Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n \n   \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nThe UNCG Symphony Orchestra is a highly select ensemble of approximately ninety performers majoring in music. Performers include undergraduates through masters and doctoral candidates in music performance and music education. Membership in the organization is highly competitive\, and all students are placed by audition. Members of the Symphony have achieved numerous individual honors including solo competition awards on regional and national levels\, music scholarships\, undergraduate teaching fellowships\, graduate assistantships and fellowships\, and membership in honors ensembles. \nThe UNCG Symphony Orchestra periodically tours the state and region\, and has performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington\, DC. A recent review in the Classical Voice of North Carolina described the Orchestra’s performance as\, “dramatic and incisive\,” and “beautifully done.” \nIn addition to the performances of standard orchestral literature\, the Symphony Orchestra collaborates annually with the UNCG choirs to present a major choral/orchestral work. Faculty\, as well as winners of the annual Student Artist Competition\, are often featured as soloists. The Symphony combines with the School of Music Opera Theatre and the UNCG School of Theatre to perform a fully staged opera production each spring semester. String performers who are not majoring in music are especially encouraged to participate. \n\nThe vibrant UNCG Orchestra program has long been recognized for performance excellence\, adventurous programming\, and high artistic standards. A diversity of offerings allow students the opportunity to perform repertoire for ensembles ranging from the largest cornerstone and contemporary works for full orchestra\, to intimate pieces for chamber orchestra\, to string orchestra. \nStudents in the UNCG Orchestra program are dedicated to the performance\, study and cultivation of orchestral music of the highest quality. The UNCG Orchestras offer outstanding performances throughout the year and enhance the institutional spirit and community of UNCG. We seek to promote music education in the state of North Carolina and in our region by supporting secondary school orchestra programs and other organizations through our outreach activities and other annual events on campus.

Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n \n   \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nThe popular “Harvest Home” concert\, which is free and open to the public\, celebrates the themes of bounty\, harvest\, family\, and community\, and will feature singers from a variety of campus ensembles. \nThe Gothic Revival First Presbyterian Church is crafted largely from brick and stone to create what author Gerald Allen called “a loose interpretation of the cathedral at Albi in southern France.” New York architect Hobart Upjohn\, principal designer\, collaborated with architect Harry Barton. Barton designed many UNCG campus buildings\, such as UNCG Auditorium and Brown (Music) Building. \n\nThe mission of the UNCG Choirs is dedicated to the teaching\, performance\, study and cultivation of choral music of the highest quality representing not just the western choral canon but also choral music of other cultures by a diverse body of historical and new composers. The PopTech program is at the forefront of initiatives across the country that welcome young musicians to university music studies from fields like hip-hop\, rap\, R&B\, pop\, rock\, film/video/gaming music\, and more. IV and V (consortium premiere) \n  \n \n\nThe importance of philanthropy has never been greater. Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n   \n\n\n\n\n \nViolist Scott Rawls has appeared as soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States\, Canada\, Mexico\, Japan\, and Europe.  Recent chamber music endeavors include performances with Dmitry Sitkovetsky\, Bill Preucil\, Kurt Nikkanen\, Paul Rosenthal\, Jinjoo Cho\, Zuill Bailey\, and Sergey Antonov.  Last season\, he was a featured artist at chamber festivals ranging from Sitka Summer Chamber Music Festival and El Paso Pro Musica to Northwest Bach Festival.  His solo and chamber music recordings can be heard on the Centaur\, CRI\, Nonesuch\, Capstone\, and Philips labels. \nA strong proponent of new music\, Rawls has premiered dozens of new works by prominent composers.  Most notable\, he has toured extensively as a member of Steve Reich and Musicians.  As the violist in this ensemble\, he performed the numerous premieres of Daniel Variations\, The Cave and Three Tales by Steve Reich and Beryl Korot\, videographer. And under the auspices of presenting organizations such as the Wiener Festwochen\, Festival d’Automne a Paris\, Holland Festival\, Berlin Festival\, Spoleto Festival USA and the Lincoln Center Festival\, he has performed in major music centers around the world including London\, Vienna\, Rome\, Milan\, Tokyo\, Prague\, Amsterdam\, Brussels\, Los Angeles\, Chicago and New York. \nUnder the baton of maestro Dmitry Sitkovetsky\, he plays principal viola in the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra.  And during the summers\, Rawls plays principal viola in the festival orchestra at Brevard Music Center where he also coordinates the viola program. \nDr. Rawls currently serves as Professor of Viola and Chamber Music at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He holds a BM degree from Indiana University and a MM and DMA from State University of New York at Stony Brook. His major mentors include Abraham Skernick\, Georges Janzer\, John Graham and Julius Levine. \n\nThe UNCG Wind Ensemble is a highly select concert band of fifty performers majoring in music at the UNCG School of Music. Performers in the current Wind Ensemble are drawn from sixteen states\, Slovenia\, and Hong Kong. The ensemble has enjoyed a distinguished record of performance throughout its history. In January 1992\, the UNCG Wind Ensemble performed “A Tribute to John Philip Sousa” to a capacity crowd of 2\,700 at the Concert Hall of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington\, D.C. Twice\, the Wind Ensemble earned critical acclaim from The Washington Post following concerts in the nation’s capital. The Wind Ensemble has performed throughout the eastern United States in recent years including the first-ever performance\, in 1987\, by a North Carolina collegiate ensemble in Lincoln Center\, New York City. The Wind Ensemble performed that same year in West Virginia\, Virginia\, Pennsylvania\, and Washington\, D.C. The Wind Ensemble has recorded nineteen commercially-available albums which have received widespread praise. \nIn 1985\, the Wind Ensemble performed a series of concerts with Pulitzer Prize-winning composer-conductor Karel Husa. In 1988\, the UNCG Wind Ensemble performed in New Orleans\, Louisiana by invitation of the College Band Directors National Association for the Southern Division convention. On a number of occasions\, the Wind Ensemble has commissioned and premiered works from leading band composers. In November of 1990\, the Wind Ensemble performed for the Southern Division of MENC convention. In February 1994\, the UNCG Wind Ensemble performed for a convention of the CBDNA and NBA in Williamsburg\, Virginia. In March 1999\, the Wind Ensemble performed for the national convention of the American Bandmasters Association in Melbourne\, Florida. In February 2000\, the Wind Ensemble performed for the CBDNA Southern Division Convention hosted at UNCG. In 2006\, the Wind Ensemble performed in The Music Center at Strathmore in Bethesda\, Maryland\, shared a concert with the United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” in Arlington\, Virginia\, and collaborated with Karel Husa\, David Dzubay\, and Carter Pann in the performaces of their music\, including two commissions. In 2009\, the Wind Ensemble performed at the CBDNA National Convention at the University of Texas at Austin and performed additional concerts in Georgia\, Alabama\, Louisiana\, and Texas as part of a week-long tour. The Wind Ensemble performed at the 2011 National Convention of the American Bandmasters Association and the 2013 National Conference of the College Band Directors National Association hosted in Greensboro. Most recently\, the UNCG took a twelve day concert tour through the Czech Republic\, Austria\, and Italy\, the highlight of which was a concert in Prague’s famed Dvořák Hall.

Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n \n   \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \nViolist Scott Rawls has appeared as soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States\, Canada\, Mexico\, Japan\, and Europe.  Recent chamber music endeavors include performances with Dmitry Sitkovetsky\, Bill Preucil\, Kurt Nikkanen\, Paul Rosenthal\, Jinjoo Cho\, Zuill Bailey\, and Sergey Antonov.  Last season\, he was a featured artist at chamber festivals ranging from Sitka Summer Chamber Music Festival and El Paso Pro Musica to Northwest Bach Festival.  His solo and chamber music recordings can be heard on the Centaur\, CRI\, Nonesuch\, Capstone\, and Philips labels. \nA strong proponent of new music\, Rawls has premiered dozens of new works by prominent composers.  Most notable\, he has toured extensively as a member of Steve Reich and Musicians.  As the violist in this ensemble\, he performed the numerous premieres of Daniel Variations\, The Cave and Three Tales by Steve Reich and Beryl Korot\, videographer. And under the auspices of presenting organizations such as the Wiener Festwochen\, Festival d’Automne a Paris\, Holland Festival\, Berlin Festival\, Spoleto Festival USA and the Lincoln Center Festival\, he has performed in major music centers around the world including London\, Vienna\, Rome\, Milan\, Tokyo\, Prague\, Amsterdam\, Brussels\, Los Angeles\, Chicago and New York. \nUnder the baton of maestro Dmitry Sitkovetsky\, he plays principal viola in the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra.  And during the summers\, Rawls plays principal viola in the festival orchestra at Brevard Music Center where he also coordinates the viola program. \nDr. Rawls currently serves as Professor of Viola and Chamber Music at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He holds a BM degree from Indiana University and a MM and DMA from State University of New York at Stony Brook. His major mentors include Abraham Skernick\, Georges Janzer\, John Graham and Julius Levine. \n\nThe UNCG Wind Ensemble is a highly select concert band of fifty performers majoring in music at the UNCG School of Music. Performers in the current Wind Ensemble are drawn from sixteen states\, Slovenia\, and Hong Kong. The ensemble has enjoyed a distinguished record of performance throughout its history. In January 1992\, the UNCG Wind Ensemble performed “A Tribute to John Philip Sousa” to a capacity crowd of 2\,700 at the Concert Hall of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington\, D.C. Twice\, the Wind Ensemble earned critical acclaim from The Washington Post following concerts in the nation’s capital. The Wind Ensemble has performed throughout the eastern United States in recent years including the first-ever performance\, in 1987\, by a North Carolina collegiate ensemble in Lincoln Center\, New York City. The Wind Ensemble performed that same year in West Virginia\, Virginia\, Pennsylvania\, and Washington\, D.C. The Wind Ensemble has recorded nineteen commercially-available albums which have received widespread praise. \nIn 1985\, the Wind Ensemble performed a series of concerts with Pulitzer Prize-winning composer-conductor Karel Husa. In 1988\, the UNCG Wind Ensemble performed in New Orleans\, Louisiana by invitation of the College Band Directors National Association for the Southern Division convention. On a number of occasions\, the Wind Ensemble has commissioned and premiered works from leading band composers. In November of 1990\, the Wind Ensemble performed for the Southern Division of MENC convention. In February 1994\, the UNCG Wind Ensemble performed for a convention of the CBDNA and NBA in Williamsburg\, Virginia. In March 1999\, the Wind Ensemble performed for the national convention of the American Bandmasters Association in Melbourne\, Florida. In February 2000\, the Wind Ensemble performed for the CBDNA Southern Division Convention hosted at UNCG. In 2006\, the Wind Ensemble performed in The Music Center at Strathmore in Bethesda\, Maryland\, shared a concert with the United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” in Arlington\, Virginia\, and collaborated with Karel Husa\, David Dzubay\, and Carter Pann in the performaces of their music\, including two commissions. In 2009\, the Wind Ensemble performed at the CBDNA National Convention at the University of Texas at Austin and performed additional concerts in Georgia\, Alabama\, Louisiana\, and Texas as part of a week-long tour. The Wind Ensemble performed at the 2011 National Convention of the American Bandmasters Association and the 2013 National Conference of the College Band Directors National Association hosted in Greensboro. Most recently\, the UNCG took a twelve day concert tour through the Czech Republic\, Austria\, and Italy\, the highlight of which was a concert in Prague’s famed Dvořák Hall.

UNCG’s Miles Davis Jazz Studies Program celebrates this watershed year with saxophonist Rahsaan Barber joining Jazz Ensemble II for a diverse program of music by Thad Jones\, Dexter Gordon\, Wes Montgomery\, Tito Puente\, Milt Jackson\, Sam Rivers\, and many more. \n\nSince earning a Master’s Degree in Jazz Performance from the Manhattan School of Music in 2005\, Rahsaan Barber (Assistant Professor\, UNC Chapel Hill) has set out on a singular path of musical excellence in performance\, composition\, education\, and entrepreneurship. Rahsaan enjoys a career that encompasses an ever-expanding range of musical styles\, including jazz\, blues\, funk\, classical\, fusion\, soul\, Latin\, and world music. \nRahsaan’s passionate\, sincere\, and studious approach to music-making has garnered professional appearances onstage alongside such heavyweights as Christian McBride\, Brian Blade\, the Temptations\, Delfeayo Marsalis\, the Spanish Harlem Orchestra\, Duffy Jackson\, Winard Harper\, Kirk Franklin\, Meghan Trainor and the Wooten Brothers. The saxophonist has performed on many of the world’s most prestigious stages for music including The Ryman\, The Village Vanguard\, Birdland\, Lincoln Center\, the Kennedy Center\, the Montreux Jazz Festival\, and the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. Rahsaan joined the ranks of the nation’s rising jazz stars as the leader of his own quintet\, Everyday Magic\, and co-leader of the groundbreaking Nashville-based Latin-jazz septet El Movimiento. Rahsaan has entered the ranks of the nation’s premier jazz artists following several celebrated releases\, most recently including “Mosaic\,” a double-disc collection of original works released in April of 2021\, featuring trumpeter Nathan Warner and trombonist Roland Barber\, Rahsaan’s twin brother. Prior to the release of “Mosaic\,” Barber received critical acclaim for “The Music In The Night” (2017) and “Everyday Magic\,” (2011) both released on the saxophonist’s record label\, Jazz Music City\, which he founded to showcase his hometown’s (Nashville\, TN) diverse and impressive musical talent. In addition to his own jazz outfits\, the saxophonist founded The Nashville Salsa Machine in 2016\, a twelve-member ensemble featuring Music City’s most celebrated Latin-music performers. Barber is also an in-demand saxophonist for recording sessions and touring work\, most recently completing a year-long tour with pop icon Kelly Clarkson and multiple tours with Lauren Daigle. \nRahsaan currently serves as Assistant Professor of Jazz Studies and Saxophone at the University of North Carolina. Barber has taught extensively at the collegiate level for over a decade\, including six years of instruction at Belmont University\, where he began his collegiate teaching career as instructor jazz and classical saxophone\, jazz ensembles\, and commercial music styles at the impressive age of twenty-five. Barber has given masterclasses and concerts at multiple Jazz Education Network conferences and at numerous colleges and universities\, including the University of Tennessee at Knoxville\, the University of Memphis\, Lipscomb University\, UNC-Pembroke\, UNC-Wilmington\, Indiana University\, The University of Wisconsin (OshKosh)\, the University of Evansville\, and many more. In addition\, Rahsaan has served as Vice-President of the Tennessee Jazz and Blues Society and as a board member for the Nashville Jazz Workshop’s Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion panel. \n\nThe Miles Davis Jazz Studies Program at UNCG is a unique and innovative undergraduate jazz program designed to emulate the traditional process of learning jazz\, through a combination of mentorship\, real-world playing experiences\, and a communal approach to learning. Faculty members Steve Haines (bass)\, Thomas Heflin (trumpet)\, and Chad Eby (saxophone) mentor a rotating cast of students in bandleading\, arranging\, and rehearsal technique\, while focusing on specific jazz artists for each semester. Overflow parking is available in the Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home parking lot but not if the funeral home has a service scheduled (signs will be posted). If you have no mobility issues\, please use the outer lots. \n\n\nAudiences and Tickets\nAll family and friends are welcome to attend the ceremony.
