SUMMARY:not Just Black and White Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Not Just Black and White\n\n\n\nAn Exploration of Rural Alternative Black Culture \n\n\n\nSolo Student Exhibition by Jalen M.M. Williams\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFebruary 4 -8 \, 2025\n\n\n\n Reception: Friday\, February 7th | 6-8p\n\n\n\nMore About Not Just Black and White \n\n\n\nNot Just Black and White is a powerful collection of prints\, illustrations\, and sculptures that delve into the experiences of an alternative Black person traversing the complexities of growing up in the rural Carolinas. This exhibition reflects a journey through identity\, spirituality\, and resilience in the face of adversity and prejudice. It captures the layered and nuanced nature of Black identity\, particularly in spaces that may feel disconnected from mainstream narratives. \n\n\n\nThe works in this exhibition serve as intimate depictions of the adolescence of Jalen Williams\, where he confronted the challenges of being an outsider within both his community and the broader cultural landscape. Through deliberate mark-making\, concentrated etching\, and the precision of sculpture\, Williams aims to communicate the deep emotional and psychological impact of these experiences. Each piece is an exploration of the contradictions and harmonies that have shaped him—of familial interactions\, struggles for self-definition\, and the strength of counterculture. \n\n\n\nWithin this exhibition\, Jalen Williams invites the viewer to look beyond binary notions of identity\, to see the spectrum of Blackness that exists in rural spaces\, and to engage with the stories of resistance\, connection\, and transformation that define his personal narrative. Not Just Black and White is not only a reflection on his upbringing\, but a broader understanding on how we all navigate the intersections of race\, identity\, and place. \n\n\n\nMore About Jalen M.M. Williams  \n\n\n\nJalen Martise Micquiel Williams (b. 2004) is a multidisciplinary North Carolina based artist that predominantly focuses on printmaking and illustration. Within his work\, Jalen Williams acutely observes the concepts of expression\, surrealism\, and counterculture. With the applied usage of various mediums and methods\, Williams pushes to gain self-reflection and introspection throughout his work as a unique Black individual. In obtaining a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Drawing and Printmaking\, Williams impels his studies by expanding upon unique identities\, stories\, and voices of other individuals in his works. In his compositions\, Williams prompts viewers to have a sense of reflection and understanding to the individuals around them. \n\n\n\n@Marty_Micq \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nGreensboro Project Space Weekly Hours: \n\n\n\nTuesday-Friday\, 12:00-5:00pm \n\n\n\nSaturday\, 2:00-5:00pm

SUMMARY:Marya Fancey\, organ
DESCRIPTION:Download Program\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe importance of philanthropy has never been greater. Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n\n\n\nJoin Our Email List\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nScholar-performer Marya Fancey uses her research to bridge temporal and cultural gaps in music for students and audiences. She received a 2017–2018 Fulbright Student Research Award to Poland for Historical Music Performance. This grant supported her dissertation research on organ masses from the Tablature of Johannes of Lublin (ca. 1540)\, culminating in a performance of its three mass cycles with vocal ensemble Flores Rosarum at the fifteenth-century Church of the Holy Cross in Krakow. She has presented at meetings of the Historical Keyboard Society of North America and the SE chapter of the American Musicological Society. \n\n\n\nHer concert programs frequently incorporate works by underappreciated composers. In 2016 Marya Fancey introduced Polish audiences to the music of Florence Price and David Hurd at the Podlaskie Organ Festival and the 18th International Festival of Organ Music at Pelplin Cathedral. She gave the 2015 world premiere of Passacaglia and Triple Fugue (organ) by Louise Talma. In 2011 she performed Sonata No. 2 (piano) by Grażyna Bacewicz at the 15th Annual Festival of Women Composers (Gainesville\, FL). \n\n\n\nIn studio and classroom teaching she augments the traditional classical canon with lesser-known compositions as well as works from a variety of other musical styles. She has taught music studies courses at UNCG\, Guilford College\, and the University of Florida. Her past professional activities include apprentice organ builder\, church organist and choir director\, private music teacher\, and assistant music editor. \n\n\n\nMarya Fancey holds the DMA degree in Organ Performance from UNC-Greensboro\, where she studied with André Lash (organ) and Andrew Willis (harpsichord and fortepiano)\, with a Post-Master’s certificate in Music Theory Pedagogy and a Post-Baccalaureate certificate in Historical Keyboard Performance. Her interest in the scholar-performer model arose from masterclasses with Marie-Claire Alain\, Olivier Latry\, John Grew\, William Porter\, Hank Knox\, and Edoardo Bellotti at multiple McGill Summer Organ Academies between 2005 and 2015.
