At the center of the program is Johann de Meij’s Un momento dado\, which brings the two ensembles together in an expansive work filled with color\, energy\, and vivid musical contrasts. \n\n\n\nThe concert also explores the breadth of the wind repertoire through works by three compelling American and European voices. Ida Gotkovsky’s Poème du feu evokes the intensity and transformative power of fire\, while Charles Ives’s “The Alcotts” offers a reflective musical portrait inspired by the transcendentalist world of Concord\, Massachusetts. Matt Browne’s Keep It Up brings the program to an energetic close with rhythmic drive and infectious momentum. \n\n\n\nTogether\, these works move from fiery brilliance and contemplative lyricism to sweeping musical storytelling\, highlighting the rich colors and expressive possibilities of winds. \n\n\n\n\nAbout the Soloist\nAkropolis Reed Quintet\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFounded in 2009\, the Billboard-charting\, 7-time national prize-winning Akropolis Reed Quintet is “a sonically daring ensemble who specializes in performing new works with charisma and integrity” (BBC Music Magazine). In 2025\, the ensemble made history as the lead ensemble on the GRAMMY® Award-winning recording of Strands by Pascal Le Boeuf\, which won Best Instrumental Composition at the 67th Annual GRAMMY® Awards. Comprising five reed players and entrepreneurs unbounded by limits or categorization\, Akropolis has graced the Classical Billboard Charts with each of their last three albums\, including #2 in April\, 2024\, and has won seven national chamber music prizes including the 2014 Fischoff Gold Medal. Having premiered and commissioned more than 200 works by living artists and composers\, they are pioneers and champions of a new genre of classical music—the reed quintet. \n\n\n\nComposed of the same five members that brought about its founding over 15 years ago at the University of Michigan\, they are the first ensemble to receive the University’s Paul M. Boylan Alumni Award. Akropolis delivers 120 concerts and educational events worldwide each year at luminary series including Tanglewood\, Bravo! Vail\, University Musical Society\, Chamber Music Northwest\, and more. Akropolis became the first reed quintet associated with a GRAMMY®-winning recording through its 2024 album\, Are We Dreaming the Same Dream?\, a collaboration with Pascal Le Boeuf and drummer Christian Euman. The album features “Strands\,” which earned the 2025 GRAMMY® Award for Best Instrumental Composition. \n\n\n\nUtilizing their “sheer musical imagination” (Gramophone)\, the quintet is also known for powerful collaborations with youth and others within its Southeast Michigan community. Certified as a 510(c)(3) nonprofit organization\, Akropolis runs a Detroit-based summer festival called Together We Sound\, holds an annual\, school year-long music composition residencies at Cass Tech\, Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, and Detroit School of Arts high schools\, and produces a 10-day Chamber Music Institute focused on artist training in partnership with Interlochen Center for the Arts.   \n\n\n\nDescribed as “pure gold” by the San Francisco Chronicle\, Akropolis Reed Quintet performs worldwide and is represented exclusively by Ariel Artists. \n\n\n\nBack to Program \n\n\n\n\nAbout the Wind Ensemble\n\n\n\n\nThe UNCG Wind Ensemble is the premier wind band of the UNCG School of Music\, uniting fifty outstanding musicians from across the United States and around the world. Its members—ranging from first‑year undergraduates to master’s and doctoral students in performance and music education—are selected through a highly competitive audition process. Ensemble musicians regularly earn top solo and chamber awards\, competitive scholarships and fellowships\, and professional positions in orchestras\, military bands\, teaching\, and arts leadership. Current students represent seventeen states\, Slovenia\, and Hong Kong. \n\n\n\nFor decades\, the ensemble has built a distinguished record of artistic excellence\, with acclaimed performances at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts\, Lincoln Center\, and leading venues throughout the eastern United States. Its catalog of more than twenty commercial recordings has received national recognition and helped position UNCG as a leader in wind band performance\, commissioning\, and recording. \n\n\n\nThe Wind Ensemble has been featured at major national and regional conferences of the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA)\, National Band Association (NBA)\, American Bandmasters Association (ABA)\, and Music Educators National Conference (MENC). The ensemble has also collaborated with prominent composers and performers\, including Pulitzer Prize–winning composer Karel Husa and other influential figures in the field. \n\n\n\nRecent highlights include performances at the Music Center at Strathmore; a joint concert with the United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own”; a twelve‑day international tour through the Czech Republic\, Austria\, and Italy\, culminating in a featured performance at Prague’s renowned Dvořák Hall; and a tour of the Southern United States that concluded with an appearance at the national conference of the College Band Directors National Association. \n\n\n\nBack to Program \n\n\n\n\nUNCG Bands\nThe UNCG Bands are devoted to the performance\, study\, and advancement of wind band music at the highest artistic level. SUMMARY:Clarence Morgan
DESCRIPTION:Falk Visiting Artist Talk: Clarence Morgan\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClarence “Morgan” Morgan is an American abstract painter whose work spans painting\, drawing\, printmaking\, and an ongoing reflective writing practice. Rooted in gesture\, intuition\, and process\, his work explores shifting relationships between order and improvisation. Through pattern\, repetition\, and fluid mark-making\, Morgan examines perceptual experience and the ways visual systems echo larger questions of time\, space\, and the natural and cosmic world.  \n\n\n\nMorgan’s paintings\, drawings\, and prints have been exhibited nationally and internationally\, with works represented in numerous public and private collections including the Cleveland Museum of Art\, the Walker Art Center\, the Minneapolis Institute of Art\, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts\, and the Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum. His recent and current representation includes GF Contemporary (Santa Fe) and Todd Bockley Gallery (Minneapolis).  \n\n\n\nHe has produced editions at Tamarind Institute (Albuquerque)\, Highpoint Center for Printmaking (Minneapolis)\, Brandywine Workshop (Philadelphia)\, and the Patton Printmaking Studio at Anderson Ranch Arts Center (Snowmass\,   \n\n\n\nColorado). Morgan has received major fellowships from the Bush Foundation\, Jerome Foundation\, McKnight Foundation\, and the Minnesota State Arts Board\, among others.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn 2025 Morgan was selected as an Invited Visiting Artist at the American Academy in Rome\, a residency that extends his ongoing investigations into abstraction\, phenomenology\, cosmology\, and the embodied experience of mark-making. His parallel writing practice—composed of notes\, essays\, and studio reflections—further articulates the metaphysical and perceptual concerns that inform his visual work.  \n\n\n\nMorgan has held teaching and visiting artist appointments at numerous institutions including Yale University\, Cooper Union\, Cranbrook Academy of Art\, Stanford University\, and the University of Minnesota\, where he served as Department Chair from 2004 to 2010 and is currently Head of Drawing/Painting. He lives and works in Chicago.  \n\n\n\nFree and open to the public. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn addition to public presentations\, artists in the UCLS series have important interactions with UNCG students\, such as holding masterclasses\, talkback sessions\, and seminars\, often just hours before performing on stage. Thanks to a grant from The Cemala Foundation\, some of these artists also work with K-12 students in the Guilford County Schools.

SUMMARY:Jazz Ensembles I and II ∙ 100 Years of John Coltrane
DESCRIPTION:The Miles Davis Jazz Studies Program celebrates jazz legend and High Point native John Coltrane with a semester-long tribute beginning with Jazz Ensembles I and II. Under the direction of Chad Eby and Steve Haines\, these outstanding student artists showcase the legacy of one of the most influential figures in jazz history. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Miles Davis Jazz Studies Program at UNCG is a unique and innovative undergraduate jazz program designed to emulate the traditional process of learning jazz\, through a combination of mentorship\, real-world playing experiences\, and a communal approach to learning. Although the program is housed in one of the largest music schools in the Southeast\, it is kept intentionally small\, resulting in an intensive and highly personalized learning environment. \n\n\n\n UNCG offers the following degree programs for students interested in studying Jazz: \n\n\n\n\nBachelor of Music (B.M.) – Performance\n\n\n\nPost-Baccalaureate Certificate in Jazz Studies\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTicketPriceAdult$18.20Seniors$15.20Students$11.20Ticket prices include a $3.00 processing fee and applicable sales tax.\n\n\n\n\nPurchase Tickets

The Casella Sinfonietta brings faculty and student musicians together to explore that question through three vivid and contrasting works from the early 20th century. \n\n\n\nSilvestre Revueltas’ Homenaje a Federico García Lorca combines rhythmic vitality with an elegiac tribute to the Spanish poet. Paul Hindemith’s Der Schwanendreher draws inspiration from German folk melodies\, transforming them through inventive harmonies and virtuosic writing. Darius Milhaud’s La création du monde reflects the influence of jazz through syncopated rhythms\, colorful instrumentation\, and exuberant energy. \n\n\n\nTogether\, these works reveal modernism not as a single musical style\, but as a meeting place for cultural traditions\, experimentation\, and bold new forms of expression. \n\n\n\nBack to Program \n\n\n\n\nAbout the Soloist\nScott Rawls\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nViolist Scott Rawls has appeared as soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States\, Canada\, Mexico\, Japan\, and Europe.  Recent chamber music endeavors include performances with Dmitry Sitkovetsky\, Branford Marsalis\, Sergey Antonov\, Michelle Cann and the Reynolda Quartet.  With the Nikkanen/Rawls/Bailey string trio\, he has played tours in Alaska\, Washington\, Arizona and Texas.  His solo and chamber music recordings can be heard on the Centaur\, CRI\, Nonesuch\, Capstone\, and Philips labels.   \n\n\n\nA strong proponent of new music\, Rawls has premiered dozens of new works by prominent composers.  Most notable\, he has toured extensively as a member of Steve Reich and Musicians.  As the violist in this ensemble\, he performed the numerous premieres of Daniel Variations\, The Cave and Three Tales by Steve Reich and Beryl Korot\, videographer. SUMMARY:Stoop Stories | Art exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Stoop Stories\n\n\n\nSculpture\, Prints\, and Tales from the Brackish Waters Between Public and Private\, the Sentimental and Forgotten \n\n\n\nExhibition by Patrick Healy & Topher Alexander \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSeptember 15 – 26\, 2026\n\n\n\nReception: Friday\, Sept 25th | 6-8P\n\n\n\nMore About Stoop Stories \n\n\n\nThe brownstone steps\, the wraparound porch\, the bench outside your local deli – these spaces exist on the shoreline separating the sidewalk and the sentimental. The quaint theaters illuminated by streetlamp where first kisses are given and innumerable cups of coffee are consumed. Stoop Stories presents a collection of sculpture\, prints\, and tall tales examining that brackish water between public and private space. An exhibit reflecting on Topher and Patrick’s experiences working and traveling together from creaky southern porches to the marble steps of Venetian cathedrals. \n\n\n\nMore About Patrick and Topher \n\n\n\nPatrick Healy  \n\n\n\nAs a child of working class parents growing up in the suburbs of New York\, I experienced the locality of stoop-side congregation and bodega counter community\, coupled with the far reaching global network of the City and cable television. This micro/macro upbringing compelled me to parse and render these idiosyncratic/ubiquitous situations through my artistic endeavors. Currently working with fabricated steel and other industrial materials\, my sculpture aims to appropriate and subvert the banality of the everyday in order to bring a heightened awareness to its potential for absurdity\, whimsy\, and contemplation. I received my BFA at SUNY Alfred in 2009\, and remained in Upstate New York for nearly a decade\, allowing country living to permeate my city exterior. In 2018\, I made the pilgrimage down to North Carolina to pursue my MFA at UNC Greensboro.  While I can’t shake my accent\, and I’m still hunting for a decent bagel\, I am happy to call the southern stoop\, the porch\, my home. \n\n\n\nLearn more patrickhealystudio.com | IG: @phealyinc \n\n\n\nTopher Alexander \n\n\n\nTopher is a printmaker based in North Carolina. He received his MFA from UNC-Greensboro and currently teaches at the University of North Carolina Greensboro and Cape Fear Community College. His personal artwork ranges the gambit of traditional printmaking\, alternative print methods and experimental paper processes. He has helped coordinate numerous large format steam roller woodcut events across North Carolina as well as smaller workshops around the region as well. His recent work incorporates recycled materials and alternative processes to create work with an environmentally friendly footprint.  \n\n\n\nLearn more IG: @taimpressions
