SUMMARY:Nevermore/Everafter ART Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Nevermore/Everafter\n\n\n\n2026 Painting Capstone Exhibition\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFeaturing: Aminah Coppage\, Sacha Feierman\, Shayla Scales\, Elissa Ukhueligbe \n\n\n\nOctober 20 – 24\, 2026\n\n\n\nReception: Friday\, Oct 23rd | 6-8P\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nNevermore/Everafter is a multifaceted exploration of perspective and the temporaneous. It is a collection of paintings and mixed media works\, each conducting their own exploration. Through their respective media\, Aminah Coppage\, Sacha Feierman\, Shayla Scales\, Elissa Ukhueligbe reach the collective conclusion that time is not linear. Time is orbital and oscillating\, through the past\, the present\, phases\, and memory. Nevermore/Everafter is altered by individual perception and reflection.

SUMMARY:The End of the World Party Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The End of the World Party\n\n\n\nSolo Exhibition by Juno Rose  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOctober 27 – 31\, 2026\n\n\n\nReception: Friday\, Oct 30th | 6-8P\n\n\n\nMore About The End of the World Party \n\n\n\nThe End of the World Party uses the imagery of biblical and nuclear apocalypse to explore the intersection of racial and queer identity\, primarily centering black\, gender-nonconforming bodies. Using film and illustration in tandem\, this dying world of burning pylons\, broken power lines\, and crying angels is brought to life\, using Juno Rose\, and her ever-evolving character\, Mandinga\, as its main subjects. Alongside the main concept\, this exhibition invites you to sit and watch the other filmic works of Juno Rose\, these films exploring race\, intimacy\, and sexuality through a variety of genres. In all\, these four rooms use the often-overlooked perspectives of black\, queer\, and transgender individuals to ask the viewer to consider the beliefs they have about themselves and those who look nothing like them as they navigate a volatile America and an increasingly inhospitable land. \n\n\n\nMore About Juno Rose \n\n\n\nJuno Rose is an Afro-Caribbean gender-nonconforming filmmaker\, animator\, and illustrator whose work explores the intersection of racial\, sexual\, and queer identity using surrealist imagery and absurdist perspectives. Rose graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in May 2024\, earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Animation. Since then\, she has worked on multiple award-winning\, festival-selected films\, showcasing her work at a variety of east-coast venues such as the Plaza Theatre in Atlanta\, The Carolina Theatre in Greensboro\, The North Carolina Museum of Art\, and many more with the help of the film collective she co-founded\, Classroom 105. \n\n\n\nCurrently\, she continues her analysis of black and queer life with her newest project: End of the World\, the first installation of which premieres at the Greensboro Project Space. \n\n\n\nLearn more:  www.junopunkia.com   | IG: @junopunkia

SUMMARY:James Giles\, piano
DESCRIPTION:Event Details\n\n\n\n\nDownload Program\n\n\n\n\n\nParking\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe importance of philanthropy has never been greater. Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n\n\n\n\n\njazz\, music\n\n\nInstagram\n\nFacebook\n\nX\n\nYouTube\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJames Giles regularly performs in important musical centers in America\, Europe\, and Asia as a recitalist and chamber musician. He is coordinator of the piano program and director of music performance graduate studies at Northwestern University’s Bienen School of Music\, where his class of students has featured many prize-winning young artists. \n\n\n\nIn an eclectic repertoire encompassing the solo and chamber music literatures\, Giles is equally at home in the standard repertoire as in the music of our time. He has commissioned and premiered works by William Bolcom\, C. Curtis-Smith\, Stephen Hough\, Lowell Liebermann\, Ned Rorem\, Augusta Read Thomas\, Earl Wild\, and James Wintle. Most of these new works are featured on Giles’s Albany Records release entitled “American Virtuoso.” His recording of solo works by Schumann and Prokofiev is available on England’s Master Musicians label. He recorded John Harbison’s Horn Trio with the Chicago Chamber Musicians and Timothy Dunne’s Piano Concerto with the St. Petersburg Chamber Philharmonic in Russia. \n\n\n\nHis Paris recital at the Salle Cortot in was hailed as “a true revelation\, due equally to the pianist’s artistry as to his choice of program.” After a recital at the Sibelius Academy\, the critic for Helsinki’s main newspaper wrote that “Giles is a technically polished\, elegant pianist.” And a London critic called his Wigmore Hall recital “one of the most sheerly inspired piano recitals I can remember hearing for some time” and added that “with a riveting intelligence given to everything he played\, it was the kind of recital you never really forget.” \n\n\n\nHe has performed with New York’s Jupiter Symphony (Alkan and Czerny); the London Soloists Chamber Orchestra in Queen Elizabeth Hall (Mozart and Beethoven); the Kharkiv Philharmonic in Ukraine (Prokofiev and Rachmaninoff); and with the Opera Orchestra of New York in Alice Tully Hall (Chopin). After his Tully Hall solo recital debut\, critic Harris Goldsmith wrote: “Giles has a truly distinctive interpretive persona. This was beautiful pianism – direct and unmannered.” Other tours have included concerts in the Shanghai International Piano Festival; St. Petersburg’s White Nights New Music Festival\, Warsaw’s Chopin Academy of Music; Chicago’s Dame Myra Hess Series\, Salt Lake City’s Assembly Hall Concert Series\, and in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall\, the Kennedy Center\, the Musikhalle in Hamburg\, and the Purcell Room at London’s South Bank Centre. He has given live recitals over the public radio stations of New York\, Boston\, Chicago\, and Indianapolis. As a chamber musician he has collaborated with members of the National and Chicago Symphonies and with members of the Escher\, Pacifica\, Cassatt\, Chicago\, Ying\, Chester\, St. Lawrence\, Essex\, Lincoln\, and Miami Quartets\, as well as singers Aprile Millo and Anthony Dean Griffey. \n\n\n\nA native of North Carolina\, Dr. Giles studied with Byron Janis at the Manhattan School of Music\, Jerome Lowenthal at the Juilliard School\, Nelita True at the Eastman School of Music\, and Robert Shannon at Oberlin College. He received early career assistance from the Clarisse B. Kampel Foundation and was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study in Italy with the legendary pianist Lazar Berman. \n\n\n\nThe pianist was the recipient of a fellowship grant and the Christel Award from the American Pianists Association. He won first prizes at the New Orleans International Piano Competition\, the Joanna Hodges International Piano Competition\, and the Music Teachers National Association Competition. As a student he was awarded the prestigious William Petschek Scholarship at the Juilliard School and the Arthur Dann Award at the Oberlin College Conservatory. He wrote for Piano and Keyboard magazine and has presented lecture-recitals at the national conventions of the Music Teachers National Association\, the College Music Society\, and Pi Kappa Lambda. He regularly serves on competition jury panels and has been conference artist for many state music teachers associations. \n\n\n\nHe gives master classes and lectures at schools nationwide\, including Juilliard\, Manhattan\, Eastman\, Oberlin\, Indiana\, Yale\, and New England. During the summers he is director of the Amalfi Coast Music Festival and has taught at the Gijon Piano Festival\, Obidos Master Classes\, Eastern Music Festival\, Bowdoin\, Brevard\, Art of the Piano\, Colburn\, Interlochen\, ARIA\, Pianofest in the Hamptons\, and the Schlern Festival in Italy. His classes internationally have occurred throughout China as well as at Seoul National University\, Hanyang University (Seoul)\, Ewha Woman’s University (Seoul)\, the Royal Danish Academy of Music (Copenhagen)\, the Sibelius Academy (Helsinki)\, the Chopin Academy (Warsaw)\, the Royal Northern College of Music (Manchester) and the Royal College of Music (London).

SUMMARY:"The President's Own" United States Marine Band
DESCRIPTION:Event Details\n\n\n\n\nRequest Tickets (Beginning Sept. 30)\n\n\n\n\n\nParking\n\n\n\n\n\nUnites States Marine Band\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe importance of philanthropy has never been greater. Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n\n\n\nJoin Our Email List\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\njazz\, music\n\n\nInstagram\n\nFacebook\n\nX\n\nYouTube\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n“The President’s Own” United States Marine Band’s tour performance is free and open to the public. Free tickets will be available beginning September 30 and are limited to four (4) per request. \n\n\n\n\n\nPatron Information\n\n\n\nVenue doors will open 45 minutes before the concert\, with seating beginning at that time. Ticket holders should be seated at least 15 minutes before the performance to guarantee their seat. After that time\, any unclaimed seats may be released to patrons in the standby line on a first-come\, first-served basis. \n\n\n\nLarge bags and backpacks are not permitted inside the concert venue. No flash photography or video recording permitted. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEstablished by an Act of Congress in 1798\, the United States Marine Band (“The President’s Own”) is America’s oldest continuously active professional musical organization. Its mission is unique—to provide music for the President of the United States and the Commandant of the Marine Corps. \n\n\n\nPresident John Adams invited the Marine Band to make its White House debut on New Year’s Day\, 1801\, in the then-unfinished Executive Mansion. In March of that year\, the band performed for Thomas Jefferson’s inauguration and it is believed that it has performed for every presidential inaugural since. In Jefferson\, the band found its most visionary advocate. An accomplished musician himself\, Jefferson recognized the unique relationship between the band and the Chief Executive and he is credited with giving the Marine Band its title\, “The President’s Own.” \n\n\n\nWhether performing for State Dinners or South Lawn arrivals\, events of national significance\, or receptions\, Marine Band musicians appear at the White House an average of 200 times each year. These performances range from small ensembles such as a solo pianist\, jazz combo or brass quintet to a country band\, dance band or full concert band. The diversity of music often presented at the Executive Mansion makes versatility an important requirement for Marine Band members. Musicians are selected at auditions much like those of major symphony orchestras\, and they enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps for permanent duty with the Marine Band. Most of today’s members are graduates of the nation’s finest music schools\, and more than 60 percent hold advanced degrees in music. \n\n\n\nIn addition to its White House mission\, “The President’s Own” performs an annual season showcase series of indoor concerts and a popular outdoor summer concert series on the National Mall. Musicians from the band are frequently highlighted in solo performances and participate in more intimate chamber ensemble recitals that feature a wide range of smaller instrumental groups. Marine Band musicians also perform in many different types of ceremonies and events throughout the Washington\, D.C.\, metropolitan area including the Presidential Inauguration\, Full Honors funerals at Arlington National Cemetery\, Honor Flight ceremonies for veterans at the National World War II Memorial\, Friday Evening Parades at Marine Barracks\, Washington\, D.C.\, and educational programs in schools throughout the National Capital Region. \n\n\n\nEach fall\, the Marine Band travels throughout a portion of the continental United States during its concert tour\, a tradition initiated in 1891 by “The March King” John Philip Sousa\, who was the band’s legendary 17th Director. As Director from 1880–92\, Sousa brought “The President’s Own” to an unprecedented level of excellence and shaped the band into a world-famous musical organization. Since Sousa’s time\, the band’s musical reach has extended beyond America’s borders on several occasions with performances in England\, Norway\, Ireland\, the Netherlands\, Switzerland\, Singapore\, and the former Soviet Union. During Sousa’s tenure\, the Marine Band was one of the first musical ensembles to make sound recordings. By 1892\, more than 200 different titles were available for sale\, placing Sousa’s marches among the first and most popular pieces ever recorded. \n\n\n\nWhile the Marine Band is firmly dedicated to preserving the unique musical traditions established over its long history\, it is equally committed to serving as a leading ensemble in the development of new repertoire for winds. In 2000\, “The President’s Own” commissioned David Rakowski’s Ten of a Kind\, a piece honored as a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in music in 2002. In 2007\, the band commissioned “Scamp” by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Melinda Wagner\, and the Marine Band premièred Scott Lindroth’s Passage at the 2010 Midwest Clinic in Chicago. In 2011\, the band commissioned and premièred Flourishes and Meditations on a Renaissance Theme by Michael Gandolfi at the American Bandmasters Association’s annual convention in Norfolk\, Va. Most recently\, music written for the Marine Band has included Gerard Schwarz’ Above and Beyond\, Jacob Bancks’ The Information Age and Laurence Bitensky to write Fearsome Critters\, the latter of which was premièred at the Texas Bandmasters Association Convention in San Antonio in July 2012. \n\n\n\nOn July 11\, 1998\, the Marine Band celebrated its 200th anniversary with a command performance at the White House and a gala concert at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington attended by President and Mrs. Clinton. Also during its bicentennial year\, the Marine Band was the only ensemble inducted into the inaugural class of the American Classical Music Hall of Fame in Cincinnati. \n\n\n\nGiven its status among American musical organizations\, “The President’s Own” continues to attract prominent guest conductors from major orchestras around the globe\, including Osmo Vänskä\, Leonard Slatkin\, José Serebrier and Gerard Schwarz. On July 12\, 2003\, the Marine Band returned to the Kennedy Center to celebrate its 205th anniversary in a concert featuring guest conductor John Williams\, renowned composer of American film and concert works and laureate conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra. Williams returned to the podium in 2008 to conduct the final concert of the Living History concert series celebrating the Marine Band’s 210th anniversary. In honor of the Marine Band’s 215th birthday\, John Williams composed and dedicated an original work to the Marine Band aptly titled “For ‘The President’s Own.’” \n\n\n\nThe Marine Band’s integral role in the national culture and in the government’s official life has affirmed the importance of the arts as a bridge between people. Since 1798\, the Marine Band’s mission has been to provide music for the President of the United States and the Commandant of the Marine Corps. As the only musical organization with that mission\, the Marine Band looks to the future\, viewing its history and tradition as the foundation upon which to build its third century of bringing music to the White House and to the American people.

SUMMARY:Spartan Jazz Collective: 100 Years of John Coltrane
DESCRIPTION:The Spartan Jazz Collective\, UNCG’s premier faculty-student collaborative ensemble\, concludes the Jazz Studies program’s centennial celebration of John Coltrane with a dynamic performance spanning the full breadth of the jazz icon’s career\, from his early recordings as a leader to the groundbreaking works of the mid-1960s. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Miles Davis Jazz Studies Program at UNCG is a unique and innovative undergraduate jazz program designed to emulate the traditional process of learning jazz\, through a combination of mentorship\, real-world playing experiences\, and a communal approach to learning. Although the program is housed in one of the largest music schools in the Southeast\, it is kept intentionally small\, resulting in an intensive and highly personalized learning environment. \n\n\n\n UNCG offers the following degree programs for students interested in studying Jazz: \n\n\n\n\nBachelor of Music (B.M.) – Performance\n\n\n\nPost-Baccalaureate Certificate in Jazz Studies\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTicketPriceAdult$16.20Seniors$13.20Students$9.20Ticket prices include a $3.00 processing fee and applicable sales tax.\n\n\n\n\nPurchase Tickets
