SUMMARY:Roomful of Teeth
DESCRIPTION:Roomful of Teeth\n\n\n\nRoomful of Teeth is a two-time Grammy®-Award-winning vocal band dedicated to reimagining the expressive potential of the human voice. By engaging collaboratively with artists\, thinkers\, and community leaders from around the world\, the group seeks to uplift and amplify voices old and new while creating and performing meaningful and adventurous music. \n\n\n\nIts latest album\, Rough Magic (New Amsterdam Records\, 2023)\, was captured using groundbreaking recording techniques and innovative spatial technology. Roomful of Teeth was recognized at the 66th GRAMMY awards in 2024\, winning Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance for Rough Magic; and composer William Brittelle’s work Psychedelics\, which appears on Rough Magic\, was nominated for Best Contemporary Classical Composition. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTew Front HallTew Back HallUNCG Students$7.50$7.50UNCG Faculty/Staff$25.00$25.00Adults$50.00$45.00Seniors/Military$40.00$35.00Children (K-12)$25.00$15.00\n\n\n\n\nPURCHASE TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n* Tickets to CVPA and UCLS events are sold exclusively through our box office locations and ETix website\, and nowhere else. Tickets purchased through third-party vendors cannot be honored. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nFounded in 2009 by Brad Wells\, the band was incubated at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA) in North Adams\, Massachusetts\, where members studied with some of the world’s top performers and teachers and commissioned composers who were known for breaking molds. They have learned that the boundaries of the human voice are never what they seem\, that rules can be bent\, and broken\, and perhaps they should be. \n\n\n\nAs the world rapidly changes\, Roomful of Teeth is cultivating deeper relationships with technology\, continuing to expand the capabilities of the human voice\, aiming to be unburdened by physical limitations. They are excited about new collaborative projects that are focused on the stories of place\, home\, and community in the diverse environments our planet has provided. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn addition to public presentations\, artists in the UCLS series have important interactions with UNCG students\, such as holding masterclasses\, talkback sessions\, and seminars\, often just hours before performing on stage. Thanks to a grant from The Cemala Foundation\, some of these artists also work with K-12 students in the Guilford County Schools.

SUMMARY:back home art exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Back Home \n\n\n\nSolo Student Exhibition by Zainab Adamou-Mohamed\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJanuary 28 – February 1\, 2025\n\n\n\n Reception: Friday\, January 31st | 6-8p\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nMore About Back Home \n\n\n\nBack Home is a collection of archival and original photographs taken by my parents and I during trips to the West African countries of Niger and Nigeria in 2008\, 2022\, and 2024. This exhibition is an exploration of the concept of home and memory through the lens of those returning and visiting home. \n\n\n\nI was born in the US to parents who immigrated from Niger in the early 2000s. My extended family resides in Niger\, including the cities of Niamey and Zinder. The majority of my father’s family resides in the northern Nigerian city of Kano. \n\n\n\nAs I look back on these photos\, questions surrounding the concept of memory and home frequently arise. \n\n\n\nWhat does it mean to remember a place as someone who grew up there versus someone who didn’t? What is the relationship between the people in these photos as they exist today and who they were in the moment the image was made? How do the images we choose to capture influence the memories we keep? \n\n\n\nThe curation and arrangement of these street scenes\, family gatherings\, and intimate portraits are a means of exploring those questions. Through my personal story of my family’s journey back home\, I invite viewers to examine their own definitions of memory\, family\, and homecoming. \n\n\n\nMore About Zainab Adamou-Mohamed \n\n\n\nZainab Adamou-Mohamed was born in 2003 in Greensboro\, North Carolina. She is currently pursuing her BA in Studio Art at the University of North Carolina Greensboro. She has previously been included in Crystallization: An Exhibition of Student Ceramics and Sculpture (2023) at the Greensboro Project Space and the 125.2 volume of The Coraddi Art & Literary Magazine (2023). Her creative work explores the areas of culture\, belonging\, disconnect\, and the immigrant experience. \n\n\n\n@photo.by.zam\, @art.by.zam \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nGreensboro Project Space Weekly Open Hours: \n\n\n\nTuesday-Friday\, 12:00-5:00pm \n\n\n\nSaturday\, 2:00-5:00pm

SUMMARY:The UNinformed states of america art exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The Uninformed States of America\n\n\n\nSolo Exhibition by Matthew Troyer\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJanuary 28 – February 1\, 2025\n\n\n\n Reception: Friday\, January 31st | 6-8p\n\n\n\nMore About The Uninformed States of America   \n\n\n\nThe Uniformed States of America explores the commodification of military surplus garments\, examining how items once used in warfare have become symbols within American consumer culture. These garments\, designed initially for survival on the battlefield\, now carry new meanings as they are bought\, sold\, and worn in everyday life. They reflect a complex narrative of national identity\, nostalgia\, and militarization that continues to shape American society. \n\n\n\nThrough documenting military surplus stores\, I capture more than just the physical items\, I explore how these spaces reflect cultural tensions. For some\, these garments represent patriotism\, solidarity\, or a connection to an idealized past. For others\, they raise questions about the militarization of civilian life and the systems of power they symbolize. The presence of military and police memorabilia in these stores can evoke a sense of pride for some. In contrast\, for others\, it stirs discomfort and raises critical questions about authority and power. \n\n\n\nThe Uniformed States of America invites viewers to question the more profound cultural and ideological implications of wearing and consuming military surplus. These items\, now symbols of both reverence and critique\, challenge us to reflect on the evolving relationship between consumerism\, militarization\, and American identity. \n\n\n\nMore About Matthew Troyer  \n\n\n\nMatthew Troyer (b. 1988) is an American artist\, educator\, and former U.S. Marine Corps Combat Photographer. Specializing in documentary photography\, Troyer critically examines the lasting impact of war on individuals\, communities\, and culture. Drawing on his experiences as a veteran\, his work explores the intersections of war\, memory\, identity\, and consumer culture\, using a multifaceted approach to explore narratives that shape America’s understanding of conflict and its legacy. \n\n\n\nTroyer received his BFA\, with honors\, in Photography and Imaging from Ringling College of Art and Design in 2022 and an MFA in Studio Art from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2024. He is currently a Part-Time Lecturer at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. \n\n\n\nwww.troyermatthew.com \n\n\n\n@matthewtroyer \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nGreensboro Project Space Weekly Gallery Hours: \n\n\n\nTuesday – Friday\, 12 -5 PM \n\n\n\nSaturday\, 2-5PM

SUMMARY:Moving Through Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Moving Through \n\n\n\nSolo Exhibition by Madalyn Loucks Sorrell\n\n\n\nFeaturing a Short Film by Cade Hogan and Loucks Sorrell\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJanuary 21 – 25\, 2025\n\n\n\n Reception: Friday\, January 24th | 6-8p\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore About Moving Through \n\n\n\nMoving Through is a collection of work that explores moments of bodily\, social and economic displacement. Sorrell aims to investigate these themes in every possible facet by “moving through” multiple mediums such as painting\, metal sculpture and film.  \n\n\n\nMadalyn Loucks Sorrell and Cade Hogan\, Moving Through\, 2024\, 4 and ½ minutes  \n\n\n\nMoving Through is a collaborative documentary by Madalyn Loucks Sorrell and Cade Hogan. The film centers around exploring moments of bodily\, social and economic displacement. In the interviews\, three women describe moments in their lives where their bodies became barriers to their autonomy and how they’ve navigated these experiences. Their testimonials\, filmed within the quiet intimacy of their homes\, highlight how multifaceted people can be\, and how what’s on the surface isn’t always as it appears. \n\n\n\nMore About Madalyn Loucks Sorrell \n\n\n\nIn my practice\, I have been investigating bodily memory to reckon with personal identity and chronic illness. My work serves as an attempt to explore and challenge the displacement I feel in my own body. This displacement stems from experiences throughout my life where the body became a barrier between me and the ability to make decisions for myself. My work aims to reclaim autonomy through representations of these experiences. When I work with metal\, the material demands a type of labor that feels ritualistic. It is a transaction between my body and the material. The heating and smashing of metal are metamorphic\, not unlike how the body transforms during trauma. Metal\, when under heat and pressure\, becomes new. A new vessel for memory. Here\, the broken thing becomes a testament to the resilience of the body rather than something invaluable. Changed and reassembled by my hands\, this labor makes me the catalyst for these observable metamorphoses. \n\n\n\nFollow Loucks on IG: @mlsorrellart \n\n\n\nMore About Cade Hogan \n\n\n\nCade Hogan is a US writer/director/actor who is currently based in Raleigh North Carolina. He attended the University of North Carolina School of the Arts Summer Film Program where he was able to start making movies on a bigger scale. From there\, Cade began his journey on creating his independent short films and his first feature A Likely Story. His filmography includes the audience renowned parody film Thursday the 12th and was followed by many shorts focused on comedy including: The Average Inspection of the General Parade Float\, Wrong Address\, Immortality\, and Meeting Mary. Their dream from the beginning was to create a book emblematic of Der Krieg Dem Krieg (War Against War! by Ernst Friedrich\, a German pacifist who attempted to rally people against war but showing its atrocities (noteworthy is the 100th anniversary of its publication is in 2024\,) and Francisco Goya’s Disasters of War\, etchings and related text which condemn the cyclical nature of humankind’s inhumanity to one another. Johnson and Stephan hope to keep the urgency of these timeless\, cyclical conversations present\, while adding the consequences of climate change to the list of atrocities. \n\n\n\nMore About the Artists \n\n\n\nJulia Johnson\, a native of New Orleans\, earned a BA from Hollins College and an MFA in Creative Writing from The University of Virginia\, where she was a Henry Hoyns Fellow. Johnson is the author of Naming the Afternoon\, published by Louisiana State University Press\, The Falling Horse\, published by Factory Hollow Press\, and most recently\, Subsidence. Her poems have appeared in The Cincinnati Review\, Poetry International\, Sentence: A Journal of Prose Poetics\, jubilat\, Tin House\, Conduit\, and numerous other journals and anthologies. She is Professor of English and Creative Writing at the University of Kentucky. \n\n\n\nwww.english.as.uky.edu/users/jmjo235\, @juliamaejohnso_ \n\n\n\nMariam Aziza Stephan is a first-generation Afghan-German American. DESCRIPTION:Lindsay Kesselman\, sopranoKimberly Cole\, clarinetMidori Koga\, piano \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDownload Program\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe importance of philanthropy has never been greater. Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n\n\n\nJoin Our Email List\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nhttps://www.youtube.com/live/rWS6VUPplCE?si=mQPelvREzut7tXkS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEstablished solo artists soprano Lindsay Kesselman\, clarinetist Kimberly Cole Luevano\, and pianist Midori Koga joined as the Haven Trio in 2011 around performances of Abbie Betinis’ hauntingly beautiful song cycle Nattsanger. Haven released its first album\, Bright Angel\, (Fleur de Son\, Ltd.) in 2013 to critical acclaim: “…amazingly performed works…performances are exquisite as is their ensemble chemistry.” (Sequenza 21)   \n\n\n\nNow in its 13th season\, Haven has commissioned a compelling body of repertoire from its extended family of composers. Their recordings: would that loving were enough (Blue Griffin\, 2024)\, all we are given we cannot hold (Blue Griffin\, 2023)\, Twinge (Blue Griffin\, 2019)\, Atonement (Fleur de Son\, 2015)\, and Bright Angel (Fleur de Son\, 2013) can be found on all streaming platforms. Haven believes in commissioning people\, not pieces of music\, and enjoys ongoing relationships with composers such as Abbie Betinis\, David Biedenbender\, Evan Chambers\, Roshanne Etezady\, Lee Kesselman\, Amy Beth Kirsten\, Gilda Lyons\, Kieren MacMillan\, Jon Magnussen and Ivette Herryman Rodriguez.   \n\n\n\nHaven feels fortunate to have received support from numerous granting organizations in support of new music and is the recipient of a Barlow Endowment Commissioning Grant (2021)\, Chamber Music America Classical Commissioning Grant (2021 and 2015)\, Ontario Arts Council Grant (2016) and others.   \n\n\n\nRecent and upcoming performances include: premieres of all we are given we cannot hold by David Biedenbender and poet Robert Fanning\, DE OTRO MUNDO by Ivette Herryman Rodriguez\, Hardwired for Optimism by Roshanne Etezady and poet Carolyn Petit Pinet\, as well as premieres of new arrangements of David Biedenbender’s Shell and Wing and Amy Beth Kirsten’s to my own heart). They were featured in performances at the Chamber Music America conference in New York in 2024\, with Chamber Music International and the Fine Arts Chamber Players in Dallas\, TX\, and also in a residency with the Jackman Humanities Institute at the University of Toronto.   \n\n\n\nKim\, Lindsay and Midori are all passionate teachers and actively seek out opportunities to work with student performers and composers. Haven has recently engaged in performing/teaching residencies at Michigan State University\, the Hartt School\, University of Texas – San Antonio\, Sam Houston State University\, Emory and Henry University\, Abilene Christian University\, St. Mary of the Woods College\,College of DuPage and as an Ensemble-in-Residence at the Connecticut Summerfest in June 2022 and 2024.  \n\n\n\nWhether in a living room\, an art gallery\, a school\, or a concert hall\, Haven harnesses the power of vulnerability…inviting its audiences into an intimate and personal experience of contemporary music. Through their composers\, they aim to create artistic experiences which allow audiences to feel welcomed\, included\, and connected to one another through poetry and musical storytelling. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHaven Trio\n\n\n\n\n
