His retrospective of photo-collages\, paintings\,sculptures\, videos\, and installations spans almost forty years\, with many showntogether for the first time. His artistic expression explores the ideasconnecting his research interests without having to resort to the fixedmeanings required in academic language.  \nGrieve uses collage\, assemblage\, montage\, andinstallation–techniques originally employed by the early 20thcentury avant-guard movements. The Dadaists\, Surrealists\, and earlyConceptualists reinvented the role of artist with strategies to battle ossifiedinstitutions. Their materials and techniques could satirize social conventions\,undermine the certainty of rationality\, or embody the sensory and informationaloverload that was part of modernization. Similarly\, Grieve uses found photographic images\, many from the Library of Congress\,and found objects\, combining them to create apersonal language. Their layering\,superimposition\, transparency\, and montage unify his source materials with a new logic. The resulting aestheticis one of free-associative flows\, lucid dreaming\, and humor with titles thatplay with etymology\, imply conceptual readings\, or make cross-disciplinaryreferences to add an additional layer of interpretation. \n In this electric moment\, as thephysical atomizes into data and perception into pixels\, Grieve’s retrospective isnot just a collection of objects. It’s an archive of a life understanding itself. Face coverings that cover the nose and mouth are strongly encouraged\, but not required\, while inside the performance hall.\n\n\n\n\n\n \nAlexander Ezerman\, cello\, comes from a family where the cello runs four generations deep\, including two former associate principals of the Philadelphia Orchestra. A prize winner in national and international competition\, he has appeared as a soloist and chamber musician across North America\, South America\, and Europe. An active advocate and performer of new music\, he has been involved in numerous premiers\, and has performed all twelve of the “Sacher” pieces for solo cello in a single recital. He has recorded on the New World\, Centaur and Innova Labels. In the summer\, he is on the faculty of the Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival in Burlington Vermont. He has previously been on the faculties of the Brevard Music Center and the Killington Music Festival and Texas Tech University\, where he was a founding member of the Botticelli String Quartet. Ezerman holds a BM degree from Oberlin College Conservatory and a Master of Music and Doctorate of Musical Arts from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. His primary mentors include Timothy Eddy\, Norman Fischer\, David Wells and his grandmother Elsa Hilger. His work has been featured at the Guggenheim Museum\, the High Line\, and New Museum\, and recently profiled in the New York Times and CNN. His solo exhibition\, The Breath of Empty Space\, was recently presented at MICA\, MASS MoCA\, and The Bronx Museum. The Company weaves contemporary dance\, music\, and text with the history\, culture\, and spiritual traditions of the African Diaspora under the artistic direction of Chanon Judson and Samantha Speis. \nOff the concert stage\, UBW has developed an extensive community engagement program\, BOLD (Builders\, Organizers\, and Leaders through Dance). UBW’s largest community engagement project is its Summer Leadership Institute (SLI). This 10-day intensive training program connects dance professionals with community-based artists/activists in a learning experience to leverage the arts as a vehicle for civic engagement. \nUBW launched the Choreographic Center Initiative (CCI) in January 2016.
