SUMMARY:Walter Aparicio\, piano • Guest Artist Recital
DESCRIPTION:DOWNLOAD PROGRAM\n  \n \n\nThe importance of philanthropy has never been greater. Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\nKnown for the warmth and conviction of his performances\, pianist Walter Aparicio explores issues of cultural background and identity through his concerts and workshops. Much of his programming includes music that directly references elements of dance\, language and folk traditions. \n\n\nWalter’s notable New York credits include alternative spaces such as the Cell Theatre\, Firehouse Space\, and Soapbox Gallery as well as more traditional venues like Steinway Hall\, Carnegie Hall & Symphony Space. Outside of the US\, he has presented performances at the International Academy of Music in St. Petersburg (Russia)\, the Beijing International Music Festival & Academy (China)\, and Barcelona Piano Academy (Spain) and in his native Bolivia for the Festival Internacional de la Interculturalidad. \nAn adventurous artist\, Walter has participated in performance installations such as Allora & Calzadilla’s Stop\, Repair\, Prepare: Variations on Ode to Joy for a Prepared Piano. Taking place at the Gladstone Gallery\, NY\, the work involved the pianist performing backwards – from a hole cut inside a grand piano – while moving the instrument around the gallery space. The work transforms the player/instrument dynamic\, and this experience has been part of Mr. Aparicio’s ongoing inquiry into the nature of performance and the artist-audience relationship. Other ventures have included collaborations with the Nouveau Classical Project (where fashion meets music) and Notes on Fiction\, a series where musical references in literature are presented as a fluid reading/concert hybrid. \n\n\n\n\nAn active proponent of music by Latin American composers\, Walter is committed to introducing rarely heard works to new audiences. His debut album\, Aires Indios: Piano Music of Bolivia (MSR Classics) features music by Eduardo Caba\, Simeón Roncal and Marvin Sandi. These evocative works that draw from Andean folk music are then infused with the stylized vocal quality of Chopin and the barbarism of Bartók. Mr. Aparicio is on the artist roster of Cayambis Music Press\, a leading publisher of works by Latin American composers. As a Cayambis artist\, Walter champions and records recent works of the publisher’s composers. \nWalter serves on the Executive Board of the Piano Teachers Congress of NY where he co-chairs the 20th/21st-Century Piano Festival. Currently\, he is faculty at Piano Works in Progress (NY & Vermont)\, Manhattan School of Music -Precollege Division and maintains a thriving private studio in Manhattan. He is staff accompanist at the Chapin School & Bank Street\, School for Children. \nWalter holds degrees from NYU Steinhardt and Manhattan School of Music. His primary teachers have included Deirdre O’Donohue\, Phillip Kawin and Robert Durso.

Performers include undergraduates through masters and doctoral candidates in music performance and music education. Membership in the organization is highly competitive\, and all students are placed by audition. Members of the Symphony have achieved numerous individual honors including solo competition awards on regional and national levels\, music scholarships\, undergraduate teaching fellowships\, graduate assistantships and fellowships\, and membership in honors ensembles. \nThe UNCG Symphony Orchestra periodically tours the state and region\, and has performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington\, DC. A recent review in the Classical Voice of North Carolina described the Orchestra’s performance as\, “dramatic and incisive\,” and “beautifully done.” \nIn addition to the performances of standard orchestral literature\, the Symphony Orchestra collaborates annually with the UNCG choirs to present a major choral/orchestral work. Faculty\, as well as winners of the annual Student Artist Competition\, are often featured as soloists. The Symphony combines with the School of Music Opera Theatre and the UNCG School of Theatre to perform a fully staged opera production each spring semester. String performers who are not majoring in music are especially encouraged to participate. \n\nThe vibrant UNCG Orchestra program has long been recognized for performance excellence\, adventurous programming\, and high artistic standards. A diversity of offerings allow students the opportunity to perform repertoire for ensembles ranging from the largest cornerstone and contemporary works for full orchestra\, to intimate pieces for chamber orchestra\, to string orchestra. \nStudents in the UNCG Orchestra program are dedicated to the performance\, study and cultivation of orchestral music of the highest quality. The UNCG Orchestras offer outstanding performances throughout the year and enhance the institutional spirit and community of UNCG. We seek to promote music education in the state of North Carolina and in our region by supporting secondary school orchestra programs and other organizations through our outreach activities and other annual events on campus.
