The concert opens with a world premiere by student composer Chance Gatewood\, highlighting the School of Music’s commitment to fostering new music and the next generation of artistic talent. \n\n\n\nThe program also features flutist Joeli Schilling\, third-prize winner of the School of Music Student Artist Competition\, in a concerto performance that showcases both technical brilliance and expressive artistry. Complementing these student achievements are works by Joel Puckett\, Percy Grainger\, and David Maslanka\, composers whose music spans a wide emotional landscape while demonstrating the richness and versatility of the wind ensemble medium. \n\n\n\nFrom youthful energy and inventive creativity to moments of lyricism\, reflection\, and depth\, this program offers an engaging journey through the many voices of contemporary and twentieth-century wind music. \n\n\n\n\nAbout the Soloist\nJoeli Schilling\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoeli Schilling is a Greensboro-based flutist and music educator pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts in Flute Performance at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro\, where she studies with Dr. Erika Boysen and serves as a Graduate Teaching Assistant. She holds a Master’s degree in Flute Performance from the University of Colorado Boulder. \n\n\n\nJoeli maintains a diverse career as a performer and educator\, with performances\, teaching\, and conference presentations throughout the United States and Europe. She is the first prize winner of the Raleigh Area Flute Association Young Artist Competition\, second prize winner of the Colorado Flute Association Young Artist Competition\, third prize winner of the South Carolina Flute Society Young Artist Competition\, and a winner of the National Flute Association’s 2024 Masterclass Performers Competition. \n\n\n\nAn avid advocate for new music\, Joeli frequently collaborates with emerging composers\, including Austin Perry\, whose flute sonata Sepulchre by the Sea was written for and premiered by Schilling in 2023. She has also premiered Perry’s wind quintet Adipocere at the Texas Music Educators Association and Annika Socolofsky’s quintet 7 Signs You’re Living in a Capitalist Hellscape. \n\n\n\nAs a passionate pedagogue\, Joeli has taught at the Boulder Symphony Music Academy\, maintains an active private studio\, and previously served on the Colorado Flute Association Board. She currently serves as the assistant exhibitor concert and showcase coordinator for the National Flute Association. Joeli has attended festivals including Brevard Music Center\, Texas Summer Flute Symposium\, and the Raffaele Trevisani Flute Course and has performed in masterclasses for artists such as Amy Porter\, Mark Sparks\, Alexa Still\, and Susan Milan. Joeli’s primary teachers include Erika Boysen\, Christina Jennings\, Lisa Garner Santa\, Spencer Hartman\, and Julee Kim Walker. \n\n\n\nBack to Program \n\n\n\n\nAbout the Wind Ensemble\n\n\n\n\nThe UNCG Wind Ensemble is the premier wind band of the UNCG School of Music\, uniting fifty outstanding musicians from across the United States and around the world. Its members—ranging from first‑year undergraduates to master’s and doctoral students in performance and music education—are selected through a highly competitive audition process. Ensemble musicians regularly earn top solo and chamber awards\, competitive scholarships and fellowships\, and professional positions in orchestras\, military bands\, teaching\, and arts leadership. Current students represent seventeen states\, Slovenia\, and Hong Kong. \n\n\n\nFor decades\, the ensemble has built a distinguished record of artistic excellence\, with acclaimed performances at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts\, Lincoln Center\, and leading venues throughout the eastern United States. Its catalog of more than twenty commercial recordings has received national recognition and helped position UNCG as a leader in wind band performance\, commissioning\, and recording. \n\n\n\nThe Wind Ensemble has been featured at major national and regional conferences of the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA)\, National Band Association (NBA)\, American Bandmasters Association (ABA)\, and Music Educators National Conference (MENC). The evening opens with Bizet’s spirited Farandole and features soprano soloists Janinah Burnett and Michaela Kelly in Richard Strauss’s luminous Four Last Songs and Morgen. \n\n\n\nAt the heart of the concert are two unforgettable interpretations of The Nutcracker. The UNCG Symphony Orchestra performs Tchaikovsky’s cherished orchestral suite\, followed by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn’s groundbreaking jazz reimagining. Heard side by side\, these works reveal how the same musical ideas can inspire vastly different sounds\, styles\, and traditions. \n\n\n\nBack to Program \n\n\n\n\nAbout the Soloists\n\n\n\n\nVersatile singer\, actor\, musician\, writer\, arranger\, and educator\, Janinah Burnett has thrilled audiences domestically and internationally in opera\, recital\, musical theatre\, jazz\, television\, and film. Some of her signature operatic roles include Mimí in La bohème\, Lëila in Les Pêcheurs des Perles)\, Donna Anna and Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni\, Micaëla in Carmen\, Marguerite in Faust\, and Violetta in La Traviata. An original cast member of Baz Luhrmann’s La Bohème on Broadway as Mimí\, she won a Los Angeles Theater Alliance Award and performed on the Tony Awards.  Janinah was on the roster of principal artists at the Metropolitan Opera for eight consecutive seasons debuting as Bianca in La Rondine.  \n\n\n\nMore recently Janinah was a member of the closing cast of Phantom of the Opera on Broadway\, making appearances as “Carlotta Giudicelli” since 2016.    \n\n\n\nIn February 2021\, Burnett released her debut album\, Love the Color of Your Butterfly\, which features musical arrangements and collaborations with some of the world’s best jazz musicians. Released on her own record label Clazz Records\, Love the Color of Your Butterfly is an amalgamation of jazz\, opera\, art song\, oratorio\, rhythm and blues\, and spirituals and introduces her concept of “Clazz\,” which encourages collaboration and redefines the parameters of genre while embracing parts of history that are erased\, widely unknown and forgotten. Love the Color of Your Butterfly has been featured in numerous publications including the Financial Times\, Playbill\, Broadway World\, Downbeat Magazine\, and Opera News.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSoprano\, researcher\, and teacher Dr. Michaela Kelly is Assistant Professor of Voice at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Previously\, she taught as lecturer at Scripps College and Chapman University. Michaela was recently awarded a 2026 Faculty Research Grant from UNCG to support her upcoming album release of Windows: Five Songs of Love by Alan Louis Smith with the Navona Record Label. Upcoming engagements for 2026-2027: soprano soloist for the Brahms Requiem with Cumberland Choral Arts\, soprano soloist with Raleigh Camerata\, soloist for Vier Letzte Lieder by Strauss with the UNCG Symphony Orchestra\, soloist with the Piedmont Wind Symphony saxophone ensemble\, as well as recitals in California\, Michigan\, and throughout North Carolina. Michaela will also be the guest clinician for the 2026 Guilford County All County Treble Chorus. \n\n\n\nA flexible and dynamic performer\, Michaela has sung with the Los Angeles Opera Chorus and Los Angeles Master Chorale on their GRAMMY award winning album “Ortiz:Yanga.” She is an avid recitalist and passionate about art songs. Recently\, Michaela performed as a fellow at the Cincinnati Fellowship of the Song and sang a mini-recital highlighting the benefits of cross training at the NATS National Conference. During her first year on faculty at UNCG\, she sang as the soprano soloist with UNCG Chamber Singers in Schubert’s Mirjam’s Siegesgesang\, as part of a vocal trio for UNCG’s annual Collage\, as well as with the UNCG new music ensemble\, Present\, Continuous. Michaela was a recipient of the inaugural American Art Song Prize at SongFest where she performed a recital curated and coached by Libby Larsen\, John Musto and Martha Guth. She has performed as a recitalist at Toronto Summer Music Festival\, the Classical Music Institute\, Source Song Festival and has appeared as a soloist with the UNCG Chamber Singers\, Claremont Concert Orchestra\, Thornton Wind Ensemble\, I Cantori di Carmel\, New England Conservatory Opera\, and NEC Choirs and Orchestra. \n\n\n\nMichaela was a recipient of the 2024 Emerging Leader Award from the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS). Michaela currently serves as Co-Vice President of North Carolina NATS and previously served as Vice President of Programs for NATS – Los Angeles. Her article “The Composition of a Voice Lesson: How a Motor Learning Classification Framework Affects Teacher Effectiveness” was published in the May/June 2025 edition of the Journal of Singing. She has presented her research at the Pan-American Vocology Association Symposium\, Mid-Atlantic Regional NATS Conference\, North Carolina Music Educators Association Conference\, Cal-Western NATS Conference\, and NATS National Conference. This research will culminate in an upcoming online course with Embodied Music Lab titled “The Reflective Studio Music Teacher” which will be released in the spring of 2027.  \n\n\n\nDr. Kelly holds a Bachelor’s of Music Education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro\, a Master’s of Music in Vocal Pedagogy from the New England Conservatory\, and a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance from the University of Southern California. \n\n\n\nBack to Program \n\n\n\n\nUNCG Orchestras\nThe vibrant UNCG Orchestra program has long been recognized for performance excellence\, adventurous programming\, and high artistic standards. A diversity of offerings allow students the opportunity to perform repertoire for ensembles ranging from the largest cornerstone and contemporary works for full orchestra\, to intimate pieces for chamber orchestra\, to string orchestra. \n\n\n\nStudents in the UNCG Orchestra program are dedicated to the performance\, study and cultivation of orchestral music of the highest quality. DESCRIPTION:John Scofield and Electrospective\n\n\n\nThrough his fifty-four-year career\, three-time Grammy Award®-winner John Scofield has occasionally detoured from the traditions of straight-ahead jazz\, exploring a blend of funk and jazz\, which has led to some of his most popular projects. In late autumn of 2026\, Scofield looks back at many of his now classic fusion groove compositions with Electrospective. Not intending to replicate the earlier fan favorites\, he plans instead to revisit them with the seasoned perspective of several decades\, culling tunes from his Blue Matter\, Uberjam\, and AGoGo bands—each responsible for a few recordings—as well as new material in the same vein.  \n\n\n\nScofield looks forward to teaming up with a stellar band of colleagues\, Electrospective will rely on interpretative input from Scofield alum and super funk drummer/producer Adam Deitch (Lettuce)\, multidimensional Larry Goldings (Scary Goldings\, James Taylor) on keyboards\, and legendary bassist Oteil Burbridge (Dead & Co.\, Tedeschi Trucks\, Allman Brothers). SUMMARY:Samara Joy
DESCRIPTION:A native of the Bronx\, Samara Joy became entranced by classic R&B as a child and cut her teeth as a singer in her church’s gospel choir. And while her family history is deeply musical—her grandparents helmed the Philadelphia gospel group the Savettes\, and her father\, the musician and songwriter Antonio McLendon\, has produced\, composed and arranged his own astounding original work—she didn’t delve into the jazz tradition until a college student at SUNY Purchase. During her studies there\, she won the 2019 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition\, which introduced her to the larger jazz scene as a rising star to watch. She was heard\, by audiences and critics alike\, as a masterful interpreter of jazz standards and a rightful heiress of the sound\, technique\, and charisma that defined her jazz heroines—including Vaughan\, Betty Carter\, Abbey Lincoln\, and Carmen McRae.     \n\n\n\nJoy released her self-titled debut on the Whirlwind label in 2021\, followed a year later by Linger Awhile\, her breakout Verve debut\, of which DownBeat wrote\, “With this beautiful recording\, a silky-voiced star is born.” The album earned her a Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album in addition to a headline-making win for Best New Artist. A deluxe edition of the album was released\, as well as the EP A Joyful Holiday\, which took home Grammys for Best Jazz Vocal Album and Best Jazz Performance in 2025. Her new Verve album\, Portrait\, which Joy co-produced with the veteran trumpeter/bandleader and multi-Grammy winner Brian Lynch\, showcases the intimate\, soulful chemistry that she’s developed with her touring band\, already earning her an NAACP Image Award for Best Jazz Album. Paul Dooley’s Fantasy of Colors and Roger Dickerson’s Essay for Band highlight the range and expressive power of contemporary wind music. Shuying Li’s Coping Cadences will feature a sextet of UNCG faculty musicians. \n\n\n\nGabriela Ortiz’s Kauyumari\, arranged by Michael Brignolo\, draws inspiration from the blue deer of Huichol mythology. The concert concludes with John Mackey’s monumental The Frozen Cathedral\, premiered by the UNCG Wind Ensemble in 2012. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Wind Ensemble\n\n\n\n\nThe UNCG Wind Ensemble is the premier wind band of the UNCG School of Music\, uniting fifty outstanding musicians from across the United States and around the world. Its members—ranging from first‑year undergraduates to master’s and doctoral students in performance and music education—are selected through a highly competitive audition process. Ensemble musicians regularly earn top solo and chamber awards\, competitive scholarships and fellowships\, and professional positions in orchestras\, military bands\, teaching\, and arts leadership. Current students represent seventeen states\, Slovenia\, and Hong Kong. \n\n\n\nFor decades\, the ensemble has built a distinguished record of artistic excellence\, with acclaimed performances at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts\, Lincoln Center\, and leading venues throughout the eastern United States. Its catalog of more than twenty commercial recordings has received national recognition and helped position UNCG as a leader in wind band performance\, commissioning\, and recording. \n\n\n\nThe Wind Ensemble has been featured at major national and regional conferences of the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA)\, National Band Association (NBA)\, American Bandmasters Association (ABA)\, and Music Educators National Conference (MENC). The ensemble has also collaborated with prominent composers and performers\, including Pulitzer Prize–winning composer Karel Husa and other influential figures in the field. \n\n\n\nRecent highlights include performances at the Music Center at Strathmore; a joint concert with the United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own”; a twelve‑day international tour through the Czech Republic\, Austria\, and Italy\, culminating in a featured performance at Prague’s renowned Dvořák Hall; and a tour of the Southern United States that concluded with an appearance at the national conference of the College Band Directors National Association. \n\n\n\nBack to Program \n\n\n\n\nUNCG Bands\nThe UNCG Bands are devoted to the performance\, study\, and advancement of wind band music at the highest artistic level. Just days before the US presidential election\, Folds recorded two sold-out performances with the NSO\, which he released as a live album in 2025 that debuted at the top of the Billboard classical and classical crossover charts.  \n\n\n\nA New York Times best-selling author\, Folds has also created new music for film\, television\, and theatre\, including original songs for an ongoing series of animated Peanuts specials on Apple TV.   \n\n\n\nIn 2022 Folds launched a music education charitable initiative in his native state of North Carolina entitled “Keys for Kids\,” which provides funds and keyboards to existing nonprofits that offer free or affordable piano lessons to school-age children from economically disadvantaged households. Recent engagements include appearances with Chicago Symphony Orchestra\, The Cleveland Orchestra\, The Philadelphia Orchestra\, Los Angeles Philharmonic\, National Symphony Orchestra\, and Orquestra Sinfônica Municipal de São Paulo. She is a recipient of the Sphinx Medal of Excellence and the Andrew Wolf Chamber Music Award\, and she served as the inaugural Christel DeHaan Artistic Partner of the American Piano Awards. \n\n\n\nHighlights of Cann’s 2025-26 season include appearances with the Colorado Symphony\, New Jersey Symphony\, Kansas City Symphony\, and Ireland’s National Symphony Orchestra. She also performs the world premiere of a new piano concerto by Valerie Coleman with the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington\, D.C. Her recital appearances include Stanford Live\, Music Toronto\, Chamber Music Detroit\, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum\, Spivey Hall\, and a recital tour in China. \n\n\n\nRecognized as a leading interpreter of the piano music of Florence Price\, Cann performed the New York City premiere of Price’s Piano Concerto in One Movement with The Dream Unfinished Orchestra in July 2016 and the Philadelphia premiere with The Philadelphia Orchestra and Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin in February 2021. Her recording of the concerto with the New York Youth Symphony won a GRAMMY Award in 2023 for Best Orchestral Performance. She won a GRAMMY Award in 2025 for Beyond the Years: Unpublished Songs of Florence Price\, recorded with soprano Karen Slack\, which features 19 unpublished songs composed by Price. Her acclaimed debut solo album Revival\, featuring music by Price and Margaret Bonds\, was released in May 2023 on the Curtis Studio label. She has also recorded two Price piano quintets with the Catalyst Quartet as a part of the quartet’s UNCOVERED series. A champion of emerging talent\, Cann and cellist Tommy Mesa recorded Our Stories\, an album of new works by five living composers of color\, which was released in November 2023. \n\n\n\nA celebrated chamber musician\, Cann has collaborated with leading artists including the Catalyst\, Dover\, and Juilliard string quartets\, Imani Winds\, violinists Timothy and Nikki Chooi\, soprano Karen Slack\, and mezzo-soprano J’Nai Bridges. She regularly performs duo piano repertoire with her sister\, pianist Kimberly Cann\, as the Cann Duo. She has appeared as co-host and collaborative pianist with NPR’s From The Top\, collaborating with actor/conductor Damon Gupton\, violinist Leila Josefowicz\, and violinist and MacArthur Fellow Vijay Gupta. Cann’s numerous media appearances include Performance Today\, PBS Great Performances’ Now Hear This\, and Living the Classical Life. \n\n\n\nEmbracing a dual role as performer and pedagogue\, Cann is frequently invited to teach master classes\, give lecture-demonstrations\, and lead teaching residencies. She has also served on the juries of the Cleveland International Piano Competition\, the Kauffman Music Center International Youth Piano Competition\, and the piano competition of the Music Academy of the West. \n\n\n\nCann holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in piano performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music\, where she studied with Paul Schenly and Dr. Daniel Shapiro\, and an Artist’s Diploma from Curtis Institute of Music\, where she studied with Robert McDonald. She joined the Curtis piano faculty in 2020 as the inaugural Eleanor Sokoloff Chair in Piano Studies. She is also on the piano faculty of the Manhattan School of Music. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDaniel Ericourt Artist Residency in Piano\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Ericourt Residency honors the artistry of the great French pianist Daniel Ericourt (1903-1998)\, who held the position of Artist in Residence at the UNCG School of Music from 1963 through 1976. His legacy as an artist teacher is documented by one of his former students\, Dr. Judy Hutton\, in her 1993 DMA treatise. In 1994\, at the age of ninety\, Ericourt played a memorable all-Debussy recital as the guest artist for the UNCG Focus on Piano Literature symposium.  His recordings of the complete piano music of Debussy were reissued on the Ivory Classics label in 2003 to honor the centenary of his birth. \n\n\n\nThe Ericourt Residency was founded in 2007 through a gift from Mr. Bill Heins\, a friend of Daniel Ericourt and a cousin of Mr. Ericourt’s widow Jayne Winfield Ericourt. Jayne continues to be a beloved presence at many School of Music keyboard events. \n\n\n\nSince its founding in 2007\, the Ericourt Residency has brought these renowned artists to UNCG: José Feghali\, Jon Nakamatsu\, Jacques Després\, Pascal Rogé\, David Owen Norris\, Charles Richard-Hamelin\, Daria Rabotkina\, Craig Sheppard\, Lydia Artymiw\, Sara Davis Buechner\, Inna Faliks\, and Drew Petersen.
