemble (khemiaensemble.com)\, a contemporary chamber ensemble that is dedicated to promoting contemporary classical music by cultivating inclusive place-making\, collaborative mentorships\, and authentic storytelling through immersive\, multimedia performances. She released the album\, “World Map” with Parma Recordings as the former pianist of Four Corner’s Ensemble. Committed to supporting musicians in finding their unique career path\, she also worked as a Programming Assistant at University of Michigan’s Excellence in Entrepreneurship\, Career Empowerment & Leadership (EXCEL) Lab. She also serves as a member of the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy (NCKP) Career Development and Innovation Committee. \nAnnie received her MM in Piano Performance from the University of Michigan and her BM in Piano Performance with a minor in Public Health from New York University. She received her DMA in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Michigan in 2019. Her teachers include Logan Skelton\, José Ramón Mendez\, Miyoko Lotto\, Anne-Marie McDermott\, and Faye Bonner. She is currently the Assistant Professor of Piano and Piano Pedagogy at University of North Carolina at Greensboro. (anniejeng.com) \n\nThe UNCG Wind Ensemble is a highly select concert band of fifty performers majoring in music at the UNCG School of Music. Performers in the current Wind Ensemble are drawn from sixteen states\, Slovenia\, and Hong Kong. The ensemble has enjoyed a distinguished record of performance throughout its history. In January 1992\, the UNCG Wind Ensemble performed “A Tribute to John Philip Sousa” to a capacity crowd of 2\,700 at the Concert Hall of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington\, D.C. Twice\, the Wind Ensemble earned critical acclaim from The Washington Post following concerts in the nation’s capital. The Wind Ensemble has performed throughout the eastern United States in recent years including the first-ever performance\, in 1987\, by a North Carolina collegiate ensemble in Lincoln Center\, New York City. The Wind Ensemble performed that same year in West Virginia\, Virginia\, Pennsylvania\, and Washington\, D.C. The Wind Ensemble has recorded nineteen commercially-available albums which have received widespread praise. \nIn 1985\, the Wind Ensemble performed a series of concerts with Pulitzer Prize-winning composer-conductor Karel Husa. In 1988\, the UNCG Wind Ensemble performed in New Orleans\, Louisiana by invitation of the College Band Directors National Association for the Southern Division convention. On a number of occasions\, the Wind Ensemble has commissioned and premiered works from leading band composers. In November of 1990\, the Wind Ensemble performed for the Southern Division of MENC convention. In February 1994\, the UNCG Wind Ensemble performed for a convention of the CBDNA and NBA in Williamsburg\, Virginia. In March 1999\, the Wind Ensemble performed for the national convention of the American Bandmasters Association in Melbourne\, Florida. In February 2000\, the Wind Ensemble performed for the CBDNA Southern Division Convention hosted at UNCG. In 2006\, the Wind Ensemble performed in The Music Center at Strathmore in Bethesda\, Maryland\, shared a concert with the United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” in Arlington\, Virginia\, and collaborated with Karel Husa\, David Dzubay\, and Carter Pann in the performaces of their music\, including two commissions. In 2009\, the Wind Ensemble performed at the CBDNA National Convention at the University of Texas at Austin and performed additional concerts in Georgia\, Alabama\, Louisiana\, and Texas as part of a week-long tour. The Wind Ensemble performed at the 2011 National Convention of the American Bandmasters Association and the 2013 National Conference of the College Band Directors National Association hosted in Greensboro. Most recently\, the UNCG took a twelve day concert tour through the Czech Republic\, Austria\, and Italy\, the highlight of which was a concert in Prague’s famed Dvořák Hall.

He is currently serving as Assistant Professor of Trumpet at UNC Greensboro where he leads the Trumpet Studio\, coaches the Graduate Brass Quintet\, and directs the Trumpet Ensemble. Previously Garrett served on the faculties of St. Olaf College and Gustavus Adolphus College. \nGarrett is a member of the Dallas Brass\, an internationally recognized touring ensemble. Dallas Brass has a legacy of presenting uplifting performances\, which span a wide array of musical styles. In addition to performing shows across the country\, Dallas Brass demonstrates a steadfast commitment to music education by working to inspire students of all ages while on tour. \nOutside of touring with Dallas Brass\, Garrett has performed with the Charlotte Symphony\, Winston-Salem Symphony\, the North Carolina Brass Band\, and the Carolina Brass. He has also appeared as a guest musician with The Phoenix Symphony\, the Tucson Symphony Orchestra\, the New World Symphony\, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra\, and the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. Additionally\, Garrett is an Associate Artist with the Rodney Marsalis Philadelphia Big Brass. A new music advocate\, Garrett has worked with composers to commission new works for trumpet\, presenting newly composed works at International Trumpet Guild Conferences. \nGarrett earned his DMA and MM degrees at Arizona State University\, along with a Certificate in Music Theory Pedagogy. Prior to ASU\, he studied at the prestigious Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music in Singapore and St. Olaf College in Minnesota. Face coverings that cover the nose and mouth are strongly encouraged\, but not required\, while inside the performance hall.\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nDr. Erika Boysen is an international performer\, educator and collaborator who is the Assistant Professor of Flute at the University of North Carolina Greensboro.  Known for her verve and energy while teaching\, Erika has previously served as faculty at the Interlochen Arts Academy and Interlochen Arts Camp\, Northwestern Michigan College and Ann Arbor School for the Performing Arts. \nCommitted to developing new and innovative ways of presenting and teaching the traditional model of classical flute\, the majority of her research and scholarship focuses on cross-disciplinary collaboration between the arts.  Through movement\, singing and acting\, she promotes an approach to education and performance that highlights multiple aspects of artistic expression. \nIn demand as a clinician and speaker\, she has been a featured artist at the Montana Flute Festival\, Eastern Carolina Flute Symposium and Iowa Flute Festival.  In addition\, she has published articles in Flute Talk Magazine and Physics Education Journal and presented at the North Carolina Music Educators Association Conference and Wild Acres Flute Retreat. \nErika has toured across the United States and Europe performing in a variety of chamber\, orchestral and improvisation-based ensembles.  Currently\, as a member of the UNCG East Wind Quintet\, Seen/Heard Trio and COLLAPSS Ensemble (Collective for Happy Sounds)\, she is dedicated to championing music of living composers. Erika has received orchestral fellowships from the Aspen Music Festival\, Texas Music Festival and Brevard Music Festival having worked with conductors: Christian Arming\, David Robertson\, Esa-Pekka Salonen\, Robert Spano and Hugh Wolff. These orchestral and chamber pursuits are complemented by her appearances at ArtX Detroit\, Meadowbrook\, and Culture Lab Festivals as a part of Shara Nova’s indie rock/alternative pop band\, My Brightest Diamond. \nHer first solo debut album\, Reimagining the Album\, will be released via an online application featuring newly commissioned works for the singing/moving flutist by composers: David Biedenbender\, Mark Engebretson\, Jane Rigler and Sam L. Face coverings that cover the nose and mouth are strongly encouraged\, but not required\, while inside the performance hall.\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\nIsraeli conductor Rotem Weinberg is known for his profound musicality\, creative programming\, and polished performances. He is a cross-genre musician\, at home in classical\, operatic\, and pops repertoires alike. In the fall of 2022 he will assume the position of Visiting Assistant Professor of Conducting and Director of Orchestras at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro\, where he will conduct orchestras\, opera\, and teach conducting. \nRotem began his conducting studies at the age of seventeen\, under the guidance of Vag Papian. Before starting his academic studies\, he served in the Israel Defense Forces military band as head librarian and assistant conductor. He earned a BM in orchestral conducting from the Buchmann-Mehta School of Music of Tel-Aviv University\, where he studied with Prof. Yoav Talmi\, Yi-an Xu\, and Ronen Borshevsky. His graduate studies took him to The University of Michigan\, where he earned both MM and DMA degrees in orchestral conducting\, studying with the renowned conductor and pedagogue Kenneth Kiesler. \nAt the University of Michigan\, Rotem served as Music Director of the Campus Symphony Orchestra and the Michigan Pops Orchestra\, bringing these ensembles to new musical heights. He also filled the role of assistant conductor to the prestigious orchestra program\, supporting the work of four student orchestras. As cover conductor of the University of Michigan Opera Theater\, he conducted operas such as Puccini’s La bohème\, Handel’s Alcina\, and William Bolcom’s Dinner at Eight. In February 2018 he served as the first assistant conductor for the ground-breaking test performance of Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess’ new critical edition. Following his studies\, Rotem served as Music Director of Spectrum Orchestra in Birmingham\, Michigan\, Associate Conductor of the Michigan Youth Symphony Orchestra\, and Cover Conductor for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. \nRotem participated in workshops and masterclasses with world renowned orchestral conductors\, including Simon Rattle\, Zubin Mehta\, Zsolt Nagy and Christopher Lyndon Gee. He participated in additional conducting workshops with Joseph Missal\, Felix Hauswirth\, and Laszlo Marosi. \nIn his native Israel\, Rotem led several orchestral\, wind\, and vocal ensembles\, achieving national acclaim as a conductor and educator. He received frequent honors and awards for his conducting and musicianship\, including the America-Israel Cultural Foundation Excellence Grant in orchestral conducting\, the Buchmann-Mehta School of Music Excellence Scholarship\, and the Tel Aviv University Dean of Arts Excellence Award for his outstanding musical and academic achievements. \nAn advocate of contemporary music\, Rotem has collaborated and premiered work by composers Nina Shekhar\, Natalie Moller\, Tyler Arnold\, Sawyer Denton\, and Samuel Sussman.
