SUMMARY:Crossing the Coulee
DESCRIPTION:Kate Gordon’s studio practice focuses on painting in the expanded field\, sourcing inspiration from pop-up books\, dioramas\, and collage. The dream imagery that Gordon mines aims to capture the strangeness of the waking world\, which is often not as logical as it might at first appear. Gordon has shown her paintings\, collages\, and video works nationally; exhibitions include a site-specific installation “Alligator Naps” at the Hilliard Art Museum\, curation into the Weatherspoon Art Museum’s “Art on Paper” exhibition\, and an invitation to create a public video installation at Block 2\, a visual platform for new media artists in Raleigh\, NC. Most recent professional accomplishments include participation in Kolaj Institute’s Artist Residency in Scotland\, curation into “Is This Too Much?”\, a maximalist exhibition at Le Mieux Galleries\, and inclusion in the “Louisiana Contemporary” exhibition at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art. Gordon currently holds the position of Associate Professor of Figure Drawing & Foundations at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. She earned an M.F.A. from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a B.F.A. from Pratt Institute. \n\n\n\nExhibition runs October 16 – December 5\, 2025 Monday – Friday\, 8am – 4pmArtist Talk and Reception October 16\, 4:30pm

Pure magical mayhem. In Rough Magic\, characters from The Tempest are hurled into modern-day Manhattan in a high-stakes\, spell-slinging adventure where the fate of the city hangs in the balance. The villain? Prospero—an exiled sorcerer hellbent on reclaiming his stolen book of magic\, even if it means unleashing chaos and destroying the city. Standing in his way? A hilariously mismatched band of heroes: Melanie Porter\, a sharp-tongued dramaturg who can pull characters out of plays; Caliban\, Prospero’s muscle-bound (and slightly clueless) son; Tisiphone\, a vengeful Fury with a flair for the dramatic; and Chet Baxter\, a teenage lifeguard with more guts than sense. Think Harry Potter meets the X-Men\, with a dash of Shakespearean swagger. The magic is real. The danger is epic. And the drama? Off the charts.

SUMMARY:A Preliminary Canon of Pinball Music (in a Post-Canonic World)
DESCRIPTION:Irna Priore Music and Culture Lecture Series\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Neil Lerner J. Estes Millner Professor of Music Chair of Film\, Media\, and Digital Studies Davidson College  \n\n\n\nFor roughly two decades\, scholars have been researching\, writing\, discussing\, and teaching about music in video games. A recent RILM search for the phrase “video game” yielded nearly 1200 hits\, but a search for “pinball” brings a mere 12\, only one of which is an essay focusing on music in pinball machines. Pinball music is then an almost entirely unstudied phenomenon\, despite the foundational role pinball played as an industry for the emergence of the video game industry in the 1970s. Amidst this torrent of dissertations\, journal articles\, monographs\, and essay collections about video game music\, the still-young field has recently and usefully questioned the utility and drawbacks of the canon of video game music that has emerged.  \n\n\n\nA preliminary canon of pinball music risks repeating some of a canon’s elitist and exclusionary impacts; yet for such an unknown and unstudied topic\, a canon may provide benefits by offering potentially illuminating exemplars. Karen Cook’s recent 2020 questioning of video game music canons poses five categories by which a ludomusicological canon might be configured: through a focus on composers\, particular musical works\, consoles/systems\, eras\, and technological capabilities/constraints. Using that framework\, together with research grounded in archival materials from pinball companies\, patent records\, industry periodicals\, as well as composer interviews and recordings of the games themselves\, this presentation will propose a preliminary canon by providing a brief historical overview of sound and music in pinball machines\, and then will focus on some of the most aesthetically and thematically innovative game soundtracks. In so doing\, this talk will bring recognition and attention to the work of groundbreaking composers such as Suzanne Ciani\, Brian Schmidt\, Chris Granner\, and Dave Zabriskie.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Details\n\n\n\n\nPriore Music and Culture Lecture Series\n\n\n\n\n\nParking\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe importance of philanthropy has never been greater.
