SUMMARY:Courtney Miller\, oboe • Artist Faculty Recital
DESCRIPTION:DOWNLOAD PROGRAM\n  \n \n\nThe importance of philanthropy has never been greater. Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\nOboist Courtney Miller is recognized for her exquisite playing and innovative performances. Fanfare magazine hails her as “a performer of considerable skill\, with an unfailingly lovely sound\, abundant technical ability\, and a special gift for turning notes into poetry.” She has performed recital tours throughout the United States\, Europe\, Asia\, and South America. \nDr. Courtney Miller’s 2019 album\, Portuguese Perspectives\, spotlights world premiere recordings by Portuguese composers\, including several new commissions by Miller. This album and her 2015 release\, Modern Fairy Tales\, are available on all streaming platforms. American Record Guide praises her “seamless consistency in the various registers of the oboe…and sensitive phrasing and articulation.” This summer in Thailand\, she will perform works from her newest album\, Hans Gál: Works for Viola\, Piano\, Violin\, and Oboe. \nAn experienced orchestral musician\, Miller also performs frequently with orchestras throughout the United States\, most recently with the Chicago Symphony and Orchestra Iowa. In addition\, she has a flair for interdisciplinary work. She has collaborated with hip-hop dancer Ernest Phillips\, belly dancer Janelle Issis\, and choreographer Kristin Marrs. Perhaps her most daring collaboration yet is Psionic\, a work that explores interactive movement data between oboist and computer through a live stream of EEG data. \nBefore joining the UNCG faculty\, Dr. Miller was Associate Professor of Oboe at the University of Iowa. She previously served on the faculties of Boston College and Ashland University. \nDr. Courtney Miller received a DMA from Boston University with John Ferrillo\, a MM from Cleveland Institute of Music with John Mack\, and a BM from Florida State University with Eric Ohlsson.

SUMMARY:Walter Aparicio\, piano • Guest Artist Recital
DESCRIPTION:DOWNLOAD PROGRAM\n  \n \n\nThe importance of philanthropy has never been greater. Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\nKnown for the warmth and conviction of his performances\, pianist Walter Aparicio explores issues of cultural background and identity through his concerts and workshops. Much of his programming includes music that directly references elements of dance\, language and folk traditions. \n\n\nWalter’s notable New York credits include alternative spaces such as the Cell Theatre\, Firehouse Space\, and Soapbox Gallery as well as more traditional venues like Steinway Hall\, Carnegie Hall & Symphony Space. Outside of the US\, he has presented performances at the International Academy of Music in St. Petersburg (Russia)\, the Beijing International Music Festival & Academy (China)\, and Barcelona Piano Academy (Spain) and in his native Bolivia for the Festival Internacional de la Interculturalidad. \nAn adventurous artist\, Walter has participated in performance installations such as Allora & Calzadilla’s Stop\, Repair\, Prepare: Variations on Ode to Joy for a Prepared Piano. Taking place at the Gladstone Gallery\, NY\, the work involved the pianist performing backwards – from a hole cut inside a grand piano – while moving the instrument around the gallery space. The work transforms the player/instrument dynamic\, and this experience has been part of Mr. Aparicio’s ongoing inquiry into the nature of performance and the artist-audience relationship. Other ventures have included collaborations with the Nouveau Classical Project (where fashion meets music) and Notes on Fiction\, a series where musical references in literature are presented as a fluid reading/concert hybrid. \n\n\n\n\nAn active proponent of music by Latin American composers\, Walter is committed to introducing rarely heard works to new audiences. His debut album\, Aires Indios: Piano Music of Bolivia (MSR Classics) features music by Eduardo Caba\, Simeón Roncal and Marvin Sandi. These evocative works that draw from Andean folk music are then infused with the stylized vocal quality of Chopin and the barbarism of Bartók. Mr. Aparicio is on the artist roster of Cayambis Music Press\, a leading publisher of works by Latin American composers. As a Cayambis artist\, Walter champions and records recent works of the publisher’s composers. \nWalter serves on the Executive Board of the Piano Teachers Congress of NY where he co-chairs the 20th/21st-Century Piano Festival. Currently\, he is faculty at Piano Works in Progress (NY & Vermont)\, Manhattan School of Music -Precollege Division and maintains a thriving private studio in Manhattan. He is staff accompanist at the Chapin School & Bank Street\, School for Children. \nWalter holds degrees from NYU Steinhardt and Manhattan School of Music. His primary teachers have included Deirdre O’Donohue\, Phillip Kawin and Robert Durso.

SUMMARY:Lunar New Year Celebration Concert
DESCRIPTION:DOWNLOAD PROGRAM\n \n\nThe importance of philanthropy has never been greater. Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis performance is presented with support from a UNCG iBelong Grant. \nThe UNCG iBelong project launched in 2019 with a campus survey intended to find out how the university can better promote a climate where everyone feels supported and welcomed. Performers include undergraduates through masters and doctoral candidates in music performance and music education. Membership in the organization is highly competitive\, and all students are placed by audition. Members of the Symphony have achieved numerous individual honors including solo competition awards on regional and national levels\, music scholarships\, undergraduate teaching fellowships\, graduate assistantships and fellowships\, and membership in honors ensembles. \nThe UNCG Symphony Orchestra periodically tours the state and region\, and has performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington\, DC. A recent review in the Classical Voice of North Carolina described the Orchestra’s performance as\, “dramatic and incisive\,” and “beautifully done.” \nIn addition to the performances of standard orchestral literature\, the Symphony Orchestra collaborates annually with the UNCG choirs to present a major choral/orchestral work. Faculty\, as well as winners of the annual Student Artist Competition\, are often featured as soloists. The Symphony combines with the School of Music Opera Theatre and the UNCG School of Theatre to perform a fully staged opera production each spring semester. String performers who are not majoring in music are especially encouraged to participate. \n\nThe vibrant UNCG Orchestra program has long been recognized for performance excellence\, adventurous programming\, and high artistic standards. A diversity of offerings allow students the opportunity to perform repertoire for ensembles ranging from the largest cornerstone and contemporary works for full orchestra\, to intimate pieces for chamber orchestra\, to string orchestra. \nStudents in the UNCG Orchestra program are dedicated to the performance\, study and cultivation of orchestral music of the highest quality. The UNCG Orchestras offer outstanding performances throughout the year and enhance the institutional spirit and community of UNCG. We seek to promote music education in the state of North Carolina and in our region by supporting secondary school orchestra programs and other organizations through our outreach activities and other annual events on campus.

SUMMARY:Andrew Willis\, harpsichord and piano • Artist Faculty Recital
DESCRIPTION:DOWNLOAD PROGRAM\n  \n \n\nThe importance of philanthropy has never been greater. Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\nPianist Andrew Willis explores the historical development of keyboard instruments and their performance practice\, maintaining a commitment to the study\, performance\, and teaching of the widest possible range of repertoire. Keenly interested in the history of the piano\, he contributes frequently to conferences\, festivals\, and concert series. He is a past president of the Southeastern Historical Keyboard Society and a Trustee of the Westfield Center for Historical Keyboard Studies\, for whose International Fortepiano Competition he served as a juror. \nAs Covington Distinguished Professor of Music in the UNC Greensboro School of Music\, Willis teaches performance on instruments ranging from harpsichord to modern piano. He directed the biennial UNCG Focus on Piano Literature for over a decade and recently inaugurated a student Historical Performance Consort. For the Albany\, Bridge\, Claves\, Centaur\, and CRI labels he has recorded solo and ensemble music of three centuries on pianos linked historically to the chosen repertoire. His recording of Op. 106 for the first complete Beethoven sonata cycle on period instruments was hailed by The New York Times as “a ‘Hammerklavier’ of rare stature.” \nWillis received the D.M.A. in Historical Performance from Cornell University\, where he studied fortepiano with Malcolm Bilson\, the M.M. in Accompanying and Chamber Music from Temple University under George Sementovsky and Lambert Orkis\, and the B.M. in Piano from The Curtis Institute of Music\, where his mentor was Mieczyslaw Horszowski.

Through her signature project Gather Hear Tour\, Miki is traveling the country state-by-state with a piano in a van to perform in community gathering spaces instead of concert halls. The mission is to connect with Americans across socioeconomic and political boundaries in this deeply divided country through music. Miki has given more than 70 free concerts in Alaska\, West Virginia\, Massachusetts\, Utah\, and Louisiana\, and has directed films about her tours which have screened at film festivals. When not trucking around with her own piano\, Miki enjoys a career of solo and chamber music\, with a special affinity for contemporary music. Miki has been featured at venues and occasions such as: Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall\, Helsinki Music Centre\, The Arctic Philharmonic (Norway)\, the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, Joe’s Pub at the Public Theater (NYC)\, \nRoulette (Brooklyn)\, MATA Festival (NYC)\, Toronto Summer Music Festival\, and Music on Main (Vancouver). In 2022\, she made her soloist debut with the North Mississippi Symphony Orchestra and Portland Columbia Symphony Orchestra. In the summers\, she is a faculty member of Heifetz Institute in Virginia. \nMiki holds degrees from Yale School of Music\, Eastman School of Music\, and Northwestern University. She is an ultramarathon runner and finished her first 100-mile race this summer in the Oregon Cascades.
