This is a joint effort between the Jazz Studies department at UNCG and the Center for New North Carolinians. The Jazz at Ashton Woods music program joins teenagers from refugee community centers with jazz musicians from UNCG for lessons on musical instruments and jazz band rehearsals. These young musicians, ages 13-17, are primarily from Sudan and the Congo. Jazz, since it’s beginning, has been a music form that relies on diversity and inclusion. We believe that jazz, with its democratic and egalitarian nature, is a wonderful way to welcome new Americans to Greensboro.
