SUMMARY:“Coming Soon?” Exhibition @ Greensboro Project Space
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition on View\nWhen: September 20th- October 1st\, 2022\nClosing Reception: September 22nd 6:00pm-8:00pm\nWhere: Greensboro Project Space (111 E February One Place) \nGallery Hours: Tuesdays-Fridays\, 12-5pm; Saturdays\, 2-5pm\nGroup Show\, Featuring: Adam Carlin with Derek ToomesMore About Coming Soon? \nComing Soon? is a socially engaged art project that uses techniques in speculative and science fiction for diverse communities in Greensboro\, North Carolina to imagine how empty storefronts and uninhabited commercial properties could serve their communities. During collaborative visioning sessions with the artist Adam Carlin\, graphic designer Irvin Maldonado\, and students in Derek Toomes’ Interior Architecture Department at UNC Greensboro\, each community will design a pseudo institution that could or should exist in Downtown Greensboro.Coming soon signs for these fictionalized spaces will then be installed on vacant properties as temporary public art pieces\, publicly projecting a potential future that is inclusive and accessible for those who are often under-represented. These ambiguous yet thought-provoking installations will allow the public to pause and contemplate who our current city is truly for\, and will empower the constituents of a city to own a future that is often prescribed rather than collectively created. \nAdam CarlinAdam Carlin is a curator\, educator\, administrator and social practice artist. He is currently the Director of Learning & Engagement at the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse\, NY. He is also co-Director of the artist project\, the Greensboro Contemporary Jewish Museum\, a decentralized museum that explores the intersections between contemporary art practices and southern Jewish life. Carlin was previously the Director of Community Engagement for UNC Greensboro’s College of Visual and Performing Arts and Director of UNCG’s off-campus contemporary art center Greensboro Project Space. Other notable projects Carlin co-Founded and co-Directed include Creek Colleges\, an organization that created schools on the banks of rivers\, lakes\, and creeks that are going through active restoration and Some Thing Spacious\, an experimental project space in Oakland\, CA that focused on participatory art practices. He received a BFA from California College of the Arts and an MFA in Art and Social Practice from Portland State University.Carlin’s practice draws from a variety of histories and lineages. From community organizing principles defined in the civil rights era; to the expanded field of sculpture; to the contemporary canon of socially engaged arts. But first and foremost his practice draws from that which is right in front of him. He makes both permanent and ephemeral projects that are created in context to the external environment\, be that a community\, a history\, a situation\, a place\, or a person. The projects act as platforms for these constituents to tell their stories\, to express their own creativity\, and to contribute to a collective idea or action. Some of his personal works often take the form of institutes as artworks which grants artists the power to not only create institutions of their own but to radically reimagine institutional practices in order to counter systemic inequalities that are embedded into the tradition of the arts. Working simultaneously as a curator\, educator\, administrator\, and socially engaged artist\, Carlin’s artistic projects have taken the forms of schools\, colleges\, museums\, departments\, and various other institutions whose qualities he has co-opted as a container for participatory projects for the public. \nDerek ToomesDerek Toomes is an artist based in Greensboro and Raleigh\, NC. Derek is drawn to the iconic imagery of popular culture\, as he is equally interested in societal location as a culture inundated by imagery. His sourcing as well as appropriation of images allows Derek to create work that is aesthetically and anthropologically situated within culture\, while also commenting on that culture.He is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Interior Architecture at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. \nIrvin MaldonadoIrvin Maldonado is a Latine artist currently based in Greensboro\, North Carolina\, passionate about the creative process and visualizing communication. The works elected here are exemplary moments of an ongoing investigation of symbol and form derived from the language of everyday life\, developed from a vested interest in the visually syntactic language of the varied printmaking processes. The work is the direct result of not only the deconstruction of language but also an inquiry of symbols. \nThese works exist between domains: not quite drawing\, printed matter\, or painting in the traditional sense. There is an aesthetic thread present linking the work\, but the inherent textual information displayed within the works is so deeply embedded and\, in some cases\, altogether hidden from view. \nThe intense obfuscation of language and image present in these works can create unique moments where one may be forced into suspending that inescapable desire to make sense of words and phrases\, and instead take notice of the formal elements of the pictorial imagery.  \nMore About James  \nJames Clemmons is a multidisciplinary artist and North Carolina native\, based in Greensboro\, NC. Formally equipped with an educational background situated within traditional printmaking and drawing\, his approach to the two-dimensional discipline of painting exhibits less classical language and representation. Instead\, the formal aspect of the work has more to do with the endless prose of daily life. \nJames’ work is a fighting combination of poetic references and interwoven fields of form and color. The effort of his work magnifies the unlimited idiosyncrasies of text and symbols that\, often overlooked\, await activation. Face coverings that cover the nose and mouth are strongly encouraged\, but not required\, while inside the performance hall.\n\n\n\n\n\nShe Is…Her Story: A Woman’s Love and Life in Her Own Words\nSoprano Theresa “Teri” Bickham has been praised for her “expressive legato line” and “fine piano nuances.” She made her European debut singing scenes from La Traviata under the direction of Maestro Eduardo Müller. Dr. Bickham has performed with opera companies throughout the United States including Houston Grand Opera\, Opera New Jersey\, Opera in the Heights\, Loudoun Lyric Opera\, and Opera Camerata of Washington. She has performed a diverse repertory of operatic roles that include a specialization in Mozart heroines (Donna Anna\, La Countessa\, Fiordiligi)\, Italian opera (Adina\, Violetta\, Musetta)\, German operetta (Rosalinde\, Hanna Glawari)\, and contemporary American opera (A Bird in Your Ear\, The Beautiful Bridegroom.) \nDr. Bickham is a frequent guest artist in the United States and Europe. Recent concert appearances include works by Vivaldi\, Bach\, Mozart\, Handel\, Brahms\, Rossini\, Orff\, Vaughn Williams and numerous orchestral pops performances. In competition\, Dr. Bickham was an international semi-finalist in the Concorso Lirico Internazionale per Cantanti lirici Rosa Ponselle in Caiazzo\, Italy. She has also been the winner of national and regional competitions including: The Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions-Mid-Atlantic Regional Finalist\, Palm Beach Opera Semi-Finalist\, Shreveport Opera Singer of the Year Finalist\, MD/DC National Association of Teachers of Singing\, and the Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Houston. \nAn avid recitalist\, Dr. Bickham has performed recital tours in Maryland\, Virginia\, Texas\, Washington DC\, and most recently as a part of the Bellingham Music Club in Washington state. Her passion for art song has led to diverse programs specializing in repertoire written for specific voices and the exploration of the performer’s role in the creation of music. \nDr. Bickham’s performance experience has culminated in her passion for training young professionals. Her students have been recognized for their polished performances and exemplary teaching. Former students have attended prestigious schools that include The Juilliard School\, Indiana University\, the University of Maryland\, the University of Tennessee\, the University of Denver Lamont School of Music\, Bard College Conservatory of Music\, Ithaca College\, Boston Conservatory\, and Roosevelt University. In addition\, they have won prizes with the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions\, Annapolis Opera\, the National Society of Arts and Letters\, National Association of Teachers of Singing\, and the Classical Singer competitions. Many students are performing professionally with such companies as The Metropolitan Opera\, Opera Theater of St. Louis\, Marilyn Horne: The Song Continues Masterclass Series at Carnegie Hall\, Annapolis Opera\, Knoxville Opera\, New York Lyric Opera\, Disney Cruise Lines\, and Creativiva Entertainment. \nDr. Bickham is proud of the many music educators that she has taught. Her former students are passionate and respected educators throughout Maryland\, Virginia\, Pennsylvania\, Texas\, and other areas in the United States. \nDr. Bickham holds degrees from the University of Maryland College Park (DMA)\, the University of Houston (MM)\, and Towson University (BM). She received additional training as a young artist at Opera New Jersey and AIMS in Graz. Dr. Bickham taught at Towson University for thirteen years before joining the faculty of the University of North Carolina Greensboro as an Assistant Professor of Voice in 2019.

Face coverings that cover the nose and mouth are strongly encouraged\, but not required\, while inside the performance hall.\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\nIsraeli conductor Rotem Weinberg is known for his profound musicality\, creative programming\, and polished performances. He is a cross-genre musician\, at home in classical\, operatic\, and pops repertoires alike. In the fall of 2022 he will assume the position of Visiting Assistant Professor of Conducting and Director of Orchestras at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro\, where he will conduct orchestras\, opera\, and teach conducting. \nRotem began his conducting studies at the age of seventeen\, under the guidance of Vag Papian. Before starting his academic studies\, he served in the Israel Defense Forces military band as head librarian and assistant conductor. He earned a BM in orchestral conducting from the Buchmann-Mehta School of Music of Tel-Aviv University\, where he studied with Prof. Yoav Talmi\, Yi-an Xu\, and Ronen Borshevsky. His graduate studies took him to The University of Michigan\, where he earned both MM and DMA degrees in orchestral conducting\, studying with the renowned conductor and pedagogue Kenneth Kiesler. \nAt the University of Michigan\, Rotem served as Music Director of the Campus Symphony Orchestra and the Michigan Pops Orchestra\, bringing these ensembles to new musical heights. He also filled the role of assistant conductor to the prestigious orchestra program\, supporting the work of four student orchestras. As cover conductor of the University of Michigan Opera Theater\, he conducted operas such as Puccini’s La bohème\, Handel’s Alcina\, and William Bolcom’s Dinner at Eight. In February 2018 he served as the first assistant conductor for the ground-breaking test performance of Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess’ new critical edition. Following his studies\, Rotem served as Music Director of Spectrum Orchestra in Birmingham\, Michigan\, Associate Conductor of the Michigan Youth Symphony Orchestra\, and Cover Conductor for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. \nRotem participated in workshops and masterclasses with world renowned orchestral conductors\, including Simon Rattle\, Zubin Mehta\, Zsolt Nagy and Christopher Lyndon Gee. He participated in additional conducting workshops with Joseph Missal\, Felix Hauswirth\, and Laszlo Marosi. \nIn his native Israel\, Rotem led several orchestral\, wind\, and vocal ensembles\, achieving national acclaim as a conductor and educator. He received frequent honors and awards for his conducting and musicianship\, including the America-Israel Cultural Foundation Excellence Grant in orchestral conducting\, the Buchmann-Mehta School of Music Excellence Scholarship\, and the Tel Aviv University Dean of Arts Excellence Award for his outstanding musical and academic achievements. \nAn advocate of contemporary music\, Rotem has collaborated and premiered work by composers Nina Shekhar\, Natalie Moller\, Tyler Arnold\, Sawyer Denton\, and Samuel Sussman.

Face coverings that cover the nose and mouth are strongly encouraged\, but not required\, while inside the performance hall.\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nDr. Erika Boysen is an international performer\, educator and collaborator who is the Assistant Professor of Flute at the University of North Carolina Greensboro.  Known for her verve and energy while teaching\, Erika has previously served as faculty at the Interlochen Arts Academy and Interlochen Arts Camp\, Northwestern Michigan College and Ann Arbor School for the Performing Arts. \nCommitted to developing new and innovative ways of presenting and teaching the traditional model of classical flute\, the majority of her research and scholarship focuses on cross-disciplinary collaboration between the arts.  Through movement\, singing and acting\, she promotes an approach to education and performance that highlights multiple aspects of artistic expression. \nIn demand as a clinician and speaker\, she has been a featured artist at the Montana Flute Festival\, Eastern Carolina Flute Symposium and Iowa Flute Festival.  In addition\, she has published articles in Flute Talk Magazine and Physics Education Journal and presented at the North Carolina Music Educators Association Conference and Wild Acres Flute Retreat. \nErika has toured across the United States and Europe performing in a variety of chamber\, orchestral and improvisation-based ensembles.  Currently\, as a member of the UNCG East Wind Quintet\, Seen/Heard Trio and COLLAPSS Ensemble (Collective for Happy Sounds)\, she is dedicated to championing music of living composers. Erika has received orchestral fellowships from the Aspen Music Festival\, Texas Music Festival and Brevard Music Festival having worked with conductors: Christian Arming\, David Robertson\, Esa-Pekka Salonen\, Robert Spano and Hugh Wolff. These orchestral and chamber pursuits are complemented by her appearances at ArtX Detroit\, Meadowbrook\, and Culture Lab Festivals as a part of Shara Nova’s indie rock/alternative pop band\, My Brightest Diamond. \nHer first solo debut album\, Reimagining the Album\, will be released via an online application featuring newly commissioned works for the singing/moving flutist by composers: David Biedenbender\, Mark Engebretson\, Jane Rigler and Sam L. Richards.  In addition\, she can be heard on the Blue Griffin and Arts Laureate Recording labels. \nA native of Iowa\, Dr. Boysen received her Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Michigan\, Master of Music from the New England Conservatory\, and Bachelor of Music from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. \n\nThe renowned UNCG Bands are dedicated to the performance\, study\, and cultivation of wind band music of the highest quality\, and are a serious and distinctive medium of musical expression. Face coverings that cover the nose and mouth are strongly encouraged\, but not required\, while inside the performance hall.\n\n\n\n\n\n \nTrumpet artist Garrett Klein has performed across the United States and Asia as a soloist\, chamber player\, and orchestral musician. He is currently serving as Assistant Professor of Trumpet at UNC Greensboro where he leads the Trumpet Studio\, coaches the Graduate Brass Quintet\, and directs the Trumpet Ensemble. Previously Garrett served on the faculties of St. Olaf College and Gustavus Adolphus College. \nGarrett is a member of the Dallas Brass\, an internationally recognized touring ensemble. Dallas Brass has a legacy of presenting uplifting performances\, which span a wide array of musical styles. In addition to performing shows across the country\, Dallas Brass demonstrates a steadfast commitment to music education by working to inspire students of all ages while on tour. \nOutside of touring with Dallas Brass\, Garrett has performed with the Charlotte Symphony\, Winston-Salem Symphony\, the North Carolina Brass Band\, and the Carolina Brass. He has also appeared as a guest musician with The Phoenix Symphony\, the Tucson Symphony Orchestra\, the New World Symphony\, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra\, and the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. Additionally\, Garrett is an Associate Artist with the Rodney Marsalis Philadelphia Big Brass. A new music advocate\, Garrett has worked with composers to commission new works for trumpet\, presenting newly composed works at International Trumpet Guild Conferences. \nGarrett earned his DMA and MM degrees at Arizona State University\, along with a Certificate in Music Theory Pedagogy. Prior to ASU\, he studied at the prestigious Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music in Singapore and St. Olaf College in Minnesota. Garrett Klein is an endorsing artist for Conn-Selmer and proudly performs on Vincent Bach trumpets. \n\nThe renowned UNCG Bands are dedicated to the performance\, study\, and cultivation of wind band music of the highest quality\, and are a serious and distinctive medium of musical expression. She is committed to listening\, learning\, and becoming a better member of society with the hopes of paving roads for justice\, collaboration\, and kindness in communities. She has performed widely in such settings as the Brancaleoni International Music Festival in Italy\, the Gijón International Piano Festival in Spain\, the Kennedy Center\, Interlochen Arts Academy\, and China. (However\, she sometimes prefers to perform in intimate spaces such as living rooms\, personal Zoom calls\, and breweries.) Recent performances have included Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy with UNCG’s University Symphony Orchestra\, Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G major with the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra\, Messiaen’s La ville d’en haut with the University of Michigan Symphony Band\, and Messiaen’s Oiseaux exotiques with the University of Michigan Contemporary Directions Ensemble. A Presser scholar\, Annie has presented at Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) conferences at collegiate\, state\, and national levels and College Music Society (CMA) regional conferences. \nAnnie’s essential goal as an artist is to make communities richer and more meaningful through the arts. To this end\, Annie strives to make music accessible to audiences of all backgrounds by expanding and rethinking the traditional recital format to include interdisciplinary and interactive elements\, all with the aim of encouraging audiences to engage with the artistic experience. Recent projects include\, “Music by the Barrel\,” which was a concert series at the Ann Arbor Distilling Company in Ann Arbor\, “Beyond the Keys: Unlocking Piano Works” which was an interactive concert on the roof of a parking deck performed by her piano pedagogy students\, and “Brews-keys” which featured UNCG piano faculty and students at Oden Brewing Company in Greensboro\, North Carolina. She also led music workshops that focused on group singing and music as a form of expression through the Prison Creative Arts Project at University of Michigan. \nDuring the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic\, Annie personally picked up and delivered keyboards to UNCG piano students in order to ensure that music within student’s lives would not be stopped. As a strong believer of creating a better and more equitable “normal\,” she also founded A Seat at the Piano (ASAP) in the summer of 2020 (aseatatthepiano.com). ASAP is a resource that is dedicated to the promotion of inclusion in the performance and study of solo piano repertoire. \nMuch of Annie’s research is devoted to contemporary music and studying the pedagogical capabilities of contemporary piano techniques. In 2018\, Annie received the Rackham Predoctoral Fellowship from the University of Michigan to create a pedagogical resource called Circles and Lines that will feature newly commissioned works by female composers that introduce unconventional piano techniques to intermediate pianists. She is also the pianist of Khemia Ensemble (khemiaensemble.com)\, a contemporary chamber ensemble that is dedicated to promoting contemporary classical music by cultivating inclusive place-making\, collaborative mentorships\, and authentic storytelling through immersive\, multimedia performances. She released the album\, “World Map” with Parma Recordings as the former pianist of Four Corner’s Ensemble. Committed to supporting musicians in finding their unique career path\, she also worked as a Programming Assistant at University of Michigan’s Excellence in Entrepreneurship\, Career Empowerment & Leadership (EXCEL) Lab. She also serves as a member of the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy (NCKP) Career Development and Innovation Committee. \nAnnie received her MM in Piano Performance from the University of Michigan and her BM in Piano Performance with a minor in Public Health from New York University. She received her DMA in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Michigan in 2019. Her teachers include Logan Skelton\, José Ramón Mendez\, Miyoko Lotto\, Anne-Marie McDermott\, and Faye Bonner. She is currently the Assistant Professor of Piano and Piano Pedagogy at University of North Carolina at Greensboro. (anniejeng.com) \n\nThe UNCG Wind Ensemble is a highly select concert band of fifty performers majoring in music at the UNCG School of Music. Performers in the current Wind Ensemble are drawn from sixteen states\, Slovenia\, and Hong Kong. The ensemble has enjoyed a distinguished record of performance throughout its history. In January 1992\, the UNCG Wind Ensemble performed “A Tribute to John Philip Sousa” to a capacity crowd of 2\,700 at the Concert Hall of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington\, D.C. Twice\, the Wind Ensemble earned critical acclaim from The Washington Post following concerts in the nation’s capital. The Wind Ensemble has performed throughout the eastern United States in recent years including the first-ever performance\, in 1987\, by a North Carolina collegiate ensemble in Lincoln Center\, New York City. The Wind Ensemble performed that same year in West Virginia\, Virginia\, Pennsylvania\, and Washington\, D.C. The Wind Ensemble has recorded nineteen commercially-available albums which have received widespread praise. \nIn 1985\, the Wind Ensemble performed a series of concerts with Pulitzer Prize-winning composer-conductor Karel Husa. In 1988\, the UNCG Wind Ensemble performed in New Orleans\, Louisiana by invitation of the College Band Directors National Association for the Southern Division convention. On a number of occasions\, the Wind Ensemble has commissioned and premiered works from leading band composers. In November of 1990\, the Wind Ensemble performed for the Southern Division of MENC convention. In February 1994\, the UNCG Wind Ensemble performed for a convention of the CBDNA and NBA in Williamsburg\, Virginia. In March 1999\, the Wind Ensemble performed for the national convention of the American Bandmasters Association in Melbourne\, Florida. In February 2000\, the Wind Ensemble performed for the CBDNA Southern Division Convention hosted at UNCG. In 2006\, the Wind Ensemble performed in The Music Center at Strathmore in Bethesda\, Maryland\, shared a concert with the United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” in Arlington\, Virginia\, and collaborated with Karel Husa\, David Dzubay\, and Carter Pann in the performaces of their music\, including two commissions. In 2009\, the Wind Ensemble performed at the CBDNA National Convention at the University of Texas at Austin and performed additional concerts in Georgia\, Alabama\, Louisiana\, and Texas as part of a week-long tour. The Wind Ensemble performed at the 2011 National Convention of the American Bandmasters Association and the 2013 National Conference of the College Band Directors National Association hosted in Greensboro. Most recently\, the UNCG took a twelve day concert tour through the Czech Republic\, Austria\, and Italy\, the highlight of which was a concert in Prague’s famed Dvořák Hall.

DESCRIPTION:Exhibition on View\nWhen: September 20th – October 1st\, 2022 \nClosing Reception: September 30th 6-8pm\nWhere: Greensboro Project Space (111 E February One Place) \nGallery Hours: Tuesdays-Fridays\, 12-5pm; Saturdays\, 2-5pm\nMore About EYE SITE \nEYE SITE is a selection of recent works by Greensboro native James Clemmons. The works elected here are exemplary moments of an ongoing investigation of symbol and form derived from the language of everyday life\, developed from a vested interest in the visually syntactic language of the varied printmaking processes. The work is the direct result of not only the deconstruction of language but also an inquiry of symbols. \nThese works exist between domains: not quite drawing\, printed matter\, or painting in the traditional sense. There is an aesthetic thread present linking the work\, but the inherent textual information displayed within the works is so deeply embedded and\, in some cases\, altogether hidden from view. \nThe intense obfuscation of language and image present in these works can create unique moments where one may be forced into suspending that inescapable desire to make sense of words and phrases\, and instead take notice of the formal elements of the pictorial imagery.  \nMore About James  \nJames Clemmons is a multidisciplinary artist and North Carolina native\, based in Greensboro\, NC. Formally equipped with an educational background situated within traditional printmaking and drawing\, his approach to the two-dimensional discipline of painting exhibits less classical language and representation. Instead\, the formal aspect of the work has more to do with the endless prose of daily life. \nJames’ work is a fighting combination of poetic references and interwoven fields of form and color. The effort of his work magnifies the unlimited idiosyncrasies of text and symbols that\, often overlooked\, await activation.
