Willie Clark, tuba • Guest Artist Recital

Willie Clark is lecturer of tuba at the University of Maryland School of Music where he teaches applied tuba lessons, coaches brass chamber groups and serves as the director of the UMD Brass Ensemble. Clark is also currently a member of the United States Air Force “Ceremonial Brass” in Washington, D.C., and was a founding member of the Barclay Brass and professional Disney tuba quartet, “The Tubafours.”

The Red Clay Saxophone Quartet, comprised of UNCG faculty Steve Stusek and Mark Engebretson, along with Susan Fancher and new member Laurent Estoppey, premiere a new work (Hedera) written for them by James Paul Sain, professor at the University of Florida. Other works on the program include Chen Yi's "Not Alone," David Maslanka's, "The soul is here for its own joy" from Recitation Book, and three pieces from Guillermo Lago's "Ciudades."

Present~Continuous New Music Ensemble | Mara Gibson, guest composer

Present~Continuous provides advanced performers with the opportunity of performing significant works of the new music repertoire, in addition to music of visiting composers and members of the UNCG community. Present~Continuous performs at the UNCG New Music Festival, and other venues including tours to universities in South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee. The group’s repertoire has included works by George Crumb, Olivier Messiaen, Steve Reich, David Lang, Robert Paterson, Zhou Long, Julia Wolfe, Anna Clyne, and others.

The instrumentation of the ensemble varies according to the program, ranging from 4 to 18 performers.
