North Carolina Summer Rep is one of the newest additions to the recently formed College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA) at UNCG. North Carolina Summer Rep is a non-curricular theatre opportunity for current students, recent graduates, alumni, industry professionals, and the community at large. This program exists to provide a stepping-stone for current students, alumni, and community members into the professional world by providing meaningful connections and opportunities for all involved.  We will strive to continue bringing professionals to the Triad, and have them share their talents, knowledge, and expertise with our company members, and with the community.

North Carolina Summer Rep produces professional quality Musical Theatre, and specifically prides itself on producing “Staged Concert Versions” of large-scale works rather than “Fully Realized” productions.  It is through these concert productions that we are able to provide dynamic performing opportunities for not only our local and student actors, but also for our local and student musicians.  These productions typically boast orchestras of 20+ members placed prominently on-stage with the cast to create a fully integrated musical and theatrical experience.  Here the emphasis is firmly placed on music and story rather than on the bells and whistles that come with a fully realized production.  We are excited to be providing the community with a new type of musical and theatrical programming yet to be offered; right here in our own back yard.

North Carolina Summer Rep is committed to providing a unique 360-degree educational experience.  We believe strongly that no one in this industry is ever truly finished with learning.  The college student with no performing experience beyond High School theatre has plenty to learn from the professional who’s been in numerous Broadway shows, and the Broadway professional has just as much to learn from the community member who likes to perform for fun.  In this environment, we are offering an enriching educational experience for every single person involved, no matter where they are in their personal or professional development.

What the Community is Saying:

“If its inaugural season is any indication, North Carolina Summer Rep will be a stunning showcase that will bring in audiences from miles around.”

– Lynn Jessup, Review: Greensboro News and Record

“This event was a gift to the senses. The talented actors, ensemble, and orchestra demonstrated the many gifts UNC-Greensboro students offer to the city.  At times, close to 60 performers were on stage.  Thank you for an exhilarating gift to Greensboro.”

– Laura Hunt, Letter to the Editor: Greensboro News and Record

“The wonderful connection between professional talent and UNCG students and alumni resulted in a gripping performance…”

– Jessica Clifford, Review: The Carolinian

“…an indisputable indication of the immense talent that UNCG has produced and continues to train…”

– Lynn Jessup, Review: Greensboro News and Record

What the Students, Alums, and Professionals are Saying:

Farah Alvin: 5 Broadway Shows, Drama Desk Award Winner

“This was a once in a lifetime experience.  The talent at UNCG is astounding, and this program is so beneficial to the student’s success in this industry…every University should be offering this type of opportunity for its students.”

Farah Alvin
Taylor Murphy Hale: 2016 UNCG MFA Acting Alum

“An absolutely fantastic experience…I made great contacts with other professionals in the business and was able to speak to current students about my path and made some solid connections…I was a very proud alum during this process”
Aaron Phillips: 2005 UNCG School of Music Alum

“The opportunity to come home and perform at my alma mater in this way was in a word…special.  As a former student, I can speak to the inherent difficulties that exist in preparing students for the real world…this program does exactly that!  I only wish this existed when I was a student.”
Victoria Pittman: BFA Acting Student at UNCG – Class of 2017

“Having just graduated from UNCG, North Carolina Summer Rep was exactly what I needed to help jumpstart my professional career.  I learned the tools while at school, but this program helped me actually put them into action!”
J. Scott Lapp: Broadway Director, Artistic Director of a Professional Theatre

“The students and community members were unbelievably talented.  I work with professionals in NYC and California every day; these actors and musicians absolutely measure up.  If any of them walked into my NYC audition room I would not only remember them, but I’d go out of my way to try and find a place for them.”
J. Scott Lapp
Anna Weatherwax: Current BFA Acting Student at UNCG

“All of the things I learned throughout this process I could have never learned in a classroom.  I can’t explain how much I benefited from this…I feel like I already have my foot in the NYC professional world before I’ve even graduated.  Rather than just thinking I could do this as a career, now I know I can.”
Anna Weatherwax
