His legacy as an artist teacher is documented by one of his former students\, Dr. Judy Hutton\, in her 1993 DMA treatise. In 1994\, at the age of ninety\, Ericourt played a memorable all-Debussy recital as the guest artist for the UNCG Focus on Piano Literature symposium.  His recordings of the complete piano music of Debussy were reissued on the Ivory Classics label in 2003 to honor the centenary of his birth. \n\n\n\nThe Ericourt Residency was founded in 2007 through a gift from Mr. Bill Heins\, a friend of Daniel Ericourt and a cousin of Mr. Ericourt’s widow Jayne Winfield Ericourt. Jayne continues to be a beloved presence at many School of Music keyboard events. \n\n\n\nSince its founding in 2007\, the Ericourt Residency has brought these renowned artists to UNCG: José Feghali\, Jon Nakamatsu\, Jacques Després\, Pascal Rogé\, David Owen Norris\, Charles Richard-Hamelin\, Daria Rabotkina\, Craig Sheppard\, Lydia Artymiw\, Sara Davis Buechner\, Inna Faliks\, and Drew Petersen. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Details\n\n\n\n\nDownload Program\n\n\n\n\n\nParking\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe importance of philanthropy has never been greater. SUMMARY:Ciompi Quartet
DESCRIPTION:https://youtube.com/live/m48h7rfFV2A?feature=share\n\n\n\n\nPremiere performances of works by Duke and UNCG graduate composers \n\n\n\nFor the sixth year\, the Ciompi has commissioned current Duke graduate composers to write short string quartet movements. This year we will also include works by three graduate composers at the University of North Carolina Greensboro. These premiere performances provide a chance to meet the next generation of composers and experience music on the cutting edge. \n\n\n\nGraduate Student Composers\n\n\n\nErich Barganier – DukeAlly Harvel – UNC GreensboroRonja Mokráňová – DukeClem Pearson – UNC GreensboroJacob Smith – UNC Greensboro \n\n\n\n\nAbout the Artists\n\n\n\n\nSince its founding in 1965 by the renowned Italian violinist Giorgio Ciompi\, the Ciompi Quartet of Duke University has delighted audiences and impressed critics around the world. In a career that spans five continents and includes many hundreds of concerts\, the Ciompi Quartet has developed a reputation for performances of real intelligence and musical sophistication\, with a warm\, unified sound that allows each player’s individual voice to emerge. \n\n\n\nIn recent years\, the Ciompi Quartet has performed across the U.S. from Washington State to California\, Texas\, New York\, Washington DC and New England\, and abroad from China and Taiwan to France\, Italy\, Germany\, Austria\, the Czech Republic\, Serbia and Albania. In June 2024 the Quartet performed in Vienna at a celebration of that composer’s 150th anniversary sponsored by the Arnold Schoenberg Center. The Quartet has performed at the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival in Detroit\, North Carolina’s Eastern Music Festival and Highlands Chamber Music Festival\, and at Monadnock Music in New Hampshire. \n\n\n\nThe Ciompi Quartet’s commitment to creative programming often mixes the old and the brand new in exciting ways. Most recently\, the quartet engaged composers Alan Chan and Andrew Waggoner to write new works for string quartet and pipa\, in a collaboration with pipa player Min Xiao-Fen called “An American in Shanghai: Forgotten Stories.” \n\n\n\nIts extensive catalog of commissions includes many that the group continues to perform on tour. Close ties to composers such as Paul Schoenfield\, Stephen Jaffe\, Scott Lindroth\, and Melinda Wagner have produced important contributions to the repertoire; the quartet recently premiered Stephen Jaffe’s Third String Quartet and two new quintets by Lindroth: “Schley Road” for quartet and saxophone\, and his Cello Quintet. A recording of recent commissions will appear on the New Focus label in 2025. Other recent recordings are on Toccata Classics (a quartet by 19th century violin virtuoso Heinrich Ernst)\, and Naxos\, which released “Journey to the West” by Chiayu Hsu; also on Naxos online is a recording of the quartets of Paul Schoenfield\, including the popular “Tales from Chelm.” Numerous other discs are on the CRI\, Arabesque\, Albany\, Gasparo\, and Sheffield Lab labels. \n\n\n\nAll the Ciompi Quartet members are Professors at Duke\, where they lead the string studios and chamber music program and perform across campus in traditional and non-traditional venues. \n\n\n\n\nCiompi Quartet\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Portfolio Project\nThe Ciompi Quartet Portfolio Project began in the summer of 2020 as a way for the Quartet to engage with composers in Duke Music’s graduate program during the COVID-19 pandemic\, when live performances were curtailed and composers and performers needed creative outlets for their music. Portfolio Project 2020 was presented by Duke Music’s Best of Biddle virtual series\, with the video receiving hundreds of views since its premiere. \n\n\n\nThe success of the initial project inspired the Ciompi Quartet to continue the Portfolio Project in the summers of 2021 and 2022. Read more about the composers and hear recorded performances at the links below. \n\n\n\n\nLearn More About the Portfolio Project\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Details\n\n\n\n\nDownload Program\n\n\n\n\n\nParking\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe importance of philanthropy has never been greater. SUMMARY:Spartan Jazz Collective: The Music of Roy Hargrove
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an unforgettable evening with the Spartan Jazz Collective as they celebrate the music of legendary trumpeter Roy Hargrove! This collaborative faculty-student ensemble highlights the next generation of jazz talent\, with students taking the lead in arranging\, rehearsing\, and performing under the mentorship of the UNCG jazz faculty. \n\n\n\nKnown for his soulful sound and his ability to bridge tradition with modern styles like hip-hop and R&B\, Roy Hargrove’s music continues to inspire—and this performance promises fresh\, vibrant interpretations that honor his legacy. SUMMARY:Coro di Belle Voci and Old Time Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:https://youtube.com/live/c7FjF0-leXQ?feature=share\n\n\n\n\nCoro di Belle VociLindsay Kesselman\, conductor \n\n\n\nOld Time EnsembleChristen Blanton\, director \n\n\n\n\nAbout the Program\n \n\n\n\n\nOld Time Ensemble\nFounded in the spring of 2008\, the UNCG Old Time Ensemble focuses the learning of American vernacular music traditions\, including American old-time string band music\, American folk songs\, jug band music\, work songs\, blues\, gospel\, shape-note singing\, ballads\, and student compositions which reflect these styles. The Old-Time Ensemble has a long tradition of including both music and non-music majors\, and is open to all UNCG students regardless of major and without an audition. The emphasis is on learning and teaching traditional music through traditional means: including “lined-out” singing\, learning by ear\, learning through jamming\, and learning from the wider old-time and traditional music community in North Carolina. The Old-Time Ensemble has worked with local and national tradition bearers\, including Alan Jabbour and Ken Perlmann\, Peter Rowan\, The Carolina Chocolate Drops\, Rhiannon Giddens\, Riley Baugus\, and Richard Hartness and Tolley Tollefson. The group has performed at the North Carolina Folk Festival\, the Charlie Poole Music Festival\, and other local and regional events. Members and Alumi of the UNCG Old-Time Ensemble have gone on to be leaders in the folk and roots music scene\, and in music classrooms across the Southeast. \n\n\n\n\nUNCG Choirs\nThe mission of the UNCG Choirs is dedicated to the teaching\, performance\, study and cultivation of choral music of the highest quality representing not just the western choral canon but also choral music of other cultures by a diverse body of historical and new composers. We believe that the UNCG Choirs are a serious and distinctive medium of musical expression\, of vital service and importance to its members and to UNCG. Through ensemble performance\, we strive to create an environment of trust\, communication\, and expressive freedom\, to present outstanding performances throughout the year\, and to enhance the institutional sprit and character of UNCG. To music as an art and a profession\, the UNCG Choirs seek to bring increasing artistry\, understanding\, and respect by efforts within our own immediate sphere and by providing leadership and sponsorship to school choral programs and through cooperation with all other agencies pursuing similar musical goals. \n\n\n\n\nUNCG Choirs\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Details\n\n\n\n\nDownload Program\n\n\n\n\n\nParking\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe importance of philanthropy has never been greater.
