About Focus

Each UNCG Focus on Piano Literature creates a diverse community of music teachers, performing musicians, music students, members of keyboard faculties, scholars in music and the humanities, and avid listeners interested in the piano repertoire. At Focus, the creative energies of artistic and scholarly presenters kindle the enthusiasm of music lovers from near and far, generating a concentrated experience of the classical repertoire of the piano that uplifts the spirit of all participants.

Founded in 1990 by keyboard professor John Salmon and directed since 2003 by professor Andrew Willis, each Focus addresses either an individual composer like Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, or Debussy or a thematic area such as "Russian Romantics" or "Paris in the 1920s." Among the many distinguished guests Focus has brought to UNC Greensboro are pianists Abbey Simon, Jerome Lowenthal, Ann Schein, and Malcolm Bilson, and scholars Christoph Wolff, Jeffrey Kallberg, and R. Larry Todd.

Conservatory-quality performance training by internationally recognized faculty helps our students master their art, while an extensive network supports our students and connects them to opportunities in the profession. Because we believe the pursuit of mastery should embrace a liberal arts education, our students experience a unique balance of rigorous academics and real-world application that helps them develop into scholar-artists prepared for a professional career. Instilling dedication to craft and focusing eagerness to contribute to others through art, the College of Visual and Performing Arts enables our graduates to pursue their passion for a lifetime.
